WASHINGTON - Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani will give the keynote address at the Republican National Convention next month and Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Lieberman also will take center stage at the GOP gathering.
John McCain's vanquished Republican primary rivals and a slew of potential McCain running mates also have speaking roles at the four-day gathering in St. Paul, Minn.
President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, first lady Laura Bush, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lieberman, who was the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000 and is said to be under consideration for the same role with McCain, will open the convention on Monday, Sept. 1, with speeches that focus on service.

GoPuke Party holds convention.
“Giuliani to give keynote at GOP convention”
Yes because he’s really representative of the G.O.P.
(God Zell Miller was better than Julie Annie)
Yep, it is completely a RINO party! Let the RINO’s have their fun without me.
For the life of me, I just don’t understand why people make a big deal out of who speaks at the convention.
Very interesting. I would have thought this guy had vanished from the face of the earth . . . he’s been completely out of the public eye for months.
Shouldn’t there be a “Barf Alert!” appended to the title?
I mean, I’m just asking...
Actually, I think Guiliani is an excellent choice for the Keynote. He is well liked by moderates, independants and even some democrats.
Three groups McCain will need in November.
Who does Obama have that can counter Guiliani and Lieberman?
Hagel? As McCain continues to do well, look for Hagel to try to return to the GOP party.
A good Lieberman speech could change the calculus of this election. Lieberman doesn't speak like Zell Miller, with the cadences of a Baptist preacher. When Zell speaks, his intensity can be scary if he is saying something inflammatory. Lieberman has this hangdog, aw-shucks manner of speaking that is disarming but which permits him to say the most inflammatory things without generating fear.
So imagine a speech in which Joe Lieberman indicts his old party, but not its rank-and-file members. It is a sorrowful, "The Democratic Party has lost its way," kind of speech. Imagine ending the speech with a series of inflammatory applause lines delivered in his aw-shucks manner. "The Democratic Party believes in fill-in-the blank, but not fill-in-the-other-blank." For example, "The Democratic Party believes in the United Nations, but not the United States." A good speech by a man leaving his old party -- because it left him first -- could turn into a genuine media event.
WGAS about Liebermann, I was talking about Julie Annie.
In fact, why do we care who we elect to represent us to pass laws and tax us?
Pro-Abortion Republican National Convention:
Joe Lieberman, Rudy Giuliani, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Laura Bush
Mayor Guiliani hates the UnAmerican Democrat Party, hope he rips them like he did in his speech last year....he threatened the State Dept Dims....saying the era of anti-Americanism must end!
Has there ever been someone who ascended as high as Lieberman (VP nominee) to defect and cross over so quick (just 8 years?)
Guilianni. Lieberman. Ah-nold.
When Rudy is the most conservative, you know the RINOs are in control.
I can’t believe the guy responsible for Harry Reid being Majority Leader is speaking at “our” convention.
Just another thing to hold against McCain, I suppose. Rudy is one of the top speakers the GOP has and has huge star power. Seems like the most logical choice. If he were the VP pick, I could understand people being spun up. But keynote speaker is the perfect role for Rudy.
I will have a pedicure scheduled for that night. Will have to see what else needs done for all the other nights....toilet bowl cleaning for sure.
You forgot pro-life George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, John McCain...
I don’t see Ted Stevens or Trent Lott on the agenda.
I think Giuliani will give a heckuva speech. And I’m quite happy to see him slotted for a prime speaking role, as that means he is now officially NOT a candidate for VPOTUS.
Most of McCain's other former primary rivals will speak, including former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, ex-Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who also is mentioned as a potential vice presidential candidates.
At least eight others whose names have been mentioned as potential running mates also are to address the convention, including governors Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, Charlie Crist of Florida, Sarah Palin of Alaska, Jon Huntsman of Utah, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana; former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge; Meg Whitman, the former chief executive and president of eBay, and Carly Fiorina, the former chairwoman and chief executive of Hewlett-Packard Co.
At least those guys don’t caucus with the Democrats in the Senate.
John Calhoun served as VP under both Jake Adams and Jackson, but again that was a different era.
