Bishops: Democratic VP Nominee Should Refrain from Communion
Catholic News Agency via Catholic Online ^ | August 26, 2008

On Monday morning in Denver, where the Democratic National Convention is underway, Archbishop Charles Chaput told the Associated Press that because of support for abortion, Biden should refrain from taking Communion.

DENVER (CNA) - The selection of Sen. Joseph Biden as Barack Obama’s running mate is drawing a chorus of disapproval from Catholic intellectual and pro-life leaders because of Biden’s longstanding support for abortion. Most recently, Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver has said that Biden should refrain from Communion.

Over the weekend, CNA spoke with several prominent Catholics regarding Biden’s nomination for the Democratic vice-presidential slot. The well-known Catholic intellectual and author George Weigel explained to CNA that Obama’s choice was expected. “Barack Obama is a pro-abortion radical, so there's nothing surprising about his choosing a pro-abortion running mate,” said Weigel.

According to Weigel, an Obama-Biden ticket is “deeply disturbing” because “neither Senator Obama nor Senator Biden seems to have taken Catholic arguments about the first principles of justice seriously.”

“The Church's pro-life position is not ‘sectarian;’ it can be engaged by anyone willing to work through a serious philosophical argument,” Weigel asserted. “Neither Obama nor Biden seems willing to do that -- which casts a rather large shadow over their claims to be the ticket of thoughtfulness and intellectual seriousness.”

Biden’s Embellishments Could Provide Easy Fodder for GOP By Bill Sammon
http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/08/23/bidens-embellishments-could-provide-easy-fodder-for-gop/#respond
FOXNews.com Saturday, August 23, 2008

“..Biden claimed to have once told a colleague: “Were we not senators, I’d rip your goddamn Adam’s apple out.” ..”

Here’s another “embellishment” and an admission:

“...And in a state that is overwhelmingly Christian, including over half a million Catholics, you’d think Biden would stay away from comments like, “If I’m the nominee, Republicans will be sorry. The next Republican that tells me I’m not religious, I’m going to shove my rosary beads down their throat.”

Biden, like many Catholic politicians, tries to separate his religion from his job. And as any Christian knows, this is not an option; if the two are in conflict, you have to renounce one or the other. ...

What he does find possible however, is to deny other basic precepts of the Code of Canon Law of his religion, such as unalterable opposition to abortion, euthanasia and same-sex marriage; the last of which he calls “inevitable.” ..

Pelosi says the church doesn’t define when life begins.

Pelosi is living in a fantasy dreamworld. She thinks she's the President, the Secretary of Defense, the Pope, and John the Baptist combined.

Sorry, but why is this coming now? All pro-abort Caths should be out of fellowship with the church regardless if they are on the world stage or not.

There is no such thing as a pro-abortion Catholic.

One can be pro-abortion or one can be Catholic. One cannot be both.

Archbishop Wuerl pointed out the Catechism of the Catholic Church is clear, and has been clear for 2,000 years. He cited Catechism language that reads, “Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception … Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law.”

This has been building within the Catholic Church for quite a while now. I think it has reached a flash point and the Pelosi comments combined with Biden has begun to set it off. I know in our parish there is none of the wishy-washiness that the MSM would lead you to believe there is.

They should condem the Obama's as well. Even though they aren't catholics. If they take communion in any other church it's still a unrepentant act and therefore injurious to their souls.

"Pelosi says the church doesn’t define when life begins.

That just goes to show what a fraud of a Catholic Pelosi is. The church fathers have always held that life begins with conception from the churches earliest days.

They are. That's why the pews are empty. It doesn't stop them from claiming to be Catholic from time to time however, pretending to be on moral high ground over one issue or another.

Next Sunday is Respect Life Sunday when a family from MHR (Tampa) places flowers at the base of the Holy Family. It is a moment which draws great love and devotion from our communicants. Our Lady of Guadalupe, Intercessor of the Unborn, pray for us.

Our Parish is the same way. There is NO gray area. Abortion is wrong period! Why do we celebrate the Immaculate Conception and not the Immaculate 2nd or 3rd trimester as Nancy would have everyone to believe? Because Catholics believe that life begins at conception. She is selling her soul for politics. Unfortunately for her, after she dies, there are no second chances.

“Pelosi is living in a fantasy dreamworld. She thinks she’s the President, the Secretary of Defense, the Pope, and John the Baptist combined.”

But most importantly, she is single handedly trying to save the planet.
I suppose this means she has supplanted God as well?

We have two Vigil Masses on Saturday, five on Sunday. Almost every one has people standing since the pews are pretty much filled up. This a a very large church too. Maybe in dying north east cities you find this, in the South that is not the case. Are you in charge of the moral high ground list?

huh?
first of all - the bishops can only address catholics. The other churches must take care of themselves.
This is related to catholic teaching regarding the eucharistic sacrifice - a teaching that is only shared by a handful of other denominations.

The Obama’s church does not share this teaching, so their receiving of communion in their own church is not an issue to be addressed by catholic bishops.

Maybe in your mind but in not my parish or Diocese for that matter.

The pews are not empty. They're filled with Catholics who believe what the Church teaches, and come to Mass to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus to help them live their faith.

Many of those Catholics who are enthusiastic Obama/Biden supporters may attend from time to time, but they know their views are wrong, but being Catholic is the only thing they know and they cling to it like it's some social club.

Oh, yes, the Church does define when life begins — at conception!
