100 protesters taken to temporary center
Denver Post ^ | 8-26-08 | The Denver Post

About 100 protesters were being processed early today at Denver's temporary processing center in a former warehouse.

Depending on their charges, they should be processed by 4 a.m. or 5 a.m., said Capt. Frank Gale of the Denver Sheriff's Office.

"It's working exactly the way it is supposed to do," Gale said of the facility.

If the detainees have the resources, they could post bond, Gale said. Others could end up being taken back to the main jail.

About 7 p.m. Monday, riot police using pepper spray forced a couple of hundred protesters out of Civic Center and then blocked them before they could reach the 16th Street Mall.

Police surrounded the protesters along 15th Street between Court Street and Cleveland Place and then moved up reinforcements, including at least two armored vehicles.

Lynn Kimbrough, a spokeswoman for the convention's Joint Information Center, said one officer fired pepper spray during the initial confrontation near the City and County Building and one officer fire pepper spray on 15th Street. She also said one officer fired pepper balls in once instance, but wasn't sure of the timing.

She said an officer fired the first spray when several of the protesters charged toward the police line, which had been set up to protect the roadway and prevent any movement toward the pedestrian mall.

It seems rocks and other weapons caused the police to act.

They should put a big ol’ pile of horse droppings right in the center of the detention area.

At least it’ll somewhat mask the stench of the protesters!

When I first heard the convention was going to be in Denver, I wasn’t looking forward to it. I’m glad I moved back to Oklahoma before I had to live through that mess.

My thoughts exactly. That probably smells 100 times worse than a Port-a-john outside of a Jets game in September.

Since when has protesting been illegal??? “Posting Bond?” There is criminal charges for protesting now? I have yet to see Code Pink, Cindy Shedevil, or that psycho “Preacher” from Kansas being arrested for protesting the Conservative Movements or gatherings.

The best news is that no one was injured yesterday. But let’s see what the rest of the convention week brings.

The problem is... They were going to arrest all protesters anyway. I believe the Mayor and Police Chief had already made a decree that there would be no protesting allowed, so they set up the Cage(holding cell). I do not condone the rock throwing, but they already had the mindset on arrest. That is the problem I have.

They should be gassed and when they wake up find themselves on Afghanistan’s plains. What is wrong with press gangs anyway?

DNC leadership doesn’t want anyone’s opinion, least of all protesters.

Exactly. When I was downtown yesterday, there were plenty of cops and a few protesters...and no trouble. A friend who walked through Civic Center Park after work said it was all peaceful around 6pm or so. The problems started when the protesters moved into the street to block traffic. As long as they stayed in the Civic Center, there were no problems.

The Recreate 68 and Tent State folks did not come to Denver to stand in a park and wave signs. They did not come here to march down the streets the city closed to allow them space. They came here specifically to cause disruption...which gets them the publicity they desperately crave. The tiny numbers they can muster to their cause are easily ignored when they conduct their protests peacefully...so they go out of their way to provoke a reaction...and gets them publicity.

And it works. Look at how much attention has been paid to the 1000 (or less) protesters. The media loves them and that is all that counts.

Just how did that Fox news team get it such deep trouble? I didn't see any police coming to their aid. I didn't see any police at all. I am not doubting you that the Police are doing a remarkable job, I'm just wondering how the Fox incident happened.

A couple of months ago I read that the City of Denver would designate an area for protesters to be in, which obviously would be away from all the DemocRATS, I didn’t think it would a warehouse (sarc).

It is in the Rats best interest to shut down any protest, because protestors enact everything the Rats are thinking.

Since when has protesting been illegal???

When it stops being a protest and becomes "direct action", aka violence.

Visit the middle of a riot, and you just might be assumed to be a rock-throwing clueless doofus...

Oh, I agree as I posted earlier. What irks me is that they already had that “arrest all protesters” mentality 3 weeks ago when they put up the “holding cell” in the parking garage. The Mayor and the Police Chief came out with a “No Protest” resolution.

Rock throwing and the like, needs to be dealt with swiftly and firmly with maximum charges brought, but they have been arresting average vocal protesters as well. Guess the shoe doesnt always fit when it comes time for the Libs to be protested against.... Just too much hypocrisy
