Polygamous sect picks tiny, secluded Colorado town for grandmas' refuge
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 8/6/08 | Brooke Adams

The last thing they wanted was to be the talk of the town.

Lured by its scenic beauty and live-and-let-live reputation, a controversial polygamous sect decided Westcliffe, population 456, offered perfect seclusion for grandmothers in their last years.

But after Lee Steed bought an abandoned home in the Bull Domingo Ranch subdivision, the chatter started: Who were the newcomers, why had they come, what were their plans?

There are 21 people living in the house - 12 children from 4 different mothers, eight unrelated women, and one man. When does a “home” become a “compound”?

David Duke claims he's a Republican. Using your 'logic' here, does that mean that the GOP is the party of the KKK?

Oh, and BTW, I think the entire FLDS leadership should be pursued as vigorously as the law allows for their role in brainwashing and raping young girls.

I don't like either McLame or Mutt because they are both liberal flip-flopping opportunistic politicians.

I will vote against Barry in a few weeks. I will not vote for Juan.

When does a “home” become a “compound”?

When it exercises it's rights under the second amendment.

Did I say anything that was not correct?

It's what you didn't say. As Orwell once said, omission is the most powerful form of lie. You can't be bothered to post that the LDS disavowed both polygamy and the FLDS a long time ago.

At the least, it’s a commune. Which is not so bad.

I think of a compound as a group of residences set off from the surrounding area by a fence. That’s not bad, either.

However, if the fence is there to protect what would be considered illegal outside the fence, then it becomes bad.

Republicans were founded by Northerners wanting to abolish slavery (and LDS polygammy, btw). These were the anti-racists of their day. Duke is a racist; his ideas bear nothing in common with historical Republicanism.

The FLDS have MORE in common with the LDS of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young than the current LDS/Mormons of today.

I guess no church can be allowed to evolve beyond its past. The Catholics should just go back to burning heretics.

The Mormon-bashing on FR gets quite tiresome - and I don't have a dog in this hunt either way.

Formally disavowed polygamy yes. But the mainline LDS / Mormon “prophet” UP UNTIL 1947 was an admitted (and lawfully convicted) polygamist.

I’d be willing to bet y’all would revert back to it, if the law was changed too.

Catholics haven’t burned anyone in like 350 years. When did the last mainline Mormon polygamist die?

Separate but equal was the law of this land until 1953.

Take it to the religion forum. I'm tired of seeing this non-stop Mormon bashing in news.

My wife is Catholic and she'd geld me if I even considered polygamy.

And I'm SICK of the Mormon bashing. Your cohorts are toxic to the good Mormon conservatives that post here.

There are many many things far more harmful to our culture than mormons. Are you seriously concerned of whether they would revert back to it over all the other things going on?

This is a News thread. I’m sure you can find an open Mormon thread in the Religion forum where you can make your points. But they are not welcome on the News forum.

That’s a lot of people in one house. On the other hand, there are a lot of people in my house. I assume most of these elderly ladies and children don’t own cars, so parking violations shouldn’t be an issue.

If the house is up to code and the residents are following local law regarding parking, animals, trash disposal, etc., you’d think the neighbors would prefer this group’s residence to having an abandoned house on the street. I know I would.

(Sheriff) Jobe met with Steed and FLDS spokesman Willie Jessop, who assured him such fears are unfounded.
“Not one person in our group in Colorado is on welfare, not one,” said Steed, and property taxes are fully paid on the home, which he estimates is now worth up to $800,000.
Jobe said he didn’t believe everything he heard and worries because portraits of Jeffs are all over the FLDS house.

I’d be suspicious of anything “enforcer” Willie Jessop was connected too...

And the portraits of Warren Jeffs ???????

In the article it states:

As word spread, real estate agent Mattie Burtt complained to the county's zoning office about the FLDS, writing that "we all need to consider the effect on our property values."

She asked inspectors to check out the home and consider code changes to block "compounds." A July inspection found only minor violations and no criminal activity.

I was wondering what a municipality or building department would consider a compound.

They might not be collecting welfare in Colorado but they still could be registered for benefits in Short Creek. Surely, the older women are receiving social security but enough to support 21 people?

I was wondering how the realtor’s neighbors felt about her complaint to the inspectors. I don’t think I’d like it much, even knowing about what went on in El Dorado.

Yes. We all have pretty much agreed that it is pointless, and unproductive, to bash religions, Mormons,LDS, or even FLDS, on these threads.

(although I was confused because one of you referred to LDS and the other FLDS, but many here will tell you I’m only about 3 years old)

If you want to bash something, bash Warren Jeffs and his loyal inner circle for practicing, and enforcing the practice, of sex with minors, and using the FLDS as a shield to do so.

Without Warren’s insistence that he only selects the ‘brides’ and ‘grooms’, and he takes all the money, and he can take wives, children, property away from any men who don’t play his game, most of us would never have heard of the FLDS.

Significant to the “compound” label is the fact that the different residential and other buildings inside the YFZ Ranch do not receive mail directly — everything goes to one box at the main gate, per the leaders’ instructions to the USPS.

Three other women, ages 65 to 83 and widows of previous sect leaders, live there, too . . .

It's such a shame that these three elderly women, instead of living with family members, have been farmed out. Out of sight . . . out of mind.

My mother, bless her soul, lived with me until she died last year at the age of 93½.

One thing that struck me odd was the absence of older people living at the ranch. There were 450+ minor children, 150 or so young to middle age adults and maybe 3 or 4 older people. What do they do with their senior citizens?

I wonder how many of her minor daughters the grandmother gave away at the whim of her husband, a former sect leader . . . how many of her sons did she discard on the side of the road before she had a stroke?
