Talking Back to a Black Man
Townhall.com ^ | August 15, 2008 | Burt Prelutsky

Posted on 08/15/2008 4:59:59 AM PDT by Kaslin

A few weeks ago, I was listening to a radio talk show when a black man called in to take Barack Obama to task for suggesting that black men were sloughing off their responsibility as fathers. The caller didn’t deny recent data that indicated that 80% of black babies were being born to unwed mothers. Instead, he said that this dire situation wasn’t the fault of irresponsible young men and women, but, instead, was the logical result of rampant racism in our country. He claimed that black American males simply can’t find jobs, and that’s the reason they don’t support their families.

I waited for the talk show host to set him straight, but it never happened. So I guess, as is so often the case in this cowardly, politically correct, age, I’ll have to do it myself.

First of all if I had been hosting the show, I probably would have laughed in the caller’s face. Which may very well explain why I’m not hosting a radio talk show.

The notion that in 2008, anyone can seriously suggest that it is whitey’s fault that millions of black men are abrogating their responsibility to get married and help raise their children would be laughable if the results weren’t so tragic both for the black community and for America at large.

How is it, I would have challenged the caller, that his grandparents and their grandparents managed to get married and bring up their youngsters in spite of Jim Crow laws, separate-but-definitely-unequal schools and rampant racism that kept them in menial jobs, but that all these years later, in spite of decades of Affirmative Action, government-enforced equal opportunity in the workplace and quota systems that benefit minorities, black men lack the ability to do the same? And how is it that people all over the world who are much poorer than American blacks manage to pull it off?

It’s obvious that millions of black men simply prefer shirking their responsibilities, while simultaneously insisting that they’re the victims of white society. They make a huge deal of demanding respect, of insisting they’re men and not boys, but all the while millions of them do precious little to earn anybody’s respect or to prove that they are anything but irresponsible brats.

How can I be so certain that I’m right and that the angry caller wasn’t? Simple. After all, how can it be possible that all these millions of black men are unable to support their babies, but millions of single black women somehow manage to do it?

Black American males with at least some public school education can't find jobs, yet 20 million English illiterate illegals can. What's wrong with this story?

One of these irresponsibles lived next door to us for a time. Unemployed and living off his girlfriend. He impregnated his live in. This was the third woman he had shared his seed with. Well, I’m sure it was more than three, but only three that took root. Little baby comes along and he is out the door two months later.

And it's all paid for by Mr and Mrs Taxpayer!

I mean, dig it: If the guy does NOT think of himself as a victim he has to work, to show responsibility, to change diapers, and all that. But if he's a victim he gets to hang out on the street all day hating folks.

For some people, that's a no-brainer. Let's see: work or hanging out, which shall I choose?

As long as we subsidize indolence, drug abuse, and bastardy we're going to short change the services which government is supposed to provide AND rot the hearts of a sizable portion of the populace.

You made some very good points, all of which are causing Jesse and Al huge discomfort. These two, and many others who attempt to speak for the black community, try to use racism to offload their own guilt, lack of responsibility, and effort. There are simply too many minorities in this county who have “made it” to take the “I’m a victim” drivel seriously any more.

Historically, black families have been relatively stable. From 1880 to 1960, the proportion of black children raised in two-parent families held steady at around 70 percent; in 1925 Harlem, it was 85 percent. Today, only 38 percent of black children are raised in two-parent families. In 1940, black illegitimacy was 16 percent; today, it's 70 percent.

Man, am I tired of hearing about his one...especially from Obama. In my mind, the fact that 320,000+ Union soldiers died is enough reparations for me. Add to that the unbalanced proportion of entitlements that go to blacks and I'd say we've more than paid enough. I'm tired of politician trolling for votes using my tax dollars as bait.

Keep playing the race card. Each time you do, you are alienating White, Mexican and Asian Americans more and more. And, you are not helping your candidate, B. Hussein Obama. We are sick and tired of being called racist every time we turn around and that frustration will be reflected in the voting booth.

While I generally agree with Prelutsky’s arguments, I can also see some validity for the black caller’s perspectives. Let’s examine some of the reasons he thinks what he thinks -

1) Pandering by the government and the DBM to the race-baiters. Non-stop pandering to race-baiters like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Louis Farrakhan and myriad others gives them legitimacy in the eyes of those who believe their brand of racism.

2) “Black Liberation Theology” as taught by the likes of Rev. Wright.

