Mad Cow Rules Hit Sperm Banks' Patrons

By Rob Stein

Washington Post Staff Writer

Wednesday, August 13, 2008; Page A01

When Julie Peterson decided to have a baby on her own two years ago, she picked a tall, blond, blue-eyed Danish engineer as a sperm donor to match her own Scandinavian heritage. But when she went back to the sperm bank to use the same donor to have another child, she was stunned to discover that the federal government had made it impossible.

"I just cried," said Peterson, 43, who lives in North Carolina. "I was in complete shock. I hadn't thought about anything but having another baby with this donor. It was just so surprising and bewildering."

No, it's not a parody:

Now, as the remaining vials of Nordic semen frozen in U.S. sperm banks are running out, a small but desperate number of would-be parents are frantic. Peterson has flown repeatedly to Denmark, and went again this week, to try to get pregnant with sperm from the same donor. Others are going to Canada or Mexico, or haggling with other American women who have leftover vials.

Anyone selling his semen to anonymous women (and foresaking the fun part, I might stress), deserves getting pwned by ambulance chasing trial lawyers.

With a name and a heritage like that, she should move to Minnesota.

She'd be just another face in the crowd here, though...

except for the Somalis.

Incidentally, if she's 43 now, and has another child, she'll be a washed-up geezer at 60 when the kids enter college.

Cheers!

Surely, if the FDA is so concerned about Americans contracting Jacob-Kreuzfeld from Danish sperm, surely fresh sperm would pose no less risk than frozen sperm.

The conclusion is inescapable that to protect future generations, ALL sex between American women and men who have “lived in the United Kingdom or France for more than three months, or elsewhere in Europe for more than five years, since 1980” must be entirely banned.

For that matter, who is to say that the Jacob-Kreuzfeld proteins are derived only from the sperm donor? What about the egg?

For the good of future generations, by the same logic, pregnancies need to be totally banned for every woman who lived in the United Kingdom or France for more than three months, or elsewhere in Europe for more than five years, since 1980.

We ought to be logical and consistent, ought we not?

If you personally know two people who died of BSE in YOUR “small” community, you must live in Great Britain. The odds of you living in America and having that occur are literally a billion to one.

In New Jersey, a few years ago, I think there were multiple cases in one small area. All of the people frequented a race track and they thought that was the source.

LOL

I just read through this thread. Very odd. Men seem to get very threatened when a woman wants sperm from a tall, blonde, blue-eyed male.

Of course a freeper guy who goes to Russia or the Ukraine to get sex with a tall blue-eyed blonde is a hero.

I'm no expert on the "life" position but I believe "family" plays an important part in it.

Not "middle-aged crazy woman turkey-bastes because no man is desperate enough for sex to get near her"

And I think a lot of pro-lifers would say she should adopt rather than turkey-baste.

Frankly, she probably shouldn't be around kids. She's obviously not stable.

Nope. Rural America, the Midwest. And a third person has the same blood profile as his dog who died from Mad Cow, according to his doctor. And one of the other two was a patient at the Mayo Clinic.

This is quite different from someone who finds themselves unintentionally pregnant and makes the right choice to carry the child to term. This is a selfish woman thinking only of her own desires, and giving no thought whatsoever to the needs of the child.

So, no, spending money and chasing around trying to get a human toy to fulfill selfish desires is NOT the 'life' position as you call it.

Who appears to you to "feel threatened"? As a Conservative place, most here are pro-family and don't have much enthusiasm for women with issues like Peterson. I doubt the comments would be different if she would be looking for small Mexican men.

Of course a freeper guy who goes to Russia or the Ukraine to get sex with a tall blue-eyed blonde is a hero.

The issue is the woman's selfish desire for a human toy, not the fact that she wants sperm from a Nordic man. It would be just as selfish and disgusting for a man to purposefully get a woman pregnant with the intent of taking the child once it is born and raising it himself without a mother.

Is everyone who conceives via in vitro vile? Or just this woman? Helping the childless to have children that they want to bring into the world. Vile. Nope, sorry, can't quite get to the connection you are trying to make.

Hero? That's great!!

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's SUPERJOHN! SUPERJOHN has loads of expendable cash to support his morally vapid behaviour. Whereas most regular johns get by with run of the mill American streetwalkers, SUPERJOHN spends buckets of ducats to enjoy the company exotic Eastern European women!

An absurdly illogical statement. A single woman, who becomes pregnant and chooses to have the child instead of having an abortion, is not genuinely pro-life because she has no husband. I'm sorry, that's a complete crock.

A single woman, who becomes pregnant and chooses to have the child instead of having an abortion, is not genuinely pro-life because she has no husband.

Of course her decision not to abort is the only right one, but the kid then still needs a father. Such a single mom, due to circumstances (for example dumped by boyfriend/husband), of course is pro-life. But for the good of her child she should look for a father for the kid. I don't blame them at all.

However a single Mom (or Lesbian couples) who rejects the concept of fatherhood/male-female partnership and decides on purpose to have a child without a father is cruel and hampering to the development of the child. Of course she should not abort. But artificial insemnation should be only a option for couples unable to produce children in the first place. Not for single women/same-sex couples who reject the concept of a family.

OK. I think I see where you are going.

Are you suggesting that the state (I don’t know who else you would have enforce your ‘artificial insemnation should be only a option for couples unable to produce children in the first place’) determine who can and cannot have children via artificial insemination?

Do you really want the state involved in that?
