Chinese customs officials confiscated more than 300 Bibles on Sunday from four American Christians who arrived in a southwestern city with plans to distribute them, the group's leader said.

--snip--

"I heard that there's freedom of religion in China, so why is there a problem for us to bring Bibles?" Klein said. "We had over 300 copies and customs took all of them from us."

The freedoms are written in their constitution, but are enforced otherwise... Something we Americans should take to heart. Though ours come from the Creator, our elected government “representatives” try to usurp them at will.

Relgion is only free in China, if you keep all your religious thoughts to yourself.

Feedom of religion. Chicom style.

Now we know what the Tibetians, Uighirs, Mongolians, and other religius minorities have been facing over over the decades.

...I heard that there's freedom of religion in China...

I'd guess you heard wrong!

Why have so many fools in the US adopted the insane notion that the Chinese are our friends? Could this be a result of our ignorant, stupid, and negligent leaders giving China the "Most favored nation status"? Our citizens need to wake up the fact that we are governed by abject fools.

But, but everyone says China is a first world country.

That we should trade with them and support them because they have improved their religious freedoms and human rights records.

Isn't it more about the economy with China than friendship? The game has been, for quite a while now, engage the Chinese, and we'll see some changes. I guess that's just not working very well.

I wonder if this is the same group on a Christian radio station that was asking for donations to take bibles there during the Olympics.

Can someone please explain to me WHY Richard Nixon opened up this Commie hell hole to the rest of the world? It seems to me that we and the rest of the world would have been better off without them.

“It seems to me that we and the rest of the world would have been better off without them.”

Don’t say that to the current administration (or previous ones stretching back to his father and the Bent One).

There have indeed been some changes. China has a large manufacturing base, while ours has disappeared. We could once buy quality products, now we must by junk.

China is a nation that is many thousands of years old. How could our leaders be so naive to think our "baby country" would sway Chinese leadership, tradition, and animosity for foreigners? There is a simple answer. American leadership is stupid, irresponsible, and incompetent.

I was actually referring to changes in China with respect to human rights, not in terms of economic strength. You are right, they are better of economically, and our leaders who allowed it to happen are to blame.

The Chinese never gave any indication that they were interested in improving "human rights". I can't imagine why anyone was expecting them to do so. Besides, one can look at any point in their history, even current events prior to the Olympics, to verify that individuals don't rate particularly high in the scheme of things in China. The communist party has very explicit rules that mandate the elimination of superstitions and religions. This is not likely to change in the near future ... or in many years to come.

Why do four people need 300 hundred Bibles?

According to a friend who is working in China, foreigners can bring their own copy of a Bible into China, but they cannot bring multiple Bibles to distribute to Chinese citizens. Chinese citizens can buy a Bible that is in the Chinese language at the government sanctioned Three Self Church. The church also sells several books by American religious authors that have been translated into Chinese. I’m not sure if the Chinese Bible differs from an American Bible because I don’t know anybody that reads Chinese.

Christians who are working in China have to be very careful. They can generally worship as the please, but they cannot openly teach the Chinese about western religion. If are caught doing this, they will likely be sent home.

The Chinese government sanctioned the establishment of several western denominations for the Olympics, but these churches are only for foreigners. The Chinese cannot attend.