3) Stereotypes of blacks in movies/television. Mass media entertainment is a major part of the way that blacks perceive themselves. Today, it is virtually impossible to see any film or TV show in which blacks are positively portrayed as anything but drug sellers, thugs and criminals. Too many of them have no view of life outside their little corner of the world and believe this is what they are supposed to be.

All of these influences speak volumes about the way that blacks perceive themselves. Within that perception, black men are almost never portrayed as caring, responsible husbands and fathers. Whether we want to agree with it or not, the images that blacks see about themselves influence what they believe about themselves, much the same way that Madison Avenue portrays various groups in their advertising. Too many targeted groups or individuals allow the image of their targeted group in the media to influence the way that they see themselves.

While the caller’s complaint laid the blame on whites for the poor choices too many black men make in their lives, the fact is that the influences are valid, they just don’t stem from white people trying to oppress blacks. Blacks like Jackson, Obama and Sharpton are much more adept at that than whites are. At the end of the day, it is both telling and unfortunate that the caller honestly believes what he believes about blacks and whites. His view of the world is largely incorrect and corrupted by the racists in his own ethnic group.

A co-worker of mine is African American, but has an intact marriage and college-bound kids. Nobody would guess her race by talking to her on the phone. The caboose in her family is 5 years old, but addresses men as “Mr.” and women as “Mrs.” He speaks better English than most nine year olds. While I realize the advanced speeech is is partly a function of older brothers and sisters, the advanced manners is mainly a function of involved parents.

We have a tax system and welfare system that promote Liberal/Progressive policies by penalizing marriage, rewarding those who have children out of wedlock and rewarding those who have more children than they can afford.

The IRS also acts as an adjunct to the welfare system with Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.

The black caller is almost correct. The current black family crisis is the result of “whitey”. A white man named Lyndon Johnson created a welfare state that encouraged poor men to move out so their wife’s/lovers/baby mommas could get welfare. The caller just needs to connect the dots and realize it was liberalism, not racism.

Like every other problem that we see in society today,

the cause is a liberal policy.

Why should these guys get jobs when they can live on welfare? Why should they acquire job skills? No need to.

Why should women be more choosy about their sex partners? Why should they require commitment or stability before making babies?
The libs are there with checks, public housing, food stamps, etc. No need to actually make a stable family before procreating.

There is NO DOUBT in my mind that the INTENT of liberal policies is the

DESTRUCTION OF THE TRADITIONAL FAMILY

to be replaced by the state.
1984 anyone? It was a WARNING, libs, not a SUGGESTION.

Blacks have destroyed the public school system in the US and will probably wind up destroying Western civilization.

Beg to differ, but it's misguided efforts by liberal whites, designed to accommodate blacks, which have destroyed the public school system.

Bussing destroyed neighborhood schools and, thus, depressed parental involvement by white and black parents alike. Dumbing down the curriculum was designed to perversely improve the relative performance of blacks.

At no time did the liberal establishment ever consider that blacks were actually capable of competing with whites -- consequently, they were never asked to.

Under the circumstances, black children were as much the victims of liberal dogma as white children have been.

"I’d say teachers unions are far more to blame."

Originally, in the mid-60's, when unqualified Blacks couldn't pass the (already established) teaching tests,etc...the tests were dumbed down until a sufficent number passed. The school system could probably have survived with just this limited number of unqualified Black teachers entering the schools each year but now, the tests are so dumbed down that massive numbers of unqualified Whites started entering the system too. And, have continued every year since.

The teachers unions have used the charge of racism to defend even the most vile attitude and behavior as diversity that must be 'understood' by the majority White population. Today it is impossible to fire a teacher for anything.

Can't believe I'm doing this, but I must also respectfully disagree.

I don't blame the skin color - I blame the mindset of victimhood, failure, and thuggery that is shared by all too many people of all races. And I blame those that insist we look the other way in the name of diversity, and the industries that make money off of these failures. That includes both corporations (e.g., TV), and the welfare bureaucracies.

They make a huge deal of demanding respect, of insisting they’re men and not boys, but all the while millions of them do precious little to earn anybody’s respect or to prove that they are anything but irresponsible brats”

This is the obvious and natural result of a culture of affirmative action and 40+ years of being told that whites are “racists” and “oppressors” who conspire to “keep the black man down”.

What OTHER result could have been possible from such a scheme?

We now have something like 13% or so of our entire population that believes that whites are racists, as a matter of course.

Did we really, REALLY expect “racial harmony” to come from this?

