The Russians don’t necessarily need Europe’s money. Oil is a fungible commodity. They could just as easily sell their petroleum to the oil-hungry Chinese.

true but you have to build new pipelines, oil tankers.... to do that. you cannot do this within a month or so. the same could be said about europe. europe does not stand or fall because of russian oil or gas. we could import more from other countries too if needed (the problem is most of them are lovely hellholes like iran). (shure this would take some time too). the big question is do both sides really want this? i´m not shure on this one. but i guess in the long time it would hurt russia more than it would hurt the EU for example. you don´t really want an economic war with EU GDP (purchasing power parity):
$14.38 trillion (2007 est.)
GDP (official exchange rate):
$16.62 trillion (2007 est.)

when your own russian gdp is only
GDP (purchasing power parity):
$2.088 trillion (2007 est.)
GDP (official exchange rate):
$1.286 trillion (2007 est.)

you would lose it the long way

Sadly the russians would just role over europe with its military if you all ever did that to them. The EU combined could not stop them. The US is the only ones that could help you then.
