From Wasilla to the White House? [BBC On Sarah Palin]
BBC ^ | 08/30/08 | Alli Reed

Posted on 08/30/2008 2:07:43 AM PDT by BunnySlippers

Mr McCain's nomination of Mrs Palin, currently governor of Alaska, sent shockwaves through the US electorate.

For a moment on Friday morning US media pundits seemed stunned, scrambling to paint a picture of this virtually unknown newcomer to the national scene.

The governor of the largest and least densely-populated US state became the focus of the nation.

Even the Alaskan media was caught off-guard.

"I was in the middle of our morning newscast when the producers said in my ear that it was going to be her," said Matthew Simon, senior reporter at the CBS News affiliate in Anchorage, Alaska.

"I just said 'hold on to your seat folks, John McCain has chosen Governor Palin as his running mate.' Nobody seriously thought it would happen.

"It's just taken all of us in the state aback."

Whistleblower

Mrs Palin's meteoric rise has taken her from the city council of Wasilla, a commuter city outside of Anchorage, to mayor of the city, through the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation commission to the state governorship.

Along the way there was controversy, not least when in 2004 she resigned and subsequently filed formal ethical complaints against her former Republican commission colleagues on the oil and gas commission.

She was an effective whistleblower, bringing down Alaska Republican chairman Randy Ruedrich before defeating the governor who had appointed her, ousting Mr Murkowski on a platform of reform.

In Alaska's general election, she overcame initial public scepticism about her youth and relative inexperience to defeat Tony Knowles, who had previously served as Governor of Alaska from 1994-2002.

At CBS, Matthew Simon covered Mrs Palin's inauguration and first legislative session.

"Palin seems to have grown into the role [of governor]. In her first speech to the legislature, we all remarked at how nervous she seemed.

IBD had an interesting take concerning sparsly populated with immense natural resources. Ala Alaska, which as a state negotiated corporate dividends straight to state residences, thus circumventing the federal government, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Montana need to use their, ahem, collective clout to force utilization of their gas, oil, oil shale and coal deposits. They are all rather conservative states.

As commander of the National Guard of Alaska, Palin must be well aware of the Russian incursions into our airspace, a story largely unnoticed in the MSM. And the threat is real and growing.

LOL, that one will drive the PETA folks crazy. How many animals are on that wall? I count two bear, a long horned sheep, I think (on the left)...and several other skulls.

PETA is a communist organization that wants to control every aspect of our lives and what we think. The rightful owner of the responsible treatment of animals is the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The SPCA is doing the real work of caring for and protecting the rights of animals. PETA funding sources should be investigated.

You are right; it is a story the MSM is not paying attention to. Canada is quite upset and angry over this too.

Additionally, Norway and Sweden are also seeing Russians invading their airspace.

I couldn't find the article buttressing your assertion; but I know it's here at FR.

True! I'm sure lot of freepers will confirm that!

I was looking for one of my earliest Palin posts and found this one from April 22, 2008.
"From what I've read about her, she might make a great vp.
Good conservative principles.
And a good Mom to boot!"

Later in the thread, I note that she's "Republican.
She’s also anti gay marriage, a lifetime member of the NRA, and pro life."

McCain will not only get my vote now, but for having the political savvy to pick Palin, I will contribute to his campaign, something I could not bring myself to do before this.

I’ve been hooting for her for a while, thanks to you guys. Someone here told me about her and I checked her out. I was really hoping he’d pick her.
