EDITORIAL:Obama Chooses Biden and the Battle for Life is Engaged
Catholic Online ^ | 8/23/08 | Deacon Keith Fournier

...what will soon become apparent is the Obama campaigns’ efforts to stem the steady loss of Catholic and Evangelical support based upon the candidates support for unrestricted abortion affirmed during the Saddleback Civil Forum. He had tried hard, through surrogates like Doug Kmiec and others, to present a softer side, an apparent opening to reconsidering the Democratic Parties’ obsession with the deprivation of human rights from children in the womb over the last two decades. ..

So, enter Joe Biden the Catholic. Joe Biden is a native of Scranton, Pennsylvania has Irish, blue collar, working-class roots which he will certainly attempt to bring to the campaign. He is a practicing Roman Catholic Christian. Along with his wife Jill, he attends St. Patrick Church, which is a part of the Diocese of Wilmington in Delaware. His careful discussion concerning all of the issues related to the deprivation of rights from children in the womb have been careful and strategic. ...He is a talented debater, a solid interviewee, a careful speaker on this issue. I believe that the Obama campaign is counting on this to stem the loss and attempt to reengage the efforts to attract Catholics and other orthodox Christians who simply will not accept any candidate who argues that an entire class of persons, children in the first home of the whole human race, can be summarily killed and that such an action should be called a “right”.

Joe Biden is also a member of that group of Catholics, from both major parties, who have come under unrelenting scrutiny from a growing and vocal part of the Catholic lay faithful. These Republicans and Democrats try to expound a “public/private” dichotomy on the fundamental human rights issue of our age, the Right to life from conception to natural death.

In choosing Senator Joe Biden, the Obama campaign has guaranteed that the Right to Life will continue to be a preeminent issue in the Presidential campaign of 2008.

If Biden is pro-abortion, then he certainly isn’t a Catholic. He may have been one growing up, but he isn’t one now.

I think Obama’s votes in the Illinois Senate on this issue has already made it a preeminent issue. That coupled with his remarks on the subject at Saddleback should be played again and again.

Biden’s pro-choice record is flawless—he has received an 100% rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America for three consecutive years, and his record prior to 2003 is also strongly pro-choice.

Another one of those catholics who thumbs his nose at Catholic teaching.

“If Biden is pro-abortion, then he certainly isn’t a Catholic. He may have been one growing up, but he isn’t one now.”

He’s a cino.
Just like the Kennedys - Pelosi - Daschle - Guliani - Pataki - and many many others.
We’ve seen his type before and the only catholics who will be fooled will be other cinos who would have voted Obama anyway.

Any catholic who was on the edge and concerned about this particular issue is not going to jump in for Obama over Biden.

Yes you are so sooo right. A Catholic cannot be for abortion. Period. Chances are he’s just another politco church-attender. There is no nuance or spinning allowed on the abortion issue or gay marriage. Life starts at conception and marriage is between a man and a woman.

The Catholic tag is treated as if it were a nationality or racial assignment instead of a religion.

Archbishop Charles Chaput’s new book “Render unto Caeser” is very clear regarding Catholic responsibility in the voting booth.
Biden has been very clear that his Catholic responsibility is not a priority.

He is a practicing Roman Catholic Christian.

How can he be a "practicing Roman Catholic Christian" and support abortion? True Christians don't support abortions and I didn't think Catholics did either.

One of my biggest disappointments in this election season is the defection of Doug Kmiec to Obamania. Kmiec is a legal scholar with (until now) good conservative credentials, and I used to have a lot of respect for him. He has completely sold out.

On another thread, a poster pointed out the following:

"We have Christians of every stripe, Catholic and protestant (Methodists, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Evangelical etc.) who consistently vote for pro-abortion politicians."

The following are my observations:

1) Perhaps they do not believe Psalm 139.

2) Perhaps they do not see that their own liberties, as individual citizens, are placed at risk when the liberty of the child in the womb to live is denied by force.

3) Perhaps they do not really think about the implications of the absurdity that one class of citizens (women) are legally protected in a so-called "right" to choose whether another human being lives or dies by the "hand of force."

4) Perhaps they never considered that the claim of the phrase, "endowed by their Creator," in the Founders' Declaration of Independence actually formed the founding principle underlying our Constitution's protections. That principle was succinctly capsulized by Thomas Jefferson: "The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time: the hand of force may destroy, but cannot disjoin them."

What clearer statement can be made on behalf of human liberty?

As late as 196l, John F. Kennedy summed up the same principle:

"The world is different now . . . And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forefathers fought are still at issue around the globe--the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God."

The "life" question for this election should be framed in such a manner that citizens can understand that our heritage of liberty has its basis in that very question, and that the "hand of force" may not necessarily be a totalitarian government's army, or even a terrorist attack.

“How can he be a “practicing Roman Catholic Christian” and support abortion?”

He’s not good at it yet? Still trying?

Biden certainly is a major pro-abort.

However Biden and the rest of the US Senate voted 98-0 in favor of the identical federal version of the Born Alive Protection Act that Obama killed in 2003 in IL.

Even NARAL didn’t object.

And this is the point that has to continue. Obama keeps spinning this trying to confuse and distract the WHY’s of his vote. But when Obama is contrasted against Biden and the unanimous US Senate his spin fails.

Obama supported infanticide.
