"The City Council is poised to approve new legislation on Thursday that would bar stores from keeping their doors open when air-conditioners or central cooling systems are in use. Any store or restaurant in violation of the new rule will first be issued a written warning and charged fines for subsequent violations. The second time within an 18-month period that a business is found to be violating the law, a fine of $200 would be charged by the city for every open door. That fine would increase to $400 a door for any subsequent violations during the same period."

Gee, isn’t the fine self inflicted (in the form of high energy costs) from the “wasters” themselves? Lets face it, the Liberals are Nazis at heart.

So the government is worried about wasted energy. Let’s start with the street lights I see burning all day long.

The AC in the government buildings must be turned off, too, since they can heat it all by themselves with hot air.

Absolutely unbelievable. These people want to have government slap other people around to suit their green little dream world. They won't be happy until every bit of energy is rationed and you have gestapo officers patrolling the streets extorting money from violators. They'll scream like stuck pigs when the government starts coming after them to fulfill someone else's idea of the perfect society.
Outlaw air conditioning and only outlaws (and government offices) will have air conditioning.

I read the comments.
Ya just gotta love NYers. I know, I was one for more than 50 years.
Back in the 60’s after the first Great Blackout there was a big campaign to lower electric usage. It was called Save-A-Watt. Well, us lemming NYers did just that. We conserved electricity to help ConEd meet demand. Funny thing happened....ConEd didn't meet projected revenues because of all the conservation so they upped the rates for everyone.

Charlotte, NC did something very similar but with water...
They raised the rates after the revenue drop.

I was raised down south and when I was little we didn’t have any air conditioning. I remember how bad it was even today. The old houses had 12’ ceilings and transoms at the tops of the doors for a reason.

Not sure if it’s still the case, but it wasn’t all that long ago that city office buildings in lower Manhattan (these are VERY large buildings) all had window units hanging on the outside.

Excellent.
Why should these fools be allowed to waste energy.
Now to mandate internal temps for residences.
If an activity is deemed harmful to the public good and general welfare, then why should it not be under the purview of government.

Do you one better cutout all school busing. Great idea! Form’m up, march’m out.
End all this nonsense of Mommy driving them to & from school everyday.
The Block Mothers can take turns as drill sergeant. The walking will do them ALL a world of good.
Cut down on time, money & energy wasted on treadmills, too.

They won't be happy until every bit of energy is rationed and you have gestapo officers patrolling the streets extorting money from violators.I have a GREAT idea!
Instead of the government worrying about people wasting all of the energy the government gives them, why don't we install meters, and SELL it to them? Maybe even use a step-structure, so the more the use, the more each additional unit costs!
That way, if they use more, they have to pay more; and when the bill gets too high, they'll automatically cut back!
I know that is a radical idea, but it just might be crazy enough to work!

The city council is overstepping its authority. It has no authority to regulate energy usage.

Don’t know if you were being facetious, but I installed a system in a major NYC department store for just that reason. Once the store reached a certain demand, the cost /KWhr increased. With this system, as demand neared the benchmark, it would shed load by cutting different AC units around the store according to pre-programmed criteria. For example, stock areas would be cut off first, then perhaps other peripheral areas, then offices and so on.

I need one or two to follow me around all day to make sure I don't do anything unhealthy to myself or to others, brush my teeth and get plenty of sleep.

Dont know if you were being facetious, Only facetious in that I had the government giving them the government's power, since they act like it (along with our earnings, investments, property, and everything else) is theirs.
IOW, we already have the solution; you're a part of it; and none of it is based on fines.
A lot of our electric co-op's commercial customers have load-shedding contracts & equipment, and have for years.
