I think General David Petraeus would be a great choice for McCain's VP.

It would be the Heroes vs. the Zeroes.

He is doing the job he needs to do right now. I wouldn't want him to waste his talents babysitting the Senate.

He is needed and best suited to be the head of CENTCOM. He is was we need for winning the war; a true military leader.

Plus he has too much integrity for politics.

Well, lets see.....Petraeus is CENTCOM commander now. That is probably his dream job and he can’t run while in uniform. If picked my McCain, and assuming he accepted, he would have to get out of the Army at light speed. He would not leave until a successor was chosen, confirmed, and brought up to speed. That’s 2 months minimum—more like 3. If he were to try to get out before that happened (which I highly doubt), he would open himself up to all kinds of criticism. In short: it ain’t gonna happen.

Exactly. Military doesn't mean conservative. Even great military doesn't mean conservative. David Hackworth is a good example. Seems like a lot of military FReepers speak of him as a great leader but he was pretty liberal in his opposition to the war in Iraq.

While I am in awe of the man for what he has pulled off in Iraq, he has never run for office. He has not indicated whether or not he would like to soil his reputation by being a politician.

When was the last time any of these three was mentioned in a positive light around here?

The latest craze "Palin for VP!" and "Jindal for VP!"...two years' Governor experience each..haven't proved anything yet. Let them survive the forces aligned against them for a term, and let's see if they get reelected. That will help prove they have the toughness necessary to be a good president, and they're gonna need toughness in this ugly world.

Again, he has not indicated he would like to join the world of pathological lying, filth, and corruption. Why should he? He is a decent and incredibly strong and smart man. We don't get those kinds of people in politics any more.
