Mad Cow Rules Hit Sperm Banks' Patrons

By Rob Stein

Washington Post Staff Writer

Wednesday, August 13, 2008; Page A01

When Julie Peterson decided to have a baby on her own two years ago, she picked a tall, blond, blue-eyed Danish engineer as a sperm donor to match her own Scandinavian heritage. But when she went back to the sperm bank to use the same donor to have another child, she was stunned to discover that the federal government had made it impossible.

"I just cried," said Peterson, 43, who lives in North Carolina. "I was in complete shock. I hadn't thought about anything but having another baby with this donor. It was just so surprising and bewildering."

Surely, if the FDA is so concerned about Americans contracting Jacob-Kreuzfeld from Danish sperm, surely fresh sperm would pose no less risk than frozen sperm.

The conclusion is inescapable that to protect future generations, ALL sex between American women and men who have “lived in the United Kingdom or France for more than three months, or elsewhere in Europe for more than five years, since 1980” must be entirely banned.

For that matter, who is to say that the Jacob-Kreuzfeld proteins are derived only from the sperm donor? What about the egg?

For the good of future generations, by the same logic, pregnancies need to be totally banned for every woman who lived in the United Kingdom or France for more than three months, or elsewhere in Europe for more than five years, since 1980.

We ought to be logical and consistent, ought we not?

"A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle."

or as my son said,

"A child needs a father like a fish needs water."

Cheers!

Finally, someone sees the real issue here. I know two people in my small community who died from Mad Cow. It is beyond unpleasant and beyond hope for a cure.

Julie Peterson..... She couldn't find a husband??????

Chisel away that 3/4" thick makeup and who knows what she looks like?. ;)

And her comments in the article don't lead one to think she is the Princess of Pleasantland.

If you personally know two people who died of BSE in YOUR “small” community, you must live in Great Britain. The odds of you living in America and having that occur are literally a billion to one.

In New Jersey, a few years ago, I think there were multiple cases in one small area. All of the people frequented a race track and they thought that was the source.

Words escape me. What a vile person (no pun intended) and what a vile industry. I bet all her pillow-cases have eyeholes cut in them.

She's going to all this expense and trouble because she wants to conceive, not abort. Isn't that supposed to be the "life" position?

What’s wrong with trotting up to DC to visit the Norwegian embassy? I’m sure there’s a few good men up there that can help her out.

Or hang around any decent bar in Minnesota.

LOL

I just read through this thread. Very odd. Men seem to get very threatened when a woman wants sperm from a tall, blonde, blue-eyed male.

Of course a freeper guy who goes to Russia or the Ukraine to get sex with a tall blue-eyed blonde is a hero.

I'm no expert on the "life" position but I believe "family" plays an important part in it.

Not "middle-aged crazy woman turkey-bastes because no man is desperate enough for sex to get near her"

And I think a lot of pro-lifers would say she should adopt rather than turkey-baste.

Frankly, she probably shouldn't be around kids. She's obviously not stable.

I hadn't thought about anything but having another baby with this donor fulfilling my selfish desires for another human toy.

There. . .fixed it.

Nope. Rural America, the Midwest. And a third person has the same blood profile as his dog who died from Mad Cow, according to his doctor. And one of the other two was a patient at the Mayo Clinic.

She should get a husband then. A genuine pro-life stance requires a pro-family position.

This is quite different from someone who finds themselves unintentionally pregnant and makes the right choice to carry the child to term. This is a selfish woman thinking only of her own desires, and giving no thought whatsoever to the needs of the child.

So, no, spending money and chasing around trying to get a human toy to fulfill selfish desires is NOT the 'life' position as you call it.

Who appears to you to "feel threatened"? As a Conservative place, most here are pro-family and don't have much enthusiasm for women with issues like Peterson. I doubt the comments would be different if she would be looking for small Mexican men.

Of course a freeper guy who goes to Russia or the Ukraine to get sex with a tall blue-eyed blonde is a hero.

Do you know a Freeper doing this and being "celebrated" here?
