Denver cabbies fear being stiffed by delegates' vouchers (RATS DO NOT PAY THEIR FARE SHARE?)

Denver cabbies fear being stiffed by delegates' vouchers

The 5,000 delegates coming to Denver for the Democratic National Convention will each be getting $40 transportation vouchers.

But the vouchers may be worthless in the eyes of some taxi drivers.

City Councilman Michael Hancock said some taxi company owners are concerned that their drivers won't accept the vouchers out of fear that the Denver 2008 Host Committee won't reimburse them.

"We want to make sure that taxi drivers feel confident that they'll be taken care of ... and that we don't have uncomfortable taxi drivers out there," Hancock said Tuesday. "They don't make very good ambassadors."

Hancock revealed the taxi drivers' reservations about the voucher program during the final City Council briefing on the DNC.

"The city should not believe that the whole cab world is going to thumb their nose at the DNC host committee on this," he said. "I don't believe for a minute that it's more than 100 guys ... If those 100 guys don't take the vouchers, there's 900 others who will."

At a "celebrity car wash" for taxi drivers Tuesday, Alexander said every driver that he talked to said they were going to accept the vouchers.

Chris Lopez, spokesman for the local host committee which is responsible for raising the money to put on the DNC, said cabbies will be made whole.

"We will make good on every voucher," he said.

Mitchell, who helped bring the taxi companies together with the host committee, said he has no reason to believe that drivers wouldn't be reimbursed.

"These vouchers are almost like a credential," he said.

Why not? I do! (As does every other real American...)

It isn't very 'green' to have one driver and only one passenger. They really need to load up those cabs with as many smelly people as possible!

the dems are famous for stiffing people on the campaign trail. And they have hurt a lot of small business people - indeed, even put some out of business - with bills not paid.

The greatest predictor of future behavior is past behavior. The DNC has a history of not paying it's bills.

I recall a few such places with the Clinton campaign just the past year.

It sure is funny to see Democrats screw the people they claim to care about!

All the Dems have to do is arrange a letter of credit to cover the vouchers. But I suspect they won’t do that, because they’d have to have the funds available (or a good credit line) to back the LoC.

Definitely.

Besides, how's the counterfeit voucher market doing?

If they are not going to stiff the cab drivers then why not give each delegate 40 bucks. Then they could pay cash for their cab fare.

But the Democrats are asking for credit. If I were cab driver I would not take their vouchers. Cab drivers can’t go into a filling station and fill up their cabs tank and pay for it with vouchers.

I would tell the democrats to pay cash or walk.

Why not have the delgates pay the cab drivers and have the driver fill out a recipt form and then reimburse the delegates?

Perhaps democrats do not want to siff their own delegates. Cab drivers are another matter.

Because they know that the $40 would be spent on “herbal medicine” and prostitutes.

all the dems have to do is pay the cab fare then submit the vouchers to the DNC, why inconvenience the cabdrivers with fuel expenses and loss of income until the vouchers are reimbursed if ever.

Yeah...I heard that also. I'm just sayin'....If I was a Denver cabbie...I wouldn't take a voucher from this group...Not with how they have a record of shaftin' over landlords, caterers and other groups they do business with....but that just me.

Let chaos reign...heh heh heh.
