Chicago Tribune newsroom departures (Dinosaur Media DeathWatch™)
Poynter Online ^ | August 15, 2008 | Gerould W. Kern

From: Kern, Gerould W. Sent: Friday, August 15, 2008 1:02 PM To: zzCTC.ALLEDITORIAL Subject: Today's Chicago Tribune newsroom staff departures

To the staff:

Today is a difficult day in the Chicago Tribune newsroom as we are completing the second part of our reduction in force.

Colleagues who are leaving today gave many years of service to this newspaper and forged lasting friendships and associations here. Endings are never easy. We thank them for their dedication and contributions to the success of the Chicago Tribune over their careers. We wish them only the best in the future.

On July 25, Bob Gremillion announced that the company would be reducing costs in response to unprecedented revenue declines. While painful, these staff reductions are necessary to establish the foundation for a sustainable future.

These employees are eligible to receive an allocation to their cash balance account equal to one week's pay for each consecutive period of six months of service, with a minimum of six weeks and maximum of 52 weeks. They will also be eligible to receive benefits continuation based on 1 week for each consecutive period of six months of completed service, with a minimum of 3 months and maximum of 52 weeks. Outplacement assistance will be available.

With the departure of 80 individuals through today, the editorial staff of the Chicago Tribune stands at 480, the largest news organization in Chicago by a wide margin and one of the largest and most accomplished in the United States.

This staff will achieve extraordinary work in the future as it has in the past. In about six weeks, we will launch a fresh, new Chicago Tribune that is designed to satisfy reader needs as never before. We will accelerate our move to a 24-hour digital news operation as well as publishing the largest circulation daily newspaper in the Midwest. We remain resolute in our commitment to public service reporting that benefits our readers and our communities.

The future holds great promise, and we will focus fully on seizing the opportunities ahead. Next week, I will write more about our new direction.

Gerry

So what did all those people do who won’t be doing it anymore since someone else will be doing it .... did they really need them in the first place?

Zell reportedly told the newsroom at the LAT to write more articles. And one of his favorite columnists is Krauthammer. What does that tell you about who's on first?

And the Tribune newsroom is only 480 weenies full? How can that be a problem?

This Chicago Tribune accomplished a historic feat.
They requested and accomplished the opening of divorce records of Obama’s opponent for the U.S. congress and then revealed bed- type secrets.
The Tribune ever since stands firmly behind Obama in the expectation that such favor will have feedback.
