Bishops Correct Speaker Nancy Pelosi: 'On the Separation of Sense and State'

By Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. and Bishop James D. Conley

8/25/2008

"Abortion kills an unborn, developing human life. It is always gravely evil, and so are the evasions employed to justify it."

DENVER, CO (Archdiocese of Denver) - The Bishops of the Archdiocese of Denver, Colorado, site of the Democratic convention, issued a letter directed to the faithful of the Archdiocese of Denver entitled "Separation of Sense and State: A Clarification for the People of the Church in Northern Colorado. We set forth this fine letter for the readers of Catholic Online in its entirety:

To Catholics of the Archdiocese of Denver:

Catholic public leaders inconvenienced by the abortion debate tend to take a hard line in talking about the "separation of Church and state." But their idea of separation often seems to work one way.

In fact, some officials also seem comfortable in the role of theologian. And that warrants some interest, not as a "political" issue, but as a matter of accuracy and justice.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is a gifted public servant of strong convictions and many professional skills. Regrettably, knowledge of Catholic history and teaching does not seem to be one of them.

...

Most Rev. Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.
+Archbishop of Denver

James D. Conley
+Auxiliary Bishop of Denver

but when it comes to the pedophile priest issue they're strangely silent.

You obviously know nothing about Chaput let alone the statements of numerous other Bishops regarding the issue. So rather than continue making a fool out of yourself, just shut the hell up, putz.

The following describes John the Baptist, who is still in his mother’s womb, leaping for joy at the presence of Jesus, who is still in his mother’s womb.

Luke 1:39-45

And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

They have not been strangely silent. If you don't know that already (and I wonder how you wouldn't know that having access to the Internet as you do), I suggest you use your Internet skills and search on comments by the good Archbishop and other bishops on the pedophile (really, homosexual) priest issue.

And by the way, you're not supposed to hi-jack a thread and bring up extraneous issues. Start your own thread if you want to discuss that issue.

Shame he won't right a book about getting rid of pedophile priests!

Pehaps he will, once you remove the beam from your eye.

A friendly word of advice.

FreeRepublic isn’t like any other forum. When you post a comment, be aware that there is bound to be several bona fide experts on the subject.

So if you bring up pedophile priests on a thread, you better know what you’re talking about, because you can bet there’s about 100 others who will.

Good luck! You’re gonna need it!

The Democrats'Univited Guest

The Democrats' uninvited guest Posted Aug. 19, 2008 11:53 AM || by Phil Lawler || category Commentary

When the leaders of the Democratic Party gather in Denver for their nominating convention, they'll hear from a number of prominent religious leaders. They'll hear from several prominent Catholics, too. But they won't hear from the Archbishop of Denver, points out Julia Duin of theWashington Times.

Archbishop Charles Chaput would be a very, very interesting convention speaker. He's intelligent, witty, modest, and thoughtful. He has taken a special interest in the relationship between religion and politics, as demonstrated by his new book, Render Unto Caesar.

But if you were a Democratic leader… if you were a supporter of Senator Obama… would you want to hand Archbishop Chaput the microphone? Nope. His message would not be congenial to the "pro-choice" crowd.

Ray Flynn, former Boston mayor and later US ambassador to the Vatican, tells the Washington Times that the failure to include Archbishop Chaput is "a serious oversight" on the part of Democratic Party leaders. Serious, yes. Oversight, no.

Five years ago the Roman Catholic Church took serious steps to prevent anyone from sexually abusing youth.

For example, in my parish, you have to go through a special training program to work with Youth. So not only is there strict rules for priests, there are also strict rules for the lay people.

When I lived in Atlanta, circa 2003-2004, a Hispanic priest just rested his hand on the shoulder of a 7th grade girl.

Hispanic people are very much into hugging and very outgoing.

He may not even realized what he did.

But the girl told her family that the priest "touched her" and did not describe what really happened.

When the truth came out, the priest had already been transferred to another parish, which was a shame.

The 7th grade girl was upset he was transferred and the family, once they knew the truth, saw no harm in what happened -- except that the priest was transferred.

So these issues are taken very seriously by the Roman Catholic Church, which rejects homosexuality and homosexual marriages -- which other supposed Christian Faiths do not...

What has happened in the past in rather unfortunate...

And I am sorry for the victims.

But I assure you that ALL ROMAN CATHOLIC DIOCESES in the United States have procedures to deal with predator priests...

If it happens again, then the church should defrock the priest and allow the priest to be convicted by civil authorities so he can be sent to jail...

As an Archbishop, he is not allowed to say that -- directly...

When Pope John Paul II was alive and a number bishops and the Cardinal of Los Angeles visited the Vatican, Pope John Paul II made it point to talk about pro-life values.

Why did Pope John Paul II do that?

Because the Cardinal from Los Angeles did not take a strong pro-life stance, and it was Pope John Paul's way of putting this Cardinal in the Catholic penalty box -- in a sort of sutle way...

Basically, the Cardinal acted one way, which was not in line with Church Teaching, and that was the subject Pope John Paul chose to speak about. As subtle as hitting someone over the head with a hammer -- by Vatican politics...

There are two reasons that Chaput did this in his diocese.

There was quite a ruckus about this same issue with Chaput in 2004 -- the NY Times misquoted him, then the NY Times had to give Chaput a column so that what he really said was corrected.

Then MSNBC and CNN got involved and walked away with black eyes (both networks).

This year the convention is in Denver, and on August 12, 2008, Archbishop Chaput released his book Render Unto Caesar ... Catholic Beliefs in Political Life

There were quite a few bishops, archbishops, and Cardinals that made statements during the 2004 election.

I think Chaput is doing this to get Catholics to read his book and bring attention to Catholics not to listen to political leaders about Catholic Church teaching but rather to Church Leaders...
