Laura Wilkinson has, among other things, an Olympic gold medal, a big ball of tape and a plan.
The gold medal, won eight years ago in Sydney, represents the competitive apex of her 15 years in diving, which came to a close Thursday night (Thursday morning CDT) with her ninth-place finish in the womens 10-meter platform final.
The tape ball represents the physical stresses of hurling her body off a three-story tower day after day, month after month, embodied by the miles of athletic tape Wilkinson, 30, has required over the last year to wrap her wrist and, during Thursdays event, her aching right triceps.

I found that most female divers were "attractive"...In case of Chinese divers, I only found one diver to be "attractive". Aussie and Canadian divers were "attractive"...
“Poor Finish sinks Wilkenson”.
You know, of course it’s true, and we are in athletics to win. But it has irritated me no end listening to the commentators diss all these athletes and their efforts constantly.
NBC has been really bad. I was yelling at the TV the other day, when one of our women got only third instead of gold. He kept saying stuff like, “She comes away with nothing”.
You know, 3rd in the world is not “nothing”. I’ll bet that guy can’t even make it around the block, the turd.
Why not a headline, “Wilkenson game even after injury” or such?
I agree, she was IN the Olympics. More than 99.9997% of us can say.
Good points....seems little appreciated that Wilkinson has been on three Olympic teams and has maintained world-class level in her sport for so long.
Praise for all our Olympians who participated in Beijing. All seemed to perform and conduct themselves with class...not cheating like the Chinese, throwing medals away, or drop-kicking a judge because you lost.
The last dive...It was so good that a Canadian male diver, in the stands, and Laura Wilkerson felt that they had to applaud...
I really felt bad when the 15-year old US diver failed to be in the final 10...She cried when the NBC lady interviewed her. I did see her Sunday night at the closing ceremony, having fun with other US team members.
