Pawlenty cancels TV interviews
Star Tribune ^ | August 28th, 2008 – 2:23 PM | Mark Brunswick

A headline like that may seem inocuous enough, but amid the fevered speculation about whom John McCain will select as a vice presidential running mate, maybe it’s a tea leaf. Or maybe not.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, in Denver as an unofficial Republican observer during the Democratic National Convention, has canceled several TV interviews that were scheduled for this afternoon, said a Republican spokesman.

Pawlenty said his travel plans — he is scheduled to be at the Minnesota State Fair on Friday — remain unchanged.

The governor, of course, has long been said to be on McCain’s list of potential veep picks.

Reports have said McCain may attend a rally with his running mate Friday in Dayton, Ohio.

McCain really wants this to be a surprise. All of this stuff is a smokescreen. When asked about Veepstakes, Pawlenty said he was going to be at the Minnesota state fair on Friday, as direct a denial as he could get without saying it outright.

Still think it will be a surprise dark horse.

The Repubs are having fun with all this. Kuddos to McCain for fighting against this media lovefest for Obama. How else do you get any press?

I keep thinking maybe McCain team is better than we have given them credit for... and this is all a big ploy to capture the attention when he does make his VEEP. It has to go over better than the text message at 3:00 a.m.

By the way, the dims who wanted private phone calls etc to remain private are sure being sneaky about how they are getting cell phone numbers.

What the press won’t tell us, is he a good governor? What are his strengths and weakness at the state level.

Is he trusted? Has he done any “Arnolds” like our Republican out here. Arnolds are flip-flops or promising one thing and doing the opposite.

He is conservative about some things but knee deep in the global warming crap. But keep in mind he is governer in Minnesota, a very liberal state. He is very prolife. I have heard some Minnesotans say they don’t like him but its almost impossible to be a pol and liked in Minnesota. They do like their liberals however. So maybe thats good that Pawlenty has managed to get a bunch of libs to dislike him.

In my view he has done a good job as Gov here. He has had Dems controlling both the State house and senate and has managed to hold the line on new taxes while erasing around $4 Billion in deficit.

He signed our CCW law both times and comes off as an avid outdoors guy (he started our "Governor's Deer Opener" as an example)

On the environment, he is a bit of a "Globull Warmer" but I think that he will tone that down. One thing that burns me a lot about him was his pushing of ethanol, but that is/was a huge deal here in the upper midwest.

In my opinion he is a likable guy who can get things done and can play hard-ball to get what he wants.

I agree with your assessment of Pawlenty.

He pushed ethanol hard during his re-election campaign and I think he needed to back then because of the corn industry in the state. Since the folly of ethanol has become more widely known I think he will back off on it. I think he has been very effective considering the amount of control the DFL has over the state government.

Many comments on FR refer to him as being a boring and whiney speaker. I don't agree with this. They are forming their opinion on just one viewing or interview here or there. He doesn't pound on the desk when he speaks but he can be animated when needed.

Sorry I started responding to your post without reading the whole thing.

As far as any "Arnolds", all that comes to mind is he signed a "no new tax" pledge when he was first elected which he technically followed but he raised all sorts of fees.

An example: he assessed tobacco products with a "health impact fee" which I can hardly type with a straight face.
