Catholic leaders react to Biden pick; Bishops say he should refrain from Communion
CNA ^ | August 25, 2008

Posted on 08/25/2008 1:47:04 PM PDT by NYer

Sen. Barack Obama / Sen. Joseph Biden

Denver, Aug 25, 2008 / 02:24 pm (CNA).- The selection of Sen. Joseph Biden as Barack Obama’s running mate is drawing a chorus of disapproval from Catholic intellectual and pro-life leaders because of Biden’s longstanding support for abortion. Most recently, Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver has said that Biden should refrain from Communion.

Over the weekend, CNA spoke with several prominent Catholics regarding Biden’s nomination for the Democratic vice-presidential slot.  The well-known Catholic intellectual and author George Weigel explained to CNA that Obama’s choice was expected. “Barack Obama is a pro-abortion radical, so there's nothing surprising about his choosing a pro-abortion running mate,” said Weigel.

According to Weigel, an Obama-Biden ticket is “deeply disturbing” because “neither Senator Obama nor Senator Biden seems to have taken Catholic arguments about the first principles of justice seriously.”

“The Church's pro-life position is not ‘sectarian;’ it can be engaged by anyone willing to work through a serious philosophical argument,” Weigel asserted. “Neither Obama nor Biden seems willing to do that -- which casts a rather large shadow over their claims to be the ticket of thoughtfulness and intellectual seriousness.”

Weigel predicts that the choice of Biden will present the public with the sight of  "‘Catholics for Obama’ tying themselves into even tighter theological pretzels, as they try to justify a vote for what seems likely to be the most radically pro-abortion ticket in American history.”

Deal Hudson, a Catholic political analyst, commented to CNA that the selection of Sen. Biden by Obama “has underscored his abortion extremism.”  On the other hand, the tapping of the senator from Delaware may have some positive implications for Obama as well, noted Hudson, who called him “an affable, veteran politician who is unlikely to repeat the 2004 mistakes of Sen. John Kerry by overselling his ‘Catholic’ credentials.”

Fr. Frank Pavone, the head of Priests for Life, took a broader view of Barack Obama’s vice presidential selection, calling it “a wake-up call to the Church (clergy and laity alike).”

Among the steps that the Church needs to take, said Fr. Pavone, are: to “improve the way we hand on the Faith, be willing to exercise the spiritual work of mercy of admonishing the sinner, and to keep politically active so that such people are voted out of office.”

Politicians, Fr. Pavone underscored, are engaged in publicly expressing “their support for keeping abortion legal” while at the same time consistently refusing to admit what abortion is.  He added, “if a politician cannot respect the life of a little baby, how is he supposed to respect yours and mine?”

Austin Ruse, the head of the Catholic Family & Human Rights Institute, reacted to the news of Sen. Biden’s selection by saying, “The Democrats are slapping faithful Catholics right in the face. First, they will nominate the most pro-abortion candidate in history. Then they refuse to invite the beloved Archbishop of Denver even to offer a prayer at their convention. And now they nominate a pro-abortion Catholic as vice-president. Only self-hating Catholics could vote for this ticket.”

The president of the national Catholic advocacy group Fidelis, Brian Burch, interpreted the Biden pick as having “re-opened a wound among American Catholics.” He added that, “the American bishops have made clear that Catholic political leaders must defend the dignity of every human person, including the unborn. Sadly, Joe Biden's tenure in the United States Senate has been marked by steadfast support for legal abortion."

Burch also highlighted the fact that, “Biden's own bishop, Bishop Michael Saltarelli of Wilmington, Del., has said that the issues pertaining to the sanctity of human life are the ‘great civil rights issues of this generation’.”

Bishop Saltarelli denounced the notion that politicians can 'personally oppose' abortion, but refuse to pass laws protecting the unborn. In fact, Bishop Saltarelli has made clear that pro-abortion Catholic politicians should refrain from receiving the Eucharist.

On Monday morning in Denver, where the Democratic National Convention is underway, Archbishop Charles Chaput told the Associated Press that because of support for abortion, Biden should refrain from taking Communion.

During his tenure in the senate, Joe Biden has voted numerous times in support of abortion and has characterized himself as a strong supporter of Roe v. Wade.

Biden also revealed at a Democratic presidential primary debate in Las Vegas last November that his criteria for selecting nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court would include a pro-Roe test.

“I would not appoint anyone who did not understand that Section 5 of the 14th Amendment and the Liberty Clause of the 14th Amendment provided a right to privacy,” Biden said.  “That's the question I'd ask them.  If that is answered correctly, that that is the case, then it answers the question, which means they would support Roe v. Wade."

