The Russian Defence Ministry claims to have sunk a Georgian warship which was attacking its navy ships in the Black Sea, according to Russian new agencies.
If confirmed, the incident could mark a serious escalation of the fighting that has raged between Georgia and Russia in the breakaway region of South Ossetia.
The ITAR-Tass news agency quoted a ministry spokesman as saying that Georgian missile patrol boats twice tried to attack Russian ships, which fired back and sank one of the Georgian vessels.

This begs the question...If all those that support the U.S. as being the worlds cop, protector of freedom, why has the current U.S. administration not intervened militarily if we have friends in this fight? We are hearing SW broadcast that over 3,000 are dead, and countless injured.
To be honest, I am not expecting much of a response to the question.
The haloed one of course won't be going, but McCain may actually be there before too long. The President should be there first. The Free World is under attack and he is the leader of that Free World. Symbols are important.
I support the US as “world cop” and our failure to intervene (at least by supporting fully the Georgians) is simply proof that we have softened down to the point that we don’t live up to our role. This may be “just about Ossetia” in a far away little country... “not worth a war”. Just wait when the Soviet... I mean Russians stand at the Iranian and Turkish border and start invading Ukraine. Well good night then...
“why has the current U.S. administration not intervened militarily if we have friends in this fight?”
We’re spread thin with a tight military budget. Where’s NATO?
Ping
Yes, I voiced the same suggestion. Straight flight from Beijing to Tblisi. Up the ante.
Hope South Ossetia likes their new master.
>> President Bush needs to send Laura and Barbara home and fly on AF1 into Tblisi on Monday.
He best hurry then while there’s still a street left to land on.
Thanks for the post a_Turk.
Because the Bush foreign policy "leadership" are a bunch of amateurs who are clueless. Mr. Bush has used the US government, to include the military to attempt to mold the world to his view. Unfortunately, Mr. Bush never paid much attention to history in college, so his views on international relations are essentially based upon who he perceives as his friends. This is the fatal flaw of his policy.
I bet Georgia is really wishing they had rigged that tunnel with explosives.
I’d suggest that if the US is to be involved in every armed conflict involving a friend its going to be doing a lot of fighting over the next few decades.
Also, getting involved here will hand the Whitehouse to the Dems in Novembers. Thems the facts.
EU foreign ministers will meet early next week to discuss ways to resolve the crisis, French President Nicolas Sarkozys office said in an e-mailed statement from Paris yesterday.

A country of breakaway provinces, err, russian miitary bases.
Morons? Isn’t that a bit harsh?
What Russia is doing is no small matter- and yes- for us to intervene militarily at the moment would be...risky, to say the least- it still seems something other than some handwringing statements are called for..what would you suggest?
I really expect a lot to come out of that EU meeting / sarc.
Be careful what you wish for. The events of the past few days should tell the countries of the world to remember who its’ friends are.
I don't think so. It takes a special type of stupidity to advance the notion that we should somehow intervene militarily. These blokes are completely divorced from reality.
“Also, getting involved here will hand the Whitehouse to the Dems in November.”
I imagine Russians are toasting Putin right now like never before.

If we really want to help Georgia, we send them some tactical nukes. But do we want to help them that badly?
I didn’t read the story and I guess I should have, but what was the ex-Georgia FM saying we were partly to blame?
The Georgians are quite willing to fight and should likely be provided the means to do so. Additionally, the Ukrainians, Moldavians, and other former satellites of the Great Russian Empire, may choose to involve themselves in some manner.
The United State's foreign policy should be pro-freedom because free countries are not a threat to us. And that is the best long term approach.
You appear to be baiting an all or nothing response, but that is a false choice. We should always be pro-freedom, but be flexible enough to handle each situation in a way that works best at the time.
If Georgia is given the resources, Russia could be in a hurt locker. How many tanks and airplanes are the Russians willing to lose?
The other point in answer to your question is that you cannot forget that the overwhelming majority of South Oseetians want to become independent-—from Georgia.
The other thing to remember is that most Georgians in Georgia hate the governing party there too.
My post wished for nothing. Don't know where you got that. Feel free to answer the question.
... and afterwards, not have very many friends.
Well when you or they finally figure it out, feel free to answer the question.
Georgians are absolutely not united in this agression by their government. Most Georgians are fighting a kleptocracy put into power by the Soros machine.

When seconds count, the EU will convene a preliminary meeting to discuss possible routes of action, sometime next week. Looks like 48 hour liberty pass for the Russians.
Oh, I don’t know....
In the common sense-free world of Barack Obama, advocating for a fledgling democracy that is trying to align itself with the West and is threatened by the imperial aspirations of Russia constitutes a conflict of interest.
The McCain camp responded with this statement:
The Obama campaign’s attacks on Randy Scheunemann are disgraceful. Mr. Scheunemann proudly represented a small democracy that is one of our closest allies in a very dangerous region. Today, many are dead and Georgia is in crisis, yet the Obama campaign has offered nothing more than cheap and petty political attacks that are echoed only by the Kremlin. The reaction of the Obama campaign to this crisis, so at odds with our democratic allies and yet so bizarrely in sync with Moscow, doesn’t merely raise questions about Senator Obamas judgmentit answers them.
The American people once elected Jimmy Carter to defend their interests against Leonid Brezhnev and the Russian Empire. It will be interesting to see whether they are willing to do it again.

OK, I'll put you down as this is political strategy, and this can all wait until the U.S. election is over. Thanks.
Already have. The European elite can quibble over American “hypocrisy”, inconsistency, miscalculations, or even being slow to lead when we have the most troops stationed all over the world where there is trouble. But the elephant in the room is that Russia is the aggressor, and just about everyone else minus the US and Georgia’s neighbors is just quarterbacking from the sidelines.
At George C Scott said in Patton: “We need to stop pussyfooting with the God **** Russians.”
They have found their limits before.
Already have what?
You hit the nail on the head elenil21. The EU is ramping up the propaganda machine commensurate with the new world order which allows them to bomb a sovereign country - the former Yugoslavia - which was trying to put down various declarations of independence. So the West supported independence claims from as recently as the Muslim dominated Kosovo. The South Ossetian people voted roughly 98-99% in a largely European supervised vote in 2006 for independence from Georgia. It has been largely independent since the early 90`s and it has a majority Christian population. I guess the West has no problem in supporting an Islamic majority led call for independence - Kosovo - but is of another mind when it comes to South Ossetia.
“why has the current U.S. administration not intervened militarily if we have friends in this fight?”
George Bush is the worst President we have ever had. He’s ieven more incompetent than his two predecessors and the Presidents-in-waiting look even worse than him.
I did answer the question. Funny that you didn't repost that.
I’ll have to refer you to post #24. Tailgunner Joe appears to have more to say.
His Secretary of State Rice was supposedly an expert on Russian affairs - tripe.JUST the mere fact that Russia was able to pull this mobilization off without our intelligence people knowing it shows how incompetent we have become after three mediocre Administrations
Well when you or they finally figure it out, feel free to answer the question.

Right, and when you/they, finally figure out who the bad guy here is, let us know.
