Was It Effective Demagoguery, Or Ineffective?
Power Line ^ | August 28, 2008 | V.P. Buzz

Obama outlined, in the vaguest terms possible, countless billions or trillions of new federal spending. How would he pay for it? By "closing corporate loopholes"--like what? The idea that Obama's orgy of spending can be funded by "closing corporate loopholes" is frankly childish. By increasing taxes on the top 5% of taxpayers, i.e., precisely those who are grossly over-taxed already. The top 5% already pay 60% of all federal income taxes. And by "eliminating programs that no longer work." Really? Which ones? No one seriously imagines that Obama--let alone the Democratic Congress!--has any intention of eliminating any significant government programs.

A heaping plate of new government programs... nowhere did Obama say how to pay for them. And it contradicts his talk of cutting taxes and eliminating redundant and wasteful government programs. There's that hole in the donut of liberal philosophy... again!

ineffective; because he did not give America any credit at all for being the greatest country in the world, the only country everyone turns to when they’re in trouble, and for kicking the OTHER Hussein out of existence. Failing that, it was a bullshit speech, and everyone knows it.

For me, his speech was summed up with his claim that he was READY TO DEBATE MCCAIN.

I’ve heard that before and saw that his WORD did not translate to ACTIONS. But then, such WORDS are often used to manipulate crowds...

EXACTLY, EXACTLY, EXACTLY. I said this in another thread. Absolutely ineffective and I believe this is mostly true for independents that were looking for more and walked away disappointed.<p. It is a given we are cynical or even nervously looking even more so for the positive and that many of the true believers enjoyed watching him and hearing him talk their talk, but in the end, I do not think he hit it as far as he could have for any of us, especially those sitting on the fence. The Clinton women and independent moderates will go for the man with experience and a proven record to not take this country off course and into socialism.

I would take many trillions to pay for all of his programs. There’s not enough taxes to pay for them all.

Not a mention of keeping Islamofascism at bay. Yep, he talked about manifestations of it and mentioned terrorism, but only on a small scale and specific locations, not a the greater enemy. It's obvious that this guy "doesn't get it" when it comes to seeing the larger picture.

And did he mention anything about safe borders?

Don’t people understand that high corporate taxes are EXACTLY WHY AMERICAN CORPORATIONS ARE MOVING OFFSHORE?

Tax business any more and the rest of our economy and good paying jobs will leave also.

By "closing corporate loopholes"--like what?

Private property in the means of production. The workers control the means of production. They have nothing to lose but their chains...

You know the rest.

They are communists. They haven't had a new idea since 1848.

Did you get the feeling that he talked down at people? He seemed full of anger and the sunny optimism of Reagan - that's not him. The Republicans have an opportunity to put on a different picture next week - provided McCain doesn't pander to the so-called moderates and liberals out there.

I listened and did not watch. Without the visuals it seemed very disjointed at times, and just jumping from one thing to another without any connectivity.

It was just a fire hose of everything they wanted to hear.

He blew it with what line about experience though, he was talking about himself on national TV!

Pretty mediocre speech I thought. Definitely not his A game, and judging from his body language afterwards, he knew it.

BTW, I watched the coverage on PBS. When the speech was over and folks were coming up on stage for the final bow, one of the commentators — I think it was the chubby historian (I can’t remember his name) — had an open mic and was saying in hushed tones “Smile, smile, smile”. It was funny because that’s exactly what I was thinking at that moment - “you should be smiling, Barack”. Then the commentator said, in hushed tones again but this time obviously speaking to someone next to him, “I think Barack is thinking of his mother”. They were seeing the same thing I was seeing, which was that he looked a little down.

He says we "don't deter Iran by talking tough," so how, then, do we deter Iran? Obama offers no clue. Likewise with Georgia; "talking tough" won't stop the Russians. True enough; deterring the Russians requires military capability. Yet Obama has pledged to reduce our military capability. So how, exactly, are the Russians to be stopped?

“It would take many trillions to pay for all of his programs. There’s not enough taxes to pay for them all.”

That’s never stopped a socialist before. With the blessing and power of the Federal Reserve and the Treasury, he could inflate the money supply as much as he wanted in order to “pay” for his programs. When that spending inevitably results in a general rise in prices, he could give a speech on the evils of capitalism and the greed of corporations, and push for price controls. When those price controls inevitably result in shortages of goods, he could give another speech on the evils of capitalism and the greed of corporations (who will be accused of “sitting on supply”) and push for rationing.

From his standpoint, it’s a good thing that present tax revenues will not cover future government expenditures. It creates exactly the excuse he will need to control more of our lives and curtail more of our individual liberties.

Definitely not in their league. Not even in his own league IMO. I predict his flat speech tonight haunts him for the rest of his life. My perception seems to be an outlier though. But I did notice that Andrew McCarthy at NRO thought he delivered a clunker.

In the very strictest lexicographic sense, they aren't Communists, but rather Fascists. The classic Fascist does not believe in the proletariat owning the means of production, or even in the government owning them ''in trust'', as it were, for the proletariat.

The classic Fascist forces the entrepreneur to allow the gov't to **control** the means of production (and, conveniently, leave the cost of proper maintenance to the entrepreneur). Hitler, for one, was quite explicit about this:

''We do not care who may own a business or a factory; our socialism goes much, much deeper.''

Or, if you like, read Hitler's address to the NSDAP conclave at Nurnberg, 1 May 1927 for a more detailed picture.
