Source Shares Theory Of Caylee's Death: Investigation Still Considered Missing Person Case

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A source inside the Orange County Sheriff's Office shared a new theory in the Caylee Anthony disappearance on Tuesday.

At the center of the theory is the possibility that the missing toddler is dead.

Authorities at the Orange County Sheriff's Office said they're focusing on three key dates in their investigation.

Members of the Anthony family said they refuse to believe the theory that Caylee died, but there are many people who think it is a possibility.

"I think it was accidental, and I think her mom tried to cover it up, and it kind of blew up in her face," Julie Herring said.

As speculation begins to swirl in the case, a source close to the investigation said the theory that Caylee is dead is possible. They said she may have died in an accident on June 16, but they're also looking into June 17 or 18.

"But there's a lot of things that they're looking at, and I guess they're waiting until they get results on everything before we put this puzzle together," Orange County Sheriff's Office spokesman Carlos Padilla said.

Officially, the Orange County Sheriff's Office is still treating the investigation as a missing person case.

"We have nothing to indicate she is not alive. Obviously, statistically and historically, one of the facets of life is more times than not, unfortunately, these don't turn out well," Padilla said.

More charges may be filed against Casey Anthony within the next 48 hours. A friend said she stole $700 from her.

Investigators said she may have used her parents' credit cards without permission, and they said she continues to lie to them. All of it could lead to a theft, credit card fraud and false statement charge.

"There's more to this saga, this story, than what people are led to believe and doesn't realize. There really is," grandfather George Anthony said.

Caylee's grandfather said he refuses to believe she could be dead and believes the toddler was kidnapped.

"These people know that they're being watched. They know it," George Anthony said.

George Anthony remains positive and said he'll continue to drive around with a mobile billboard displaying her picture until she's found. He has a background in law enforcement and said he's tapping into resources from his past.

If the little girl’s death was accidential why would the mom be out partying? It sounds like at the very least a form of sadistic child abuse. The mother is a sociopath, at least that’s the way it appears.

Definitely a sociopath, as I have personal experience with one, my brother, who was diagnosed as a sociopath when he was 12. He is now 52, and still a sociopath. This Casey is just right for the sociopath genre. All id................

According to the grandparents, their daughter, Cathy, stole gasoline from their garage around the time of Caylee’s disappearance. The grandparents have said they don’t want to lose two people they love, which somehow explains their refusal to cooperate completely with police. They’ve said Cathy’s a pathological liar, and surely they know what she’s capable of. (She didn’t start anti-social behavior yesterday.)

They know her intimately, and heaven help us, we’ve gotten to know her from those detestable bar photos. Cathy doesn’t care about anything but saving her own sorry hide, and when all is said and done, Caylee deserves a decent burial where people who loved her can mourn her loss.

I think that I remember hearing that the parents told the daughter that she had to take more responsably for herself and the child and it was time to get a place of her own and to move out with the child

Really? How about the fact that a 2 year old is missing? A 2 year old cannot live on her own.

How can you lose something you never had? Sociopath’s don’t form normal relationships with people. How can her mother defend this kind of anti-social behavior? It’s a little shocking that people can be so different in their values. There are some people in this world who will defend their children even when their children murder their own grandchildren. It is beyond comprehension. I was raised with the value you don’t defend your children’s bad behavior. I don’t understand people like Casey’s mother. She is a different breed.

True, but the grandparents and Casey claim the girl is "kidnapped"...........even though no ransom has been demanded or reason given for the kidnapping.............

Casey’s mother seems odd also. The first Greta interview the grandmother mostly talked about herself, how tired she was and that she didn’t want Greta to ask her stupid questions. I then changed the channel. (The only time I ever see Greta is when I haven’t yet walked over to the TV to change it to Jeopardy). Casey’s mother is a strange case herself.

I think Casey’s Mom (Cindy) is just in deep denial and not allowing herself to think about what might have really happened. However it appears that recently she is starting to come around to what really happened.

Sounds like a case of a person who has never had any responsibility (Casey) having a child. I hope I’m wrong but I doubt it.

I was raised the same way as you, and have attempted to raise my children the same way. But, this "breed" you mention is all too common these days. I've never understood it. They raise their children mainly by absence and indulgement and when their kids do something wrong, they defend the kids as fervently as if they were defending themselves. I see it all the time.

“A source close to the investigation said that more and more they believe Caylee probably died in some sort of accident on June 16 — hours after she was last seen by grandfather George Anthony.”

