The Democrats Field a Liberal Dream Team
Wall Street Journal ^ | 25 August 2008 | FRED BARNES

Posted on 08/25/2008 7:44:14 AM PDT by shrinkermd

The real reason why an Obama-Biden ticket is a vulnerable one is that it plays into one of the few strengths that Republicans and John McCain have in the 2008 election. A weak economy, a surge in Democratic voter registration, an unpopular Republican president, a sour public mood, a desire for political change -- all those favor Mr. Obama and Democrats.

But what Mr. Obama has done is create an all-liberal ticket -- a very, very liberal one, at that -- in a nation whose electorate is still center-right. The political mood may be a bit more centrist today than it was in 2004, but it's still far more conservative than liberal. And liberal Democratic presidential tickets usually lose, as John Kerry did with John Edwards as his running mate in 2004.

...Democrats win the White House when they offer voters at least a small measure of ideological balance. Jimmy Carter, running as a centrist with conservative tendencies in 1976, picked liberal Walter Mondale as his vice president, and won. In 1992, Bill Clinton campaigned as a moderate and chose Al Gore, only slightly more liberal than Mr. Clinton at the time, and captured the White House. Mr. Gore won the popular vote in 2000 (but not the election) when he ran as a populist with a national security hawk, Joe Lieberman, as his running mate.

Messrs. Obama and Biden voted against confirmation of John Roberts and Sam Alito for the Supreme Court. They touted the Democratic talking point that remote Afghanistan was of more strategic importance than Iraq, located in the heart of the Middle East. They opposed the surge and refused to concede it worked in Iraq. ...

Bush may be an “unpopular” president but Congress is even MORE unpopular with a single digit approval rating. Go run two Democrat candidates from Congress, “yeaaarrrrrrgggghhhh!!!”.

In a time of war, the Democrats have picked a ticket with no military experience. Almost unheard of.

In a time of economic concern, the Democrats have picked a ticket which is further Left than Bernie Sanders -- the only self-declared Socialist in the US Senate.

It's a recipe for a massive GOP win.

Absolutely, but liberal socialists have only one thought -— POWER. You won’t hear of any great plans for America, except the radical, handwaving, socialistic crap that they don’t tell the Kool-Aid drinkers who is going to pay for it -— you will just hear attack after attack on Bush (as if he is running for President) and McCain. No, it will just be more of the same old liberal playbook crap enhanced by lots of rock music and mindless liberal entertainers.

A weak economy - By most historical economic measures-Disagree vehemently.

A surge in Democratic voter registration - More voter fraud.

An unpopular Republican president - Yeah, sure. Per the LeftPropagandaPolls

A sour public mood - Who says? Watch the media spin on the “public mood” change if the messiah is elected.

A desire for political change - More leftist mythology.

WSJ = Just another leftist rag.

“Senator, you are a windbag.”

That is an understatement. I met Biden a couple of times (in larger groups) as part of an overseas US Chamber of Commerce meeting. He was usually the leading Senator of any group of politicians that would visit.

Biden would give meandering, 25 minute introductions, use 20 minutes to ask a question, and God forbid he was asked a questions, he would give even longer answers. Our 1.5 hour Q&A events would turn into “listen to Joe Biden blather” sessions.

Watch him on his televised committee meetings - same thing.

They've finally managed to top George McGovern/Sargent Shriver...

And FDR/Henry Wallace (1940).

Joe Biden, as chairman of the Judiciary Committee, played a major role in defeating Robert Bork's confirmation to the Supreme Court (perhaps the most qualified nominee ever to be voted down), and he also voted against Clarence Thomas' confirmation. His pro-abortion credentials are beyond question.
