UC Berkeley begins felling trees for stadium

BERKELEY - Crews began cutting down trees next to Memorial Stadium at UC Berkeley late Friday, 21 months after activists climbed into the trees to protest the university's plan to raze them to build a $140 million sports training center center.

Work crews with chainsaws and bulldozers arrived at the university grove Friday and by 4 p.m. six trees had been chopped down.

Clad in black ski masks, the four remaining tree protesters who were driven into a single redwood several months ago, remained in the tree Friday and at times sparred with arborists, tossing a bottle and branches toward the crews.

Arborists trimmed most of the branches from the redwood, leaving the few tarps and wooden platforms and the tree sitters alone before moving on to other trees on the south side of the grove.

Hillary Lehr, a tree supporter, lets out a scream as she watches one of the oak trees fall after being cut down at the UC Berkeley Memorial Oak Grove Friday September 5, 2008. The University has begun the process of cutting down the trees in the grove to make way for a new 140 million dollar sports training center. Lehr is a resident of Berkeley and a UC Berkeley Alum.

I’m thinking a tranquilizer gun, a trampoline (or two) and a video camera.

I didn’t know that loons nest in the fall. Something must be done before they begin to breed.

Lehr is a resident of Berkeley and a UC Berkeley Alum.

That helps explain why this person looks so weird.

IMO, these trees should have been fogged with tear gas 24x7 until the Environuts moved on.

“months after activists climbed into the trees to protest the university's plan to raze them to build a $140 million sports training center center. “

These punks need to held financially responsible for the delays on this project.
Any financial assets they have should be seized for compensation. If no assets, then go for their kidneys to sell.
