WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush said Friday he was excited by Republican White House hopeful John McCain's surprise choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.
"I applaud Senator McCain for selecting Governor Palin. This decision is yet another example of why the American people can trust him to make wise decisions and to confidently lead this country," Bush said in a statement.
"By selecting a working mother with a track record of getting things done, Senator McCain has once again demonstrated his commitment to reforming Washington," the US president said.
Bush telephoned Palin and "said that the McCain-Palin ticket is very strong, he wished her good luck, told her she will be a fantastic vice presidential candidate and that he is looking forward to a great victory," according to White House spokeswoman Dana Perino.
But the US president, whose second four-year term ends in January, hailed Palin as "a proven reformer who is a wise steward of taxpayer dollars and champion for accountability in government.
"Governor Palin's success is due to her dedication to principle and her roll-up-your-sleeves work ethic and serves as a wonderful example of the spirit of America," he said.

me too!
Then he would like my new tagline...
Good! I’m glad he’s expressing enthusiasm about this. I think he and McCain have not necessarily always been on the best of terms, so the pick might be good on that score, too.
Drill Here, Drill Now! Drill Offshore. Drill ANWR!
As opposed to Obama's success, which is due to his ability to work as a middleman who schmoozes with folks who want money and with folks who have money to give away.
Great move!
This should make some voters feel better about voting for the McCain ticket.
So the Democrats pair Obama with a Vice President candidate who is an old white guy, and the Republicans pair McCain with a Vice President candidate who is a young energetic woman.
Assuming McCain will win the election, the first female Vice President of the United States will be a Republican.
Again, I feel this is a great move!
The Democrats are going to be hopping mad...
I think Palin is a great choice. She’ll bring a fresh spirit to his campaign.
Good choice!
I like the choice too.
Palin will bring a fresh spirit to the campaign.
Good choice John!
Dana Perino is great....
I think it’s an inspired choice, and if the Demagogues want to argue about experience let’s just look at the FACT that Obambi has zero executive experience, that the Chicago Annenberg Challenge (with proud terrorist Bill Ayers) for which Obambi was the honorific “chairman” accomplished absolutely nothing while squandering $110 million, and that Governor Palin is the real all-American choice while Obambi/Biden spend their lives catering to the far left. Governor Plain at least has some real executive experience and a genuine track record of accomplishing reform.
btw, I saw that the execrable Rahm Emanuel issued a statement attacking John McCain’s judgment for the choice of Palin. This is too rich, a Clintonista WHORE who embraced the cesspool of Chicago politics wants to attack the the far superior ticket. The MSM will go all-out to help a-holes like Rahm, but I expect that over the next 8 weeks the contrast will become very clear for a sizable majority of Americans: elect the All-American reform ticket of of McCain/Palin or get stuck with the squalor of two far-left liars and hucksters.
Obambi/Biden should be spinning in flames before the debates even start, if there’s any sense in the country at all.
BTTT!!
I could not bring myself to put a McCain sticker on my car. However, I can get enthused about a McCain/Palin sticker.
What's more, I am in agreement with Berlin_Freeper: a successful McCain-Palin presidency should set the stage for the next generation of conservative Republicans. Little doubt in my mind that this would lead to Palin-Jindal, the first woman POTUS, too. (Wouldn't that just fry "Hillary!" By the '20s she'll be mumbling in her wheelchair down at the Old Folks Home about what "might have been".