Um, not to jump on the RC church, but why weren’t the pro-death people kicked out of the church long ago? Does the Pope mean what he says or not? (Note: the protestant churches don’t do such a hot job on church discipline either, but that doesn’t excuse anybody.)

As for a policitian saying they are personally opposed to abortion but allow for a pro-choice position, that is just plain creepy. The only reason to be pro-life is that you believe abortion is murder, so what these people are really saying is, “I personally oppose murder, but it’s OK if other people approve of or want to commit murder.”

Not to disparage, or to attempt to meddle...

but why don’t these bishops give them the “choice”:

denounce abortion or give up your church membership

The protestants have a problem with “church discipline” in that there is another protestant church down the street that will simply let them join without checking their background.

The Catholic (”universal”) Church shouldn’t have this problem.

I had to laugh when the MSM claimed on Saturday that Biden’s Catholicism was a big plus for the Obama ticket. So, dumb, they couldn’t even acknowledge that Biden’s pro-abortion stance would become a big negative for Catholics.

Has anyone rought up the fact that abortion is racist? The black population is 11%; yet 1/3 of all abortions are by black women. A whole generation of blacks - Jackie Robinsons, Thomas Sowells, Clarence Thomases, all destroyed. Blacks killing blacks.

The pro-aborts have a litmus test... they won’t consider approving a SC justice unless they are pro death (only for the unborn, not criminals). Yet they accuse us of having a litmus test. I hope every bishop in every diocese comes out strongly against these “Catholics”

You have hit on a good question. A favorite old priest of mine was once our diocesan exorcist. He favored giving communion to those who present themselves assuming that they are on a faith journey and God will eventually get through to them on all such issues. That their faith is a journey and kicking them out would leave them with no guidance or help. My only question is why that priest of Biden’s is proud of him, since Biden is such an obvious failure of his.

I wish I had the answer for you, I am for excommunicating them myself. Yes, I am a Catholic - a real practicing one! LOL

Someone better tell the monsignor at Bidens parish. He permitted him to take communion, although he admitted that he has spoken to him about the Churches teaching on abortion.

I cannot tell you how many Catholics at my church are democrats and proud of it. I had one parishener hound me by following me across the church to campaign for Hillary. I just told him we WERE IN CHURCH and I was not going to discuss politics. I did add a comment about her proabortion stance and history, which was NOT the position of the Catholic Church. His wife finally shushed him. We only occasionally speak these days. RME

One of the things we’re overlooking is that there is a difference between a private individual who needs work on his attitude to abortion and a public figure, a leader, who actually makes decisions on the issue, supports it, promotes it and passes laws permitting or encouraging it.

Perhaps the first person, the private individual, needs lots of preaching and lots of prayer, and obviously the priest cannot be expected to quiz every person who comes up for Communion. But it is a scandal for a known public figure, a politician whose self-proclaimed views and actions are known to everyone and known to be in conflict with the teachings of the Church, to be admitted to Communion.

I am hoping some bishop somewhere will have the courage to tell Biden that he may not go to Communion in his diocese. Biden’s bishop, Saratelli, is very forthright on the issue in genearl, but he told his priests that they were not to make the decision on withholding Communion. Maybe this means that he himself is going to forbid Biden to go to Communion, after a due warning to repent?

This is not just a test of Catholics voting (NOT) for the Obama-Biden ticket, but even moreso...

This is a test of the American Council of Bishops and how effective (NOT) they are going to be in the face of CLEAR Catholic teaching and this Pope’s strong psition on it.

In the end, I expect the Pope and the Bishop’s to fold their tent and allow Pelosi, Biden, Kerry, etc. to receive communion.

Meanwhile, Catholic Democrats continue to cherry pick and equate abortion (an intrinsic evil) with war and detah penalty (which the Catholic Church has made clear is not an INTRINSIC evil).

These politicians should go join the Anglicans (or Episcopalians) where they are soft on abortion, homosexuality, celibacy, etc...

I pray that that happens. I have no disagreement with anything you stated. It IS a sin to go to communion sullied with sin. Abortion is murder and thus a mortal sin. Biden obviously is not concerned.....his priest should be.

A Catholic in the public eye who not only facilitates baby butchery but vociferously proclaims baby butchery is perfectly compatible with Church teaching should have to publicly recant their stance on baby butchery and what the Church believes concerning that. It’s not just about the pro-baby butchery pol, but what the laity learn from how the hierarchy handles such situations.

A clarification:

Bishop Michael Angelo Saltarelli is the former Bishop of Wilmington (DE). Not to be confused with Bishop Arthur Joseph Serratelli, the current Bishop of Paterson (NJ).

Anyone who votes Democrat and thus supports abortion is excommunicating themselves unless they go to Confession, repent, and promise to amend their ways.

See the Catechism post above.