John Tyler started out as a Democrat, switched to the Whigs to run with Harrison, and then upon becoming president began acting like a Democrat again. Henry Clay read him out of the party. His last public effort was to attempt to usurp Lincoln in hosting a peace conference right after the South seceded.
Both Martin van Buren and Millard Fillmore led minor party tickets years after their presidencies were finished.
Theodore Roosevelt attempted to come back to power as a Bull Moose.
It's a very small list.
Well said. And let's not forget that McCain is trying to highlight the gaping chasm between him and The One in experience in dealing with national security matters. Think that might have factored into this decision just a wee bit? :)
LOL, the Mayor has been campaigning for very conservative pols (since l998 here in my state).
Pro gun and pro life.
He soooo obviously is not an enemy.
What will he be wearing?
Just at the very moment the next generation hints at turning its back on abortion, the Republican Party wants to be “inclusive”. Excuse me if I puke on your shoes.
We still live in a dangerous world, and Rudy is one able to really articulate this. Also, this is interesting:
“It looks like the designated attacker on the issue of Obama’s foreign policy adviser going to Syria will be none other than Rudy Giuliani.
“As we reported below, the McCain campaign has been planning to make an issue out of a new report in the New York Sun saying that the adviser, Daniel Kurtzer, provided advice to the Syrian government last month. Now comes this release from the McCain campaign:
“Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign will hold a press conference call with former New York City Mayor, Rudy Giuliani and Randy Scheunemann, McCain 2008 Senior Foreign Policy Adviser to discuss reports that an Obama campaign Middle East adviser was recently in Damascus for meetings with Syrian officials.”
The reflex is to dismiss anything and anyone that does not subscribe 100% to conservative dogma.
We have no idea what Giuliani has to say but the obligatory posts of Rhino's schtupping Rhinos are posted.
You mean like you’re turning your back on the stunning array of pro-life speakers at the GOP convention? Heck, even going so far as to promote the aborters in your tagline!
I don’t think you’re concerned about pro-life policies or all the progress that’s been made in that regard these past 7 1/2 years. I think you’re just interested in making noise and throwing a fit.
Gonna add him to your tagline? How about Thompson? Huckabee? Pawlenty?
I think you are not a conservative.
Are there any conservatives to talk to on FR?
I take it running to the Boss is your way of admitting your got your buns kicked in a cyberdebate? LOL.
Note to self: Remove Donna from Christmas card list
I will be busy with my usual routine that night: getting drunk and cutting my own hair, then playing my ukulele.
By the time the bottle is empty I’m ready to hunt for a bull raccoon in the back yard who has been taunting me.
If you turned your TV on you might have noticed Rudy appearing on just about every channel on a regular basis.
Lieberman thinks it is okay to suck the brains out of babies being born.
Is that someone you want to listen to? Is that someone you want to represent you to the world?
Lieberman has such “good character” that partnered up with Algore!
Are there any limits to what you will accept?
That your liberal moral code back to the Democrat Party.
Perhaps you’re still busy dry heaving, so I’ll patiently wait for you to address my earlier questions. :-)
Unless of course I was correct and you really don’t give a hoot about pro-life concerns and just wanna throw a hissyfit.
Note to self: Remove Donna from Christmas card list
Thank goodness the Pro-Abortion Republican National Convention wasn't organized when Jesus was born.
You’re a liberal plant. Bug off.
Just a liberal plant trashing a conservative thread on FR.
So now a thread about Giuliani speaking at the GOP convention is a conservative thread? Well wonderful! So why are you being such a whiny !*@&)#$?
How about Jindal? Are you gonna include Bobby Jindal in your tagline?
I still love Rudy.
Anyone who attends the Pro-Abortion Republican National Convention organized by John McCain agrees that pro-abortion baby killers represent their beliefs.
They are the new Republican Party, covered with the blood of babies.
“He hates them so much he agrees with their postitions on the following: gays, global warming, abortion, taxes half the time”
He probably hates them because of their weak positions on foreign policy and national security. Probably because of what he experienced on 9/11 in NYC. Maybe he will talk up those subjects at the convention which are really important.
“For the life of me, I just don’t understand why people make a big deal out of who speaks at the convention.”
I’m mostly interested in listening to the speeches of the presidential nominee and the VP nominee.
Because people watch television.
