Russia warns Moldova against "Georgian mistake"

SOCHI, Russia (Reuters) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned ex-Soviet Moldova on Monday against repeating Georgia's mistake of trying to use force to seize back control of a breakaway region.

Russia sent peacekeepers to Moldova in the early 1990s to end a conflict between Chisinau and its breakaway Transdniestria region and is trying to mediate a deal between the two sides.

Transdniestria, one of a number of "frozen conflicts" on the territory of the former Soviet Union, mirrored the standoff between Georgia and its rebel regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia until they erupted in war earlier this month.

Russia sent troops to Georgia to crush Tbilisi's military push into South Ossetia and Moscow says Georgia has now lost the chance of ever re-integrating the breakaway provinces.

"After the Georgian leadership lost their marbles, as they say, all the problems got worse and a military conflict erupted," Medvedev told Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin.

"This is a serious warning, a warning to all," he added. "And I believe we should handle other existing conflicts in this context."

So how are the Russian's going to send in troops? The Ukrainians and Romanians don't care for them and both of them want to join NATO.

When Moldova enters EU, and the Union arrives at the Dneister River, the world is going to look a lot different to Transneister. They can sit in their isolation at the edge of Ukraine, cut off from Russia, or they can rejoin Moldova and in so doing EU and Europe.

Would that all the post-Soviet breakaway republics could make the same bids,
or support those desiring independence, simultaneously.

...too much to wish for?

If we don’t get Ukraine into NATO then its going to go the same route. This is really a warning to Ukraine.

“This is really a warning to Ukraine.”

My very first thought.

So how are the Russian's going to send in troops?

It is quite evident from the map, with river gunboats up the Danube, and those other rivers.

Transneister is a big reason Russia will continue to lob threats at Moldova. That little sliver of land is one of the most strategic pieces of real estate for the russian mob. Weapons manufacture and smuggling, human trafficking, drugs, child prostitution and pedo porn. You name it, they are involved in it.

Moldova should rejoin Romania — after all they ARE Romanians: ethnically, linguistically, culturally and historically until WWII when the Soviets took Moldova as Moldova SSR

Moldovans are mainly ethnic Romanians. The regions east of the Dniester are Russian speaking.
