Fear of black hole machine triggers threats to researchers

Scientists preparing to fire up the world's largest atom smasher are being flooded with phone calls and emails – even death threats – from people worried that the Large Hadron Collider, when activated, will obliterate planet Earth.

Yeah, but there’s no large mountain careening towards the Earth at the momment.

Although, I suppose, if we screwed up gravity enough . . .

The nasty locusts things are particularly distirbing.

LOL. And to think, I used to laugh at stories from Kenya about people burning down some poor old woman’s house because she was a “witch” or asking African Albinos for their spit because it had healing powers.

I’ll have to keep my elitist, culturally superiod mouth shut in the future.

Yes the truthers have really thought this out. If the scientists turn on the collider and destroy the world, then the truthers will hunt the scientists down and kill them. yeah really well thought out.

Can’t we just learn from the example of the “Great Gazoo”?

“Like global warming. Ignorant “scientists” propagating nonsense.”

Al Gore is no scientist that’s for sure.

People attacking the Hadron collider remind me of the people that went after the launch of space probes with nuclear material aboard them used for power in deep space.

I will never understand it.

"Fear of black hole machine triggers threats to researchers"

I sure hope John Wiley Price doesn't find out about this.

I sure hope he doesn't either. You don't happen to have his e-mail addy, do you?:)

WND also reported some of those scientists are suing to delay CERN's plan to fire up the Collider on Sept. 10, hoping more safety studies will be done before unleashing the Collider's power.

Oh, great. Now I don't have to worry making out a will, or the stock market; look on the bright side, it can be nice to be doomed.:D

Fast forward 63 years to this far more sophisticated and more powerful experiment...

Does this really involve more power than a nuclear bomb?

Who are "flat earthers"? Can't be Christians. The bible says the earth is a globe. Must be those darned atheists...

Seriously, people have good cause to be concerned. After all, the sun is a spontaneous ball of fire that no one quite understands how it keeps fueling itself. All you can do is repeat a popular theory. Theories are not absolute truths. Little "science" is.

My wife says the same thing every time I eat Mexican food. Hasn’t happened yet, but there have been some close calls.

I'm more worried about the antimatter containment pods.

You risk the same effect when you point a mirror at a mirror.

Nah, but it might cause this, which may be even worse.

The fuel is already there and is limited.

What's not to understand? They have a fear of "scientists" (who is really a bona fied "scientist" that understands all?) triggering a spontaneous, unstoppable nuclear chain reaction.

These "scientists" are really just physics students betting on a THEORY, but they really can't say with absolute certainty what is going to happen, if it will even work, or if it will work TOO good.

What does happen once this kind of fusion begins? can it be stopped? Nobody knows for certain.

"The fuel is already there and is limited."

And you know this how?

I say the fuel is constantly accumulated. The sun has a very strong gravity which attracts even the smallest atoms from the furthers reaches of this galaxy. Space isn't exactly a vacuum with nothing in it.
