I think the 60+ MPG was for their diesel-hybrid prototype.
I read somewhere that the Rabbit was just temporary until they brought back the Golf with a new, high MPG diesel engine in like 2010. What have you heard?
the money you get back for the tax creidt can be used to pay for the repairs to the electrical system of your VW that will go on the fritz about 6 months after you buy it.
The engine will last longer. The engine isn't what usually wears out first on most cars, and VWs often have other reliability problems.
I wouldn't count on the longer engine life adding much actual value to the car.
Here is an old review of the diesel Lupo. Yesterday's technology was getting 78MPG, diesel.

The Lupo is no longer manufactured, and most were European cars anyway. Never imported to the U.S., as near as I can tell. I looked and looked, but did not ever find one for sale in the U.S.
Don’t worry, the VW dealers will just add an extra $1300 above sticker price.
(Can you tell I’m cynical about VW sales policies?)
Not much! I’ve even been pestering my local dealers and they don’t know much either. If I have to, I can wait until 2010, but I do want a subcompact TDI as my next commute car for obvious reasons.
But didn’t VW finally work out those early electrial problems?
The exact opposite is true, unless supply increases to surpass the increase in demand. This is fundamental economics.
I meant to say once the demand increases, the oil companies will produce more. Right now there is not enough demand for diesel to warrant an increase in supply and thus bring down the price.
honda makes sick motorcycles, too. hoping to get a new one in a season or two.
He owns it because he lives in Brownsville Texas and crosses the border for cheaper diesel.
The emission equipment required to meet the USEPA regs on these new diesels is very complex.
My bet is the long term repair costs will be high. Perhaps stunningly high.
The days of the simple bulletproof diesel for the NA market are gone.
He owns a 2009 TDI model?
