Nancy Pelosi: Misandry A-Go-Go
Renew America ^ | September 5, 2008 | Carey Roberts

As House Republicans stayed behind in Washington DC to debate solutions to the nation's energy crisis, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was out on the TV circuit last month, talking up her recent book, Know Your Power: A Message to America's Daughters.

As a mother of five and current Speaker of House, Nancy Pelosi has good reason to be a proud. But this preachy tome is unlikely to bring many voters into the Democratic fold this coming November.

Know Your Power consists of an odd brew of perky girl-talk, partisan posturing, and women's-libber agitations. The book's 174 pages projects all the intellectual firepower of a Golden Girls re-run. Pelosi's rather pedestrian take-home message can be summed up in a single sentence: "I consider my involvement in politics as an extension of my role as a mom."

The book contains some rather obvious omissions and contradictions. For example, Pelosi dwells on her Catholic faith, but never attempts to reconcile that with her principled support for abortion on demand. In fact, the A-word never appears in the book.

And she proclaims "my flagship issue has been energy security," while adamantly refusing to allow a vote on the House floor for a bill that would permit more drilling.

In places the book revels in bipartisan happy-talk ("I came to Congress to build bridges, not burn them"). Then she shows her other side. Describing a meeting she had with President Bush to discuss the Katrina flooding, she hisses, "This President is in denial. He is therefore dangerous."

If you're ready for a good belly laugh, consider this straight-faced claim on page 85: "San Franciscans lead the way in caring about our families...Much of this is thanks to the leadership of Mayor Gavin Newsom." Mr. Newsom, we should note, has been caught up in recurring scandals, including his 2007 admission of a romantic liaison with the wife of his campaign manager.

The book's title betrays Pelosi's passion for power. Indeed, Pelosi often comes across like a 1960s student radical: "It is time for a disruption," she proclaims about American health care.

At times she lapses into a schoolgirl tantrum. Despondent that 50% of American lawmakers aren't female, she shreaks, "We want more — in the United States and the world!"

Part of Mrs. Pelosi's message is that even the most powerful female politician in the land is allowed to play the victim. At one point she recalls the weekly dinners with other members of Congress with this plaintive comment: "The men never turned and asked, 'What do you think?' Never."

So there you have it — the don't-speak-unless-you-are-called-upon rule even applies to the Speaker of the House!

Most disturbing is Pelosi's disparaging remarks about members of the opposite sex. Yes, she does acknowledge the support of her father and husband. But beyond her family and close political allies, and her girl-power manifesto lapses into misandry and contempt.

She begins with this hubris-filled pronouncement: "By electing a woman Speaker, my colleagues turned the old system upside down."

Next the Speaker resorts to condescension. "I didn't come to Congress to change the attitudes of men," she self-righteously declares on page 139.

Then San Fran Nan recounts a discussion with several male congressmen about childbirth, concluding the men "didn't have a clue."

Now just imagine former House Speaker Dennis Hastert, previously a high school athletic coach, having a sporting conversation with female lawmakers. Let's say the ladies didn't know the difference between a nickel defense, pulling guard, and a quarterback sneak. So I guess Hastert would have been justified in calling these women "clueless"?

Having established the moral supremacy of her gender, Pelosi feels justified in issuing this chauvinistic rant: "I couldn't help think about how women were especially blessed with heightened intuition to decide or to advise."

That's one heck of a statement, Nancy. Maybe Hillary should have read your book before her ill-fated campaign went bust.

Editor Kathyrn Jean Lopez sizes up Know Your Power this way: "Stuck on the history she's made, Nancy Pelosi, instead of being the trailblazer of her imagination, actually has shown herself to be an uninspiring and confused leader."

Nancy Pelosi's self-absorbed message really boils down to this: It's perfectly fine to gloss over the contradictions, stereotype men as doofuses, and relentlessly play the victim.

Let's say it just comes with the territory.

This review never mentions Palin, but such a contrast needs to be made. Nancy Pelosi wrote a book emphasizing the need for more women in positions of power. She emphasizes the unique abilities that women have and that men do not. She criticizes the old boy network which keeps women in their place.

Along comes Sarah Palin -- the answer to Nancy's dreams -- and what happens? Nancy attacks and tries to destroy her.

You bought or read the book? You must be one of the four thousand.

Nancy Pelosi as a role model? Now that is a real laugh! Anybody watching the RNC Wednesday night got the perfect picture of an American role model. Not perfect, but damn near!

trash and drivel not worth the paper it is printed on.

The 4,000 copies bought so far is the obligatory ones the libraries do as a matter of course.

No interest in Nancy's book. I was commenting on the review of the book posted here.

Possibly this review was written a week ago and is only now seeing print. That would be a reasonable excuse. But it caught my eye that a Nancy's book is being reviewed on Sept 5 (a few days after Palin's speech) and the reviewer discusses how much Nancy wants women to succeed in politics -- but neglects to point out how the Democrats handled the most recent female VP nominee.

As I say, if this is due to a publication time-lag it is not an affront. But it sure caught my eye. My own opinion (although I haven't read Nancy's book) is that Nancy's book became very obsolete very quickly.

Her book ranked dead last in sales on Amazon. Sarah's book is sold out! America doesn't like liberalism and Nancy is just too dense to get it!

Only kidding with you, you make a good point. She sold a little over four thousand books. Meanwhile went to recess to go on this book tour, leaving no energy bill to debate in congress. People should not forget that she ruined their summer by keeping gas prices outrageously high.