The cops know she is dead. They just have to prove it BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT..............

“the little girl died in the car in the hot Florida sun”

That’s what several people are thinking and it does make a lot of sense as far as being something that Casey would probably be apt to do.

Excerpt from Greta’s show last night, about the PHONE CALL TIMELINE of the day that Caylee disappeared:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,402721,00.html

VAN SUSTEREN: Coming up: The timeline is coming together piece by piece by piece. Missing Caylee last seen by her grandparents on Monday, June 16. Who did Caylee — Casey — Caylee’s jailed mother call that day? And at what specific time? We have the phone records and now you will, too.

[snip]

VAN SUSTEREN: Monday, June 16, is the last day that Caylee Anthony’s grandparents saw the little girl. And tonight, we have detailed phone records of who Caylee’s now jailed mother was calling that day. Joining us live on the ground in Orlando is “On the Record” producer Steph Watts. All right, Steph, let’s talk about these phone records. Can you tell me — go ahead and refer to the record itself, but what happened on Monday beginning about 4:10?

WATTS: Well...

VAN SUSTEREN: Let me back up. It goes — it started at 3:03, 3:03 PM.

WATTS: OK, Greta, and let me just back up a little bit for you just to set the stage a little bit. Don’t forget, at 12:50, just before 1:00 PM, George claimed that he saw Casey and Caylee leave the house. Then George himself leaves the house at 2:30. Now let’s jump ahead.

Casey’s making phone calls on her cell phone. 3:03 PM, she calls her dad on his cell phone. 4:10, she calls her mom at work. 4:11, she calls her mom on her cell phone. 4:13, she calls her mom on her cell phone. 4:14, she calls her mom at work. 4:19, she calls Tony Lazzaro (ph). 4:21, she calls Jesse Grund (ph). 4:24, mom on her cell. 6:32, mom on home phone. 6:33, voice-mail. 7:06, mom home. And 7:20, she calls her friend, Amy.

Now, if you notice, Greta, these calls that are a minute apart — if I call you and I don’t — I get your voice-mail and I hang up, that registers as a minute.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right. Tell me — let’s give names. Tony Lazzaro, that’s her boyfriend?

WATTS: Yes, Tony Anthony (SIC) is the boyfriend who was the promoter at Club Fusian, which we’re going to take a look at a little later on in the show. And Amy Huisinga (ph) is the girl that the mother found the resume in the car and she was the one who took Cindy to where Casey was. And Casey was using her car hat week while Amy (SIC) was away, and unfortunately, Casey also stole money from her and checks.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right. Now, in all fairness, if you look at my phone records, you know, it might show a flurry of phone calls, as well. But nonetheless, it’s just a piece of the puzzle. All right. Let’s — now, you don’t have anything for the next day, Tuesday, do you. You were - - you suddenly jumped to Wednesday. Why don’t you have Tuesday’s records?

WATTS: Well, Greta, it’s interesting because the 17th seems to be sort of a blurry day for us in this timeline. As you know, you and I are working this story. We’re trying to put this timeline together. The 17th, we haven’t come up with the records yet. We don’t know what was happening on the 17th. Of course, obviously, very curious as to what was going on on the 17th. The next phone records we have are the 18th. And again, that date is significant because that’s the date that Casey borrowed the shovel from the neighbor.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right. And so tell me — give me the list of calls on the 18th for which we have records.

WATTS: Sure. Again, on the 18th — and again, we don’t know what time exactly she borrowed the shovel from them, but on the 18th at 12:33 PM, she calls mom at home. 12:34, Mom cell. 12:35, mom at home. 12:36, dad’s cell. 1:09, mom’s cell. 1:11, mom home.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right. Now, it of the June 16 phone calls that you first recited, do you have any idea whether it pinged off the tower near her home to indicate that she was likely making or could have been making those calls from home?

WATTS: Well, that’s a good question, Greta, and I’m sure investigators are taking a look at that. They obviously haven’t released that information to us because it’s part of their ongoing investigation. But now, remember, the last phone call she made was 7:20 to Amy. There’s no incoming or outgoing calls on Casey’s cell phone, Greta, until 11:00 AM the next day.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right. Steph, thank you.

WATTS: You’re welcome.

And sometimes children are sold, either to someone who really wants a child to raise, or to someone who wants to exploit them in vile ways for profit. And in this case, I think there’s also a slim possibility that someone took Caylee in the belief that they were “rescuing” her. But the dead body smell in the car trunk certainly points to a dead Caylee.

