Too bad I've been doing yard work between coffee & Internet breaks or I could give a more conscious response.

I've read a number of papers claiming Persia's desire to align with Europe. Perhaps it's a he said/she said thing. Maybe since the Mideast is so tribal and communications were limited back then and trust wasn't exactly a Persian trait, one will find that no two stories are the same.

I am old enough to recall being told that John Kennedy was brilliant, a speed reader, who could read and in fact did read books at an amazing pace. It was all bullshit.

We were all told that David Eisenhower, the man who managed D. Day and the Crusade in Europe which defeated the Third Reich, was a blithering moron. Adlai Stevenson, on the other hand, was brilliant.

Dan Quayle was stupid because he spelled potato the English way-in fact he had it right until he was mis-corrected -but Al Gore who flunked out of two universities and thinks that leopards have stripes, is counted an intellectual who can predict the fate of our spinning planet.

We were all told that George Bush is stupid and that John Kerry was brilliant but the transcripts of their grades in university prove the opposite.

Interestingly, they did not call Dick Nixon stupid, they called him evil.

Now we are told Barak Obama has an IQ as high as 170. This number is in the stratosphere. It is so high that it is difficult to credit although it is plausible. Obama does have a degree from Harvard with a "summa" attached to it, no mean achievement. But we must not discount the possibility that these achievements were greased by affirmative action. We just do not know.

I think it is interesting to speculate about why liberals feel the need to inflate the intelligence of their candidates. My thesis is that since they are virtually all atheists who need to play God, their orientation is all this worldly and they don't want anyone playing God who is not omniscient and intelligent. But that is a whole new series of posts.

“But even if they can somehow gets the money and the horses to mount a ground campaign, does he have the issue to energize the ground troops?”

I don’t know, but “I’m not Obama” won’t be enough. Kerry ran on not being Bush in 2004. Not sucking as much as the other guy has never been a winning campaign strategy.

I read an interesting stat a few days ago on one of the polling websites. I can’t remember exactly where or I’d post it. Anyway, only about 30% of McCain voters are telling pollsters they will definitely vote for McCain, while over 60% of Obama voters are saying they will definitely vote for Obama. When 70% of the people currently saying they’ll vote for you might decide to switch to the other guy or to a third party or not show up at all, that’s a problem.

I think if there’s any issue that could galvanize voters to put McCain over the top it would be energy, and I think that accounts entirely for the tightening of the polls in recent days. But Pres. Bush didn’t do McCain any favors when he refused to call Congress back into session.

I think the other issue lurking out there is infidelity. Freepers can poo poo it all they wish, but if the Dems can paint McCain with that label and depress the evangelical vote, it’s all over. Liberals will vote for moral perfidy, but Christian conservatives won’t. Already I notice on Yahoo news today an article linking McCain to Edwards, asking the seemingly innocuous question “Will Edwards’ affair hurt Obama or McCain more?” Freepers who think that a decades-old indiscretion won’t hurt McCain have forgotten Bush’s DUI October Surprise in 2000, which was also 30 years old, but was enough to keep the evangelical vote home. Before then, Bush was riding high in the polls and looked like an easy win.

McCain isn’t going to beat Obama. Obama (with God’s help) is going to defeat Obama. Our nation is a nation of miracles from the very beginning. Our part of the Revolutionary War, for example, was mainly retreat from the most powerful military in the world. Yet we won. God rules in the affairs of man and is certainly involved in the outcome here.

Sorry, if it looks like I am throwing all my references, books and sources on you. Just understand that I want to set the record straight as this issue is becoming of importance for current affairs.

So I'll keep it short. ;o)

Perhaps it's a he said/she said thing.

Yes to some extent this is indeed the case. A lot of older books were slanted and biased to on or the other side. However the documents of all sides, the memories and communication (which were good as all sides had embassies and a lot of memories and letters exist). Iran was already a very modernized country with all components of modern communication (radio, cinema, telegraph and telephone).

But you are correct. It takes a lot of time to look through what all sides said. That's why there is a use for freaks like me. ;o)

After reading close to 100 books on Reza Shah, I can however assure that Edwin Black is a liar, and is harming the good cause(the fight against Ahmadinejad) by his lies .

Maybe since the Mideast is so tribal

Reza Shah 1920-30 de-tribalized Iran largely. But you are right in the sense that there were various loyalties. Many Iranian politicians were bought off by Britain and Russia... so yes it is a bit confusing.

To bring this to an end: The references I used for my response are the up-to date scientific works, written by Westerner largely 1980-2000.

I don't want to poke around, but want to stress the accuracy of my response.

Just as a last tidbit: One of Royal Iran's best Politicians 1920-40's, who held various posts including Prime Minister, a man named Foroughi was actually Jewish (according to the British).

Okay enough now. :o) Don't let me distract you from work and leisure!

Cheers, SW

And we have too many Freepers who will not support McCain.

Perhaps if we had fewer McCain supporting Freepers who go around saying that McCain should pick Leiberman for Veep, anf that mcCain's election would mean the political death of various Freepers, this wouldn't be such a problem.

You are right, this issue might have very deep traction with the evangelicals. I am not much enamored of this group right now in view of their treatment of Mitt Romney, the misbehavior of some other prominent leaders, and the political inconsistency of other leaders.

By way of full disclosure, I consider myself to be one and take pride that I often post in defense of the rights and righteousness of evangelicals.

Then you remember Goldwater being both dumb and crazy? (BTW, I think that's a "magna", not "summa" with BO's JD).

Exactly what you have posted should be the cause for concern.

The fact that it is so close with Obama running says a lot.

No debate yet? That should worry you. McCain is a terrible speaker and did not perform well in the Primary debates.

"Kerry won Pennsylvania by 75,000 votes."

You make me chuckle ... you sound so sincere when you say Kerry "won" Pennsylvania. He only "won" Pennsylvania (the margin was 140,000 votes, by the way) because of diligent ballot stuffing and other fraud in Philadelphia.

Kerry won Philadelphia by an 80:20 margin, or 411,000 votes. In both 2000 and 2004 there were countless incidents of 100%, 102%, even 105% turnouts in some of the all-black precincts. I expect that some on the roster had long been dead, also.

Without Philly, Bush wins Pennsylvania. Without fraud, Bush wins Pennsylvania.

So forgive me but I have a tough time saying with a straight face that Kerry "won" Pennsylvania.

The problem is McCain is still behind the electoral college numbers. Right now McCain may lead in popular vote slightly but Obama has the 270 ECV to take the Presidency.

Well, here’s a good reason he’s under-performing. Drudge has a link to an article saying Lieberman is on his shortlist of VP candidates. If he picks him even the die-hard elect anyone but a Democrat posters here on FR will have to rethink their choice. Most conservatives have already written him off, as I have.

Wait for the debates,wait September.
Till now OUBSSAMA the show-man, P.HILTON’s fellow, fled the debates with McCAIN..as a liar coward he is!

Hope that McCAIN WILL take some stamina and give a more enthusiastic vision of USA and its CORE VALUES...
Till the end of AUGUST there will be a lot of stuff which could drive voters to support McCAIN if the man take off the gloves and the jacket
