Yesterday the McCain camp hit back hard on this front-page NYT story by Elisabeth Bumiller reporting that Sarah Palin had been a member of the Alaska Independence Party in the 1990s.
Today, the paper ( New York Times ) writes:
" The chairwoman of an Alaskan political party that advocates a vote on the states secession from the union said Tuesday that she had been mistaken when she said Gov. Sarah Palin was a member of the group.
A front-page story in The New York Times on Tuesday ...
The information in the Times article was based on a statement issued Monday night by Lynette Clark...
On Tuesday night, Ms. Clark said that her initial statement was incorrect and had been based on erroneous information provided by another member of the party whom she declined to identify. "

No doubt the retraction was in Section H-5, underneath the Real Estate Classified.

Bumiller asserted as fact what turns out to have been an “incorrect” statement by a single, unidentified source.
Given that the story appeared on the front-page of this country’s ‘paper of record,’ we might be forgiven for expecting a slightly more rigorous standard of reporting, yet Bumiller makes no apologies...
She is completely confident in the word of a single source who has since retracted her claims?
What kind of operation are the editors at the Times running?

Not a very good one!
“What kind of operation are the editors at the Times running?”
One that is going through a death rattle.
Think Jason Blair. Think Dan Rather
“No doubt the retraction was in Section H-5, underneath the Real Estate Classified.”
Count on it. I’m a news/political junkie, and I knew NOTHING about this retraction or about the McCain camp hitting back about it - seems I find out most of the important facts from this Board!! Thank you, Free Republic - but a real shame for the millions of voters who don’t hear the truth from any sources/media at all.
That’s SO unfair. Fox News Channel is running an hour bio on Sarah right now, but even THEY haven’t righted this wrong (to my knowledge).

"The report was incorrect, but the future allegations are true."
NYT writes the script for the rest of the Karaoke Media Machine (KMM). For them to admit an error is a big deal. We’ll see if the KMM picks up the retraction.
Newspapers should adopt the policy of issuing ALL retractions on the Front page, above the fold.
Newspapers should adopt the policy of issuing ALL retractions on the Front page, above the fold.
I still prefer the Mad Magazine version: “All the News that Fits, We Print”.
The jerks should be fined and forced to run the retraction on the front page for 3 consecutive days.
What ever happened to idea of checking your sources?
Fold you twits.
There be no such thing.
They will just print more rumors.
No wonder their circulation is tanking.
Single source unverified news.
What a RAG the NYT has become.
In NYC you can't give it away.
People use it for their bird cages and compost.
Concrete proof that Bumiller is incompetent. Any future words written by her are totally irrelevant.
The NYT has long past its time as the newspaper of reocrd.
Fake, but accurate.
They are running Obama campaign ads for free which is one reason the paper is going broke; they are hoping he wins so he can give them money from the US Treasury.
Bumiller was on a media panel on the Travis Smiley show last night.
All three MSM panelists defended the coverage and investigations into Palin.
One woman reporter named Hall said that the MSM is responsible for vetting the candidates so the public will have info to make a decision. (audience applause)
Interesting that they continue to follow this line that they are the ‘vetters of last resource’ when they decide that the Party hasnt done enough.
What vetting or follow up on Obama has been done by them?
You’d think somebody would speak up in the board meeting and say, “why don’t we try ethical reporting?”. You know, just to think outside the box.
Zero. That’s where I want to see their stock value. Same as their candidate.
LOL! Great cartoon.
I think the puny recent uptick is due to rumors that Murdoch will try to acquire this rag.
Note - the Times does not say they were wrong, but the person they quoted was wrong...
Thanks geo. By the end of the current election campaign, I don’t doubt there will be need to retract many more, such that the Times should just save ‘em up and have an “all-retractions” issue.
Bumiller is and has been a partisan media shill, and a reputable newspaper would have canned her long ago.

[snip] Among other things, the Gray Lady had run a shamefully slanted and misleading piece by White House reporter Elisabeth Bumiller, “A Democratic Rallying Cry: Vote Bush out of Rove’s Office,” in January 2004 that peddled the Democratic campaign criticism of Rove: “Elusive to reporters, infamous for browbeating Republican operatives (and members of Congress) who displease him, Mr. Rove is the man who told Republicans they should use the war on terrorism for partisan advantage.” [end]

There ought to be a law that any retraction must be posted in the exact same page where the false assertion was made, and must be run for a minimum of three days including the Sunday edition.
Or better yet, there ought to be a law that retractions/corrections for any story must be posted on the front page, top column left in font size 5 and run for a minimum of three days including the Sunday edition.
Here is something, we can all do this week to start eliminating the NY Slimes as a threat to our nation.
We can do it at our computers and do it in less than 1 hour. Besides sending a severe warning to the NY Slimes and the mutual fund companies which buy and own NY Slimes stock. We will improve our precious investment capital being wasted on NY Slimes stock.
If a few thousand freepers did this simple action this week and a few thousand new freepers, friends and relatives each following week, we will have a terminal impact on the vile NY Slimes acts like their trashing of Sarah Palin.
Please send this simple "how to" to your blogs, friends, relatives and email lists. This action will serve as a cannon shot across the bows fo the other Dinosaur Liberal Fish Wraps re sedition will not be tolerated any more.

Want to smash the NY Slimes?
How many of us own mutual funds which own NY Slimes stock and even worse have increased their NYT holdings this year. NYT investment by a mutual fund company is a terrible investment re the dollar loss in Stock value the last 2 years. Those investments are an attempt to keep the NY Slimes afloat with our mutual fund $'s. Now it is very evident that the NY Slimes is an agent and abettor of the al Qaeda Serial Killers. The Slimes is endangering the lives of our families, friends, innocent Americans and every warrior of ours. Go to this link to see if your mutual fund owns NYT. http://moneycentral.msn.com/ownership?Symbol=NYT http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/invsub/ownership/ownership.asp When the MS Money stock home page comes up, enter NYT into the search area and hit enter and the following screen will show up re ownership of the NY Slimes stock: The New York Times Company: Ownership Information
Highlight the Mutual Fund Ownership and hit enter. If thousands of Freepers, whose mutual funds own shares of NY Slimes did the following:
We might have a lot more impact than trying to boycott companies which sell to the elite liberals of NYC and advertise in the NY Slimes. |