Thank you for that! That’s exactly what I missed last night.
It kills me when the grandfather keeps saying “these people,” I wonder about all of those phone calls early on and what any of them know.
It’s so ironic that they have Casey in protective custody. Too bad Caylee wasn’t shielded that way.
I was surprised to read about the forensic test on the odor, I had never heard of that before.
I hope that whatever info is supposed to be forthcoming this week can be disclosed soon.

Wonder if they’ve gotten any results from the tests on the car that had the bad odor. Seems like it’s been long enough to have gotten some hint as to what was in the trunk of the car. If a body has decomposed to the point you can smell it outside the car then it’s certainly going to leave some residue.

I was surprised to read about the forensic test on the odor, I had never heard of that before.

It's apparently a new technology developed by a university in Tennessee. Tests for traces of gases that are known constituents of decomposing bodies...

Frankly, I wasn’t aware of odor tests. Shows how easy it is to get behind the tech curve in today’s world. It makes sense though, surely something that smells enough to be detected outside the car has to leave some sort of residue.

In an earlier career I had occasion to deal with remains in various stages of decomposition. It’s an odor that is not easily mistaken for the something else.

The odor gas tests may be so new that they haven’t been admitted in any court yet. So they may be just a side issue until that happens..........DNA will be the clincher. The shovel, the gas cans, the odor in the car, the lies, are all circumstantial. With a positive DNA match of the stain in the trunk of Casey’s parents car and Caylee’s DNA from her clothing at the grandparent’s home, the whole house of cards will collapse..................

We have nothing to indicate she is not alive.

So now the scent of a decomposing corpse in Casey's car and on her slacks is "nothing." A suspicious stain in the trunk(which one reporter said LE admitted to her was blood) is "nothing." All of Casey's odd behavior is "nothing."

From the looks of things, everyone Casey knows can barely support themselves. It's hard to believe they would voluntarily take on another mouth to feed.

Until scientific evidence is produced, all those other things (odors, behaviors) are “circumstantial”. Even a “blood” stain has to be proven by objective testing that it’s human and not animal.............

Agreed. It’s circumstantial evidence. The PR guy says there is no evidence, and that’s absurd, especially given the scent of a decaying corpse.

When a LEO says “evidence” they mean something concrete and in their hand. Laymen are often relying on emotional contents of the story. In a court of law, you must have solid, scientific, corroborated evidence to present to a judge and jury..........

It is not the odor of rotting pizza or a Cuban sandwich. It's an odor all to itself.

I have had to recover bodies that had been buried in a shallow grave in the Florida sun for a month or longer. And those that had been dead for a week or so. One was in a locked car over the long Labor Day weekend, in the direct sunlight. The car was covered with flies that couldn't reach the remains.

At some point in my youth I lost my sense of smell. Well, not completely lost, but it was markedly diminished. I would smell something, but only for the first few breaths and then nothing. That made me a natural choice for which ambulance to dispatch for a recovery. It also made it very difficult for me to get and keep an attendant. Word quickly spread that since I had no sense of smell I, and my crew, would be the first choice to recover a body.

That's been a lot of years ago, over 40 now, and I still remember the odor. Strange, I have memories of odors, especially pleasant ones like roses and vanilla extract, but I can no longer smell anything, period. I'm sure it's an allergy thing.

Scott Peterson was convicted on “circumstantial” evidence. Another form of evidence is “an eye-witness” account.
A gun with fingerprints is only circumstantial.
DNA is physical, and also circumstantial.

Prosecutors have to tie the time-line(s), circumstances and physical evidence together when there are no witnesses, videotapes or recorded confessions.

O.J. Simpson should have been convicted with the tons of circumstantial and physical evidence presented........but we remember how that turned out.

I also don’t get this. I have two daughters I love to pieces, but if one of them killed a child I wouldn’t even try to defend them. Neither would her mom or the other daughter. I wouldn’t stop loving her, but she’d be on her own with the legal system.

For that matter, if I killed a child I wouldn’t try to defend myself. Some things put one beyond the pale.

If Casey were my daughter and I had no clue of what happened to my missing granddaughter, I'd "slap Casey silly" if I could get to her. This charade is ridiculous.

Casey Anthony refuses to tell the truth. I'm not surprised that she didn't want any visits from her family lately. Continually lying to her parents and brother, her only supporters, may be wearing on her.

Nevertheless, the police have their own ways of getting to the truth.
