Former Rep. Barr Questions Palin’s Qualifications
Congress. Quartery ^ | 9/3/08 | Joe Schatz

At a Republican convention that appears full of Sarah Palin fans, at least one prominent conservative doubts out loud that the Alaska governor is qualified to be John McCain ’s running mate.

But that lonely skeptic is not a Republican anymore.

Former Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia, who accepted the Libertarian Party’s presidential nomination in May, is in St. Paul making the rounds with the media and chatting with old friends like former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Texas and former House Republican Conference Chairman J.C. Watts of Oklahoma.

Barr, 59, is perhaps best known for his role in the House impeachment of former President Bill Clinton in 1998. After serving in the House from 1995 to 2003, Barr left the GOP in 2006.

Barr said reports of a “cursory vetting process” for Palin “raise questions about the way McCain reached his decision.”

Noting that McCain is 72, Barr said he wonders whether Palin “has the experience – not just the superficial experience – to really size up” foreign policy issues.

Barr pointed to what he termed President Bush’s foreign policy inexperience when he took office, saying that Bush had a “very serious misinterpretation of Vladimir Putin when he first met him.” Bush famously said that he was able to “get a sense of his soul” when he met Russia’s then-president, who is now prime minister.

“It’s not something you gain by serving as mayor for a couple of years, or as governor for a couple of years,” Barr said.

As most folks know I'm not a Plain booster nor a Palin hater. She's a decent pick from my perspective, but a great one from McCain's perspective, because she has rallied the base like most of the other milquetoasts he was considering could not have done.

But having this has-been, conservative turned liberal hack question her credentials is more than amusing. The same guy who just last month praised the work of Algore on "climate change"?

If he were a "prominent conservative", he'd be at the Republican convention participating.

True, she has never worked for the ACLU, so by his standards, she’s not qualified.

Why are the Democrats so obsessed with the way Palin was vetted?
McCain could have put an ad in the local newspaper or held auditions like American Idol. It doesn't matter.
It is solely McCain's choice and his alone.
Maybe the media is upset because they weren't consulted?

And what qualifications does Barr have to be President? How anyone working for the ACLU can call themself a conservative is beyond me.

Any more questions on whether Barr is simply intent on destroying the GOP?

Geez, stooping to the point of using the DNC's talking points is lower than even I expected from Barr.

Bob Barr died. This entity is not Bob Barr...lol.

Seriously, he was one of my favorites up to very recently. Very solid conservative. And then he went nuts.

I think these unfortunate turns involve an interplay with the media - an otherwise excellent conservative dips one foot into the pool of leftism and gets rewarded by the media. Rebuke of conservative colleagues (warranted or not) meets with additional media adoration, prime interviews, etc. The media rewards what it likes in order to extract more of it.

The SOB sold his soul for a few minutes of TV facetime, a few invites to parties, and a sense of political accomplishment. I could easily respect Barr if he simply joined the LP as nominee and tried to turn it to the RIGHT on a score of issues. Instead, he, in conjunction with the MSM, allowed himself to be led toward the moderate-libertarian orthodoxy of the LP.

To run an effective campaign third parties need to tell me why they are better than both John McCain and Barack Obama.. So far the third parties have been attacking John McCain..

Who says it's just Republicans?

If McCain's campaign had known about some of these things they could have had a better PR strategy ready. As it is they look off balance.

Bristol's situation is a great example. They could have acknowledged Levi was her husband or fiance and they are expecting in the original press backgrounder. Low key and up front. Instead they wait to dump it out there in response to another bizarre rumor.

We should criticize the campaign when they screw up or they will keep doing it. Bristol's situation has caused unnecessary personal as well as political pain.

Yesterdays buzzword “vetted” was a way to say that she was chosen quickly, as a political pick, to get Clinton backers and that McCain isn’t a Maverick, he’s just another pandering politician. (and maybe that he’s crazy and surrounded by lightweights)
They know that Obama is not qualified to lick McCains boots so they have to belittle his choice. They really dont give a crap if she was vetted at all.

This has nothing to do with the McCain campaign.

The drive-by's are in full panic mode because the Dims came out of Denver still divided, with little or no bounce from a lackluster Sermon On The Fifty Yard Line.

Palin was a brilliant pick that exposes the Dims' divisions because many PUMA's are furious the Obamessiah flipped Hillary the bird and didn't put her on the ticket.

They know Palin united the Republicans behind McCain the way no other pick could have and their only chance to salvage the election is to try to bury the ticket right now. Just the same way Rommel knew if he couldn't stop the Normandy invasion on the beaches, he'd never stop us. And he didn't.

The allies took the initiative against the axis.

Who wouldn't have guess this would be an issue. The campaign waited to respond to an attack and is now on the defensive.

That has nothing to do with Palin not being the best choice for VP.

Bears repeating. You summed up my thoughts perfectly. I own an autographed copy of "The Meeting of Is" by Bob Barr, and this loudmouth losertarian on the campaign trail bears no resemblance to the conservative patriot Bob Barr from a decade ago. Barr's fans on FR keep trying to pretend it's the old Barr. Interesting how they constantly harp on McCain for "betraying" conservatives but turn a blind eye to Barr selling out of a whole host of important culture war issues, from the WOT to gay marriage to Gorebull warming. There's nothing remotely conservative or even libertarian about some of Barr's newfound talking points, just plain liberal. Barr has now managed to place himself to the LEFT of McCain on the core conservative values of pro-life, pro-family, and pro-WOT.

Palin is more qualified than Woodrow Wilson was and is an excellent choice for libertarian-minded conservatives. The fact Barr denounces her is probably because he just realized his November vote share has gone from 2% to 0.2% with her on the ticket. She's certainly eons about Barr's running mate, Wayne Allyn Root, in having a proven record and being ready to lead.

Losing his Congressional seat seems to have really drove Barr off the deep end. Any chance at a "comeback" are now ruined his suicidal Presidential run.

“The Republican convention is full of Sarah Palin fans, but at least one prominent EX-conservative doubts out loud that the Alaska governor is qualified to be John McCain ’s running mate.”

” Many PUMA’s are furious the Obamessiah flipped Hillary the bird and didn’t put her on the ticket.”

You are so right on this. The incident happened in a speech by Obama when, in a reference to Hillary, he used his right hand bird finger to rub his nose...then did the same in his explanation of the gesture...His audience laughed at the gesture and then Nobama smiled.

Bob Barr is a littleman. And in the same way I use ‘little’, Sarah Palin is a bigwoman. She is accomplished, competent, conservative, beautiful, womanly, moptherly, and a winner. It’s not surprising a littleman like Bob ‘ACLU’ Barr cannot appreciate such a woman as Sarah Palin.

The Slimes did a shockingly honest story Sunday of continued disaffection in the Hillary ranks.

Nobama was losing primaries to the end, never closing the sale with his own party. Bottom line is McCain made the pick he needed to unify his party and the empty suit did not.
