LOS ANGELES (AFP) A prominent Los Angeles-based Muslim activist has been jailed for four years after pleading guilty to attempting to bribe a witness, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Najee Ali, who heads the community group Project Islamic HOPE (Helping Oppressed People Everywhere), was sentenced on Monday after he admitted an attempt to interfere with a witness in a court case involving his daughter.
A spokeswoman for Los Angeles County District Attorney said in normal circumstances Ali would have received a two-year sentence but saw his term doubled because he had a prior conviction for armed robbery in 1992.

I’m unable to confirm at this time if he is or is not a superdelegate for Obama.

MUCH more accurate...
Wow, interfering with a witness, armed robbery, felony hit and run? And he’s only going to be off the streets for 4 years?
I wonder how many losers he’ll convert to Islam while he’s in there.
And that’s only if Obama doesn’t pardon him...
His daughter was being very naughty..
la times excerpt
He was charged March 11 with attempting to intimidate and bribe a witness. But prosecutors later dismissed the intimidation charge.
Jasmin Eskew, Ali’s daughter, is awaiting trial on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of leaving the scene of an accident stemming from an incident in July 2007 involving her vehicle and a group of motorcyclists on the San Bernardino Freeway, Gibbons said.
Ali would have received two years in prison, but a prior robbery conviction in 1992 doubled his time to four years, Gibbons said. The judge also found that Ali had violated his probation in a 2004 case in which he was convicted of felony hit-and-run and perjury.
“Mr. Ali has still not paid $29,240 in restitution in that case,” Gibbons said.
Some of Ali’s fellow activists said Monday they were stunned by the news and the length of his sentence.

another piece from la times re: his background..
Black activists search for a constituency
Eddie Jones and Najee Ali aspire to be leaders but each lacks a power base. Some criticize them as self-promoters.

Ali, 44, has no other job. He splits his time between an apartment in Baldwin Hills and his home in Chicago, where he lives with his wife, the granddaughter of Nation of Islam founder Elijah Muhammad. His organization, Project Islamic Hope, is funded by private benefactors, he says. He has no car, and gets around on the bus or by hitching rides with friends.
Jones’ prominence seems to rest primarily on his role as president of the 3-year-old Los Angeles Civil Rights Assn. — a group that he admits has no membership roster, no website, no office. “This is not about my organization,” he says, in his signature soft monotone. “I’m doing the work and the work gets done. The only one I need credit from is God almighty.”
Wouldn't you love to see the list of those names?
