PALIN RUMORED to be preparing for RNC speech in Minnesota
Capital News 9 ^ | 9.01.08 | staff

Posted on 09/01/2008 1:41:16 PM PDT by rface

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- There's word from the McCain campaign that Alaska's Governor Sarah Palin is in the Twin Cities getting ready for her speech.

We spoke with the Chariman of "McCain for President" from New York State, Ed Cox, who said Governor Sarah Palin reminds him of Richard Nixon's fit on the republican ticket back in 1952. Although Palin has little foreign policy experience, Cox believes she'll be able to learn on the job.

"Like President Nixon, when he was Vice President, like Dwight Eisenhower, had not that much experience on the world. And he learned, as did Harry Truman. He made some of the best decisions that were made by any president of the United States when he ordered the Berlin airlift against the advice from all his advisors," Cox said.

So far, no public events have been scheduled for Governor Palin. She has been in the headlines though, after the McCain campaign released a statement from Palin and her husband Todd, saying their 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. The couple also says the unmarried teen plans to keep her baby and marry the baby's father.

God bless her!

This is an opportunity for the Republican Party to re-evaluate what they mean by the term “family values”. I hope the Barracuda urges her fellow Republicans to abandon their traditional “abstinence only” stance with its waste of hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer money, and instead get with real sex education programs for America’s teens that have proven results.

It is a weird annoucement. Obviously the Vice Presidential candidate would speak, unless the assurance is that the convention will go forward which has been somewhat in doubt. Awkwardly phrased.

No doubt her speech will trump McCain’s in notice. I’m not certain how many viewers it’ll draw, I’m guesssing quite a few. The real question won’t be viewership but the affect on polling numbers afterwards.

In my opinion, it is FAR more important for the President to have foreign policy experience than the VP.

As mentioned here, Truman had ZERO foreign policy experience when he assumed office (he had only been VP for a couple months and had been kept in the dark by FDR) and he is generally considered to be the second best president of the 20th Century.

Here is my take on every newly elected administration for the past century (reelections don't count because foreign policy is a given):

2000: Bush - No, Cheney - Yes
1992: Clinton - No, Gore - Yes
1988: Bush - Yes, Quayle - No
1980: Reagan - No, Bush - Yes
1976: Carter - No, Mondale - Yes
1968: Nixon - Yes, Agnew - No
1960: Kennedy - Some, Johnson - Yes
1952: Eisenhower - Yes, Nixon - No
1932: FDR - Yes (as Asst Sec. of the Navy), Garner - Yes
1928: Hoover - No, Curtis - Yes
1920: Harding - No, Coolidge - No
1912: Wilson - No, Marshall - No
1908: Taft - Yes, Sherman - No
Note: Long term and senior members of Congress and the Senate are assumed to have foreign policy experience.

So, McCain and Palin are every bit as experienced as all but three new administrations in the past century, the only ones that have more would be Bush 41 and Nixon because they had both served two terms as vice president and FDR.

Are you kidding me? I wouldn't be surprised to see Super Bowl numbers for Sarah. Not only is the GOP base energized but the rest of the country is now curious about her due to all the rumors spread by the left-wing media and now the fact that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. Most of "Oprah-America" lap this stuff up and by the time this week is over, a good part of Oprah nation will actually switch over to McCain/Palin after they hear her.

Which would certainly bum Oprah out.

Proven results - like a million abortions a year, chlamydia and HPV in epidemic proportions, middle school students engaging in oral sex on the school bus... Those kind of results?

Pro’ly they have a bunch of newsies there, suddenly with little to do and they’re reporting anything just out of boredom. They also probably had some juicy pregnancy stories ready to go and Obama blew the timeout whistle. They had to have something, anything! [cried the editor] to fill the space!

Obama got where he is because he gave one good speech. If any of the speeches she has given since the announcement as the VP choice, she will make Obama look like a freshman in a high school debate class. She is completely at ease, confident and direct. She doesn’t read a speech, as McCain and Biden do, and she isn’t putting on an acting job with the teleprompter as does Obama.
She is a real asset to the ticket — McCain made the right choice - and after Wednesday the whole country, except the die-hard libs will know it!
This Political problem with her daughter’s pregnancy will pass - clear thinking people will realize that this a a problem a lot of families cope with - and the way she and her husband have handled it - at least in public - says a lot about what kind of people they are !! My hat’s off to her... and my vote will follow!

Governors acquire plenty of foreign policy experience, especially from large states that have plenty of business abroad or are seeking foreign investment. I was in Jakarta when Reagan visited as Governor of California. He met with Indonesian government officials, received briefings from the Embassy, and addressed the local American Chamber of Commerce.

There are a number of consulates in Alaska from countries like Japan, Mexico, Finland, Norwary, Korea, etc. In 2007 there was an International Whaling Commission conference in Alaska that had over 70 countries represented. Palin spoke to the group. Palin also visited the Alaska National Guard troops in Kuwait.

The scandals keep coming. First, that her husband had a DUI when he was 22 years old. Then, that her unmarried daughter is pregnant. Last and worst, that she’s going to prepare her speech ahead of time instead of speaking extemporaneously.

Senators and Congressmen don’t have “high-level” foreign policy experience. They are more knowledgeable about the details due to the oversight responsibility they have, but the Executive Branch formulates and implements foreign policy.

I sure as hell never needed a “sex education program.” I don't think anyone I knew did, either. The education needed is in knowing right and wrong and appreciating the need to be responsible for oneself. Parents can help their children learn these things. Private schools can provide guidance too. Public schools are generally handicapped in this area. I expect that having a course surveying the details of anatomy and STD’s is more likely to give kids a false sense that they know enough and that whatever choices they make are then well-informed.
It's a nanny-state idea that naively discounts traditional common sense.

If you look at my list (except for Gore and JFK, both of whom I probably gave too much credit to), the senators and congressmen I listed as having foreign policy experience were senior members who held long term positions on armed services or foreign relations committees, or positions such as speaker of the house or majority leader.

While you are completely correct that the executive branch formulates and implements foreign policy, the implementation is virtually impossible without the cooperation of Congress.
