Let Palin Be Palin (Why the left is scared to death...)
Weekly Standard ^ | 09/08/2008 | William Kristol

Posted on 08/31/2008 11:23:54 PM PDT by SolidWood

A spectre is haunting the liberal elites of New York and Washington--the spectre of a young, attractive, unapologetic conservatism, rising out of the American countryside, free of the taint (fair or unfair) of the Bush administration and the recent Republican Congress, able to invigorate a McCain administration and to govern beyond it.

That spectre has a name--Sarah Palin, the 44-year-old governor of Alaska chosen by John McCain on Friday to be his running mate. There she is: a working woman who's a proud wife and mother; a traditionalist in important matters who's broken through all kinds of barriers; a reformer who's a Republican; a challenger of a corrupt good-old-boy establishment who's a conservative; a successful woman whose life is unapologetically grounded in religious belief; a lady who's a leader.

So what we will see in the next days and weeks--what we have already seen in the hours after her nomination--is an effort by all the powers of the old liberalism, both in the Democratic party and the mainstream media, to exorcise this spectre. They will ridicule her and patronize her. They will distort her words and caricature her biography. They will appeal, sometimes explicitly, to anti-small town and anti-religious prejudice. All of this will be in the cause of trying to prevent the American people from arriving at their own judgment of Sarah Palin.

A spectre is haunting the liberal elites

Gotta love Kristol taking the line from Marx and turning it on the liberals...

We should be careful of a “Princess Di” effect developing where the charismatic junior partner completely overshadows the senior partner.

I’m pretty excited to see her speech and how she does in the debate. She is going to surprise people.

" unapologetic conservatism"

This is the key. She will have answers to any question.

Can she be as candid as Reagan?

Depending what happens in the years ahead, Sarah Palin might be a Republican presidential candidate. Hillary Clinton has considered it her birthright to be the first woman president. Maybe Sarah Palin is destined to break that glass ceiling instead. It’s possible in 2016 that Sarah Palin could be running against Hillary in the general election.

You figure that most women, or men for that matter, aren’t the hard core liberal/radical types. Many people will be inspired and admire Sarah. The same people who just couldn’t identify with Hillary Clinton, or want to see her as the first woman president, might just want to see someone like Sarah Palin become America’s first woman president someday.

The last thing the father of lies wants in government is a Christian who walks the walk. He has minions, but they can’t do any more than God lets them. And they’ll answer for every idle word...

Re: “Princess Di”, I believe McCain is contented enough with who he is that this will not be a problem. In a way, I have to believe that he will see himself as her mentor and will be happy for her successes - they make him look better. At least I’d like to think so.

I certainly hope you’re right, because there’ll only be ONE veep debate. I pray she knocks the arrogant Biden out of the court.

“All of this will be in the cause of trying to prevent the American people from arriving at their own judgment of Sarah Palin.” (from the original posting)

What I worry about is that, as usual, the “American people” will not arrive at their own judgment of her based on learning and knowledge, but just however the left’s ads and MSM portray her.

Really hope I’m wrong, because I believe she’s remarkable.

Well, that's something that Obami won't have to worry about with Biden.

I've seen a couple of recent videos of Biden and Obami. In the two I saw, Biden made some stupid remarks and Obami had a look n his face that made you wonder if he knew he made a big mistake picking Plugs as VP.

I for one cannot wait for Biden to debate Palin. Biden will come off boorish and petty. It's his nature.

Is it too much to make the analogy of Hillarys disaffected throngs and how we felt disaffected on the right as we believed McCain was going with a proabort. Sit it out or feel tepid at best. Not energized. The Hillary disaffected seem ready to bolt after being dissed. They seem to want to show Mr.Obama that the dems will not disregard them with impunity. I say welcome them back home to America and meet Mrs.Palin.

Hillary will be almost 70 in 2016. Hillary is done. She might have a shot in 2012, but I doubt she could even get the nomination.