I laugh when I hear EuroAmericans chant about “how far we’ve come” in terms of race relations in America. We’ve come nowhere. If anything, white and black culture, mores, and general perceptions are _more_ apart today than they were in the 1960’s.

The EuroAmericans have been fools, thinking they could “fix” racial problems with tokens and restrictions upon whites (i.e., “affirmative action”). Nothing has been fixed, and indeed, great damage has been done.

The truth is that - at the deepest levels of human behavior - race is one of the most uniting, and also the most divisive, factors. For decades we have tried to sweept that under the American rug, but it keeps creeping back out at us.

Fortunately, there are a lot of EuroAmericans who are finally going to be awakened to such truths by the course of this election, and by it’s aftermath....

Crisis in boys and young men, says minister David Lammy

A lack of male role models and glorification of "bling culture" has caused a crisis among boys in Britain, according to a government minister.

By Jon Swaine
Last Updated: 1:12PM BST 14 Aug 2008

An entire generation of young men, including those from middle-class families, is growing up shunning work and seeing crime as a shortcut to wealth and success, David Lammy, a Universities minister, warns.

Writing in a magazine article, Mr Lammy says that boys, "whose parents become strangers in a culture of long working hours" are "struggling to find their place in society," and are driven to crime in a culture riven with a "fetishisation of money" and centring on instant gratification.

"In a 'bling' culture, criminality easily becomes a short cut to symbols of wealth and power that will otherwise take years of hard work to achieve," Mr Lammy writes in the New Statesman.

Referring to the title of a successful album by the US rapper, 50 Cent, who was shot several times while working as a drug dealer, Mr Lammy writes: "Why, one boy asked me, was I worried about his grades at school, when he might not live long enough to get a job? This is the world of 'Get Rich Or Die Trying'."

Mr Lammy writes that "unhealthy attitudes towards sex, money and violence" prevail among many young men disoriented by the changing place of masculinity in British culture.

"Some of the old images and expressions of masculinity are disappearing from society. Most obviously the relationship between men and their work has undergone a revolution.

"A model of work built on physical endeavour is slowly being replaced by an emphasis on intellectual and emotional labour. Women are beginning to break through the glass ceiling, displacing men as the principal earners for the first time."

Mr Lammy writes that communities must provide male role models, and that National Lottery money should be devoted to youth services for boys. Businesses should be encouraged to offer mentors to young men, he adds.

Mr Lammy, a friend of Barack Obama, the Democratic Presidential candidate, writes that he supports comments recently made by Mr Obama and David Cameron, the Conservative leader, that absent black fathers must take greater responsibility for their children. Figures show that 59 per cent of black Caribbean children are brought up by a single parent.

However he insists that his comments apply to everyone. "I winced as another round of banner headlines tarred every father in the black community with the same brush," he writes.

"The questions that need to be answered for children of all races and social backgrounds are: what can we do when there is no father in a young man's life?"

Mr Lammy, who was brought up without a father, writes: "While there may be young men on estates missing fathers who left them, there are also children in Middle Britain whose parents become strangers in a culture of long working hours."

However, he admits the problems could be most acutely felt in areas blighted by poverty. "Young men from poor backgrounds feel they have least to lose," he writes.

Your link is a discouraging affirmation of my comment. With these types of influences, how are black males ever going to get the positive messages they need to break out of the cycle of irresponsible and criminal behavior?

Unfortunately the “Mac Daddy” phenomenon makes a victim of the father/boyfriend as well. The “irresponsibles” condemn themselves to a lifetime of poverty, petty crime and off-the-books menial employment. The moment any one of these guys decides to grow up, get a straight job and start building a real life, the child support bureaucracy pounces.

In her nineties book “When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost”, “hip-hop feminist” author Joan Morgan proposed a genuinely innovative solution: that Macdaddies might be relieved of financial responsibility for their illegitimate offspring in exchange for renouncing any legal claim over their disposition. As an example recall the heartbreaking case from a decade ago wherein Ms. Crackhead arranged for her kid’s adoption and then the father appeared out of nowhere to scotch the deal...

How long can you watch hard workers get penalized (taxed, sued, arrested for defending their property, etc) before the message comes through that only chumps work like donkeys to achieve.

How long can you watch crime go unpunished (and here I blame the familial culture as well as the whiny libs) and not figure out it’s a quick grab with low risk?

I see plenty of all ethnicities out there who have figured out the scam.

... how can it be possible that all these millions of black men are unable to support their babies, but millions of single black women somehow manage to do it?

Good one. Some are getting financial assistance, but by no means are they all.
