He's a superhunky bad-boy ice hockey player from cold country; she's a chestnut-haired beauty and popular high school senior.

Soon the all-American teen twosome will make GOP vice presidential pick and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin a grandma at age 44, just in time for Christmas.

I'm not gay but, well he's a hunk (I didn't say that and will fight to the death anybody who says I did).

My Grandmother and Grandfather on my mothers side were only 17 and 17 when they got married, only death separated them in their 90’s

Sounds like Congressional Hearings are in order.

Never thought I’d witness this kind of thread on FR. Unmarried teens having unprotected sex with a pregnancy as a consequence is now something to be cheered and celebrated?

Besides his hard play on the ice, Levi Johnston was also a bit of hell-raiser off it - another reason Bristol may have been smitten.

Some hell-raiser, that Levi. Fishing out of season. Just imagine that!

Hope things work out for them. It won't be easy.

I agree.

Very cute.

And the antics of the daughter have nothing to do with whether she'd be a good VP.

Or the antics of the Bush daughters or Amy Carter or Reagan's kids. Or Chelsea Clinton.

I hope people see it for what it is.

They remind me of the high school juniors and seniors here in small town Abbeville, SC. Fly over country and middle class America will relate to this situation more than the the left wing losers will ever know. The McCain/Palin support is going to go through the roof as folks sympathize with the Palin’s plight and anger boils over at the MSM.

Well not exactly cheered and celebrated, but at least she didn't abort the kid, is living up to the consequences and marrying the father, I'll celebrate that any day.

Okay, with these stories it is apparent that the parents knew before the pick, and thus McCain knew and picked her anyway. I had figured that was unlikely.

So it looks like McCain picked her anyway knowing this would come. I have to say that most politicians would not do that. Heck I wouldn't have done that. I have to give him credit on being politically gutsy in this decision.

I have certainly not been a McCain fan but that is a kind of Reagan decision.

Similar story here but, my Grandmother was 15 and my Grandfather 17 when they married. They were married 60 years until my Grandfather's death.

We are talking about this story, and yes, some are happy they are keeping the baby and getting married. That deserves some praise.

How, precisely, do you think people should react? I don't see anyone yelling 'Way to go, Levi!'.

It is too late to keep them from getting pregnant. It would benefit no one to condemn them. And a baby should always be celebrated.

You’re not going to get much support here with comments like that.

American culture has become a cesspool. We can only take it back little by little. Celebrate the fact that in this cesspool Bristol is marrying the father and keeping her child.

That’s a MAJOR step - outside of your personal household, that is...

So she fell for the star athlete at her high school.

Yes, the result is not ideal, but it’s not exactly uncommon. As for how this is relevant to a presidential campaign, it’s not. Other than it will probably make the Governor a sympathetic figure.

Anyways, it’s apparent that the media is ticked that it didn’t see this pick coming and is not trying to make McCain pay for pulling a surprise on them.

And I will say this...if you suddenly became famous and had the media looking into their background they could probably find something nefarious sounding. Especially if the media found someone that had a bone to pick with you back in the day. Jealousy is not uncommon in any community, especially in small towns.

This media witch hunt is getting sicker by the minute. Now the NY Daily News and the Chicago Tribune are invading the privacy of not only Bristol Palin, but her boyfriend, his parents, his coach, his friends and their parents. These outrages need to be stuffed straight down Barack Obama’s throat.

Stuff happens.

Young people loving too soon is not a new problem. Check your family tree. You sure there are no 7 lb premies? I prefer not to judge but use to use these two young people as a teaching example. You make a baby..you marry the mother and you raise your family. (I had all boys. Needs a little tweaking for my grand daughter:’)

I haven't seen anyone celebrating the situation, but, such things occur as a fact of life! Statistically, young marriages fail at a greater frequency than older marriages but, whether marriages endure is far more dependent upon the commitment of the parties. Plus, the statistics are faulty in that prior "hook-ups" and "shack-ups" are not revealed.

It has become commonplace in recent decades to just "shack up" and euphemistically claim to be "engaged" for the duration of the attraction (regardless of whether children are involved!))
