Isn't this the whole point that Andrew Jackson was making 180 years ago? The democrats have strayed a bit from that ideal in the intervening years.
Jackson has nothing in common with modern Democrats. They harken back to the Federalists, who are often wrongly associated with modern Republicans (just because Adams was a conservative does not mean all Federalists were). Probably because Lincoln et al. were updated Federalists. Trust me, modern Republicans are not the party of Lincoln (though we like to use his names for the Emancipation thing).
