Russian Units Raid Georgian Airfields For Use In Israeli Strike Against Iran
DEBKAfile ^ | September 6, 2008

Posted on 09/07/2008 5:03:56 AM PDT by Fennie

The raids were disclosed by UPI chief editor Arnaud de Borchgrave, who is also on the Washington Times staff, and picked up by the Iranian Fars news agency.

The Russian raids of two Georgian airfields, which Tbilisi had allowed Israel to use for a potential strike against Iran's nuclear facilities, followed the Georgian offensive against South Ossetia on Aug. 7.

Under the secret agreement with Georgia, the airfields had been earmarked for use by Israeli fighter-bombers taking off to strike Iran in return for training and arms supplies.

AND the plot thickens.

The Russkies HAVE to be kicked OUT of Georgia and Russia has to be punished - BIG time. The Iranians are their surrogates.

Things are heating up for the big game. Mahmoud's Iran isn't going to stop its nuke program and Israel is going to wait to see him carry out his threats to wipe Israel off the map. What next? And when? What's the time line? Before or after November?

We now have Dick Cheney. Next we have a choice between Plugs Biden and Sarah Palin to deal with the world's many problems. And we can't forget who did so much to get us to game day: Jimmy Carter. There is little to suggest that Obama won't boldly go where Jimmy only fantasized. McCain raises many questions, but I don't question his commitment to Israel and to opposing radical islam and a return to the Soviet cold war.

Every time I see that name - Jimmy Carter - in the context of Iran, it makes me so angry I can’t see straight (my dog is typing this for me).

Why oh why did that man not invade after the Iranians overran our embassy? Our embassies are considered US soil. One failed raid does not equal a proper response.

Well, it’s Debka.

Yes it is Debka but the story makes sense to me.

Look at a map and tell me just how you can fly out of Israel for a surprise attack on Iran. I don't think it is possible. The idea that they would fly from a base in Georgia makes a lot of sense to me.

Under the secret agreement with Georgia, the airfields had been earmarked for use by Israeli fighter-bombers taking off to strike Iran in return for training and arms supplies.

Northern Iran and the Tehran region, where most of the nuclear facilities are concentrated, would be within range, with no need to request US permission to pass through Iraq air space.

Tbilisi had allowed Israel to use for a potential strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities

Looks like Russia wants to spread some of the targeting heat to Iran so they and the Chinese don’t have to be the only real bad guys on the block.

Called this one as far back as August 10. And of course there were the "experts" here that just had to blather on about how uninformed and incorrect I was for stating that the underlying issue was Russia trying to stop Israel from taking out the Iranian nuke plants. Which as it turns out appears to be the exact reason for Russia to suddenly go ape-s&it over a rather tiny bit of territory.

From my previous Posts, Aug 10 – 19.

This thing is bigger than you think pal.

As you can see, this thing is bigger than it appears.

This is classic distraction scenario in which Russia is, through a totally out of proportion action, is trying to create an atmosphere where most folks would think it best to delay that little Israeli airstrike.

Post 55

To make people think it is a very bad time for Israel to flatten Iran’s nuke bomb manufacturing facilities?
Post 10

They seem to be keeping a goodly distance from Turkey, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.

Gotta be a reason.

Russia is launching a clandestine assault on the West using terrorist states as proxies.

Georgia is strategic for both oil distribution, and for preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

In this increasingly-dangerous environment, ZERO would have America unilaterally disarm and barred from achieving energy independence.

Palin is an expert on energy, and in today’s world, THAT is real and meaningful economic, national security and foreign policy credentials.

NEVER TRUST A SOCIALIST.

NEVER TRUST A LIBERAL.

"... makes me so angry I can’t see straight (my dog is typing this for me)."

Did you name your dog Jim? ("Spaced Invaders" reference, a perennial fun Halloween movie. The dog is a hero.)

I used to let my dog answer the phone, but I had to make him stop. He was using "ruff" language.

Well, it’s Debka.

Also reported at Newsmax, under de Borchgrave's byline.

In a secret agreement between Israel and Georgia, two military airfields in southern Georgia had been earmarked for the use of Israeli fighter-bombers in the event of pre-emptive attacks against Iranian nuclear installations. This would sharply reduce the distance Israeli fighter-bombers would have to fly to hit targets in Iran. And to reach Georgian airstrips, the Israeli air force would fly over Turkey.

The attack ordered by Saakashvili against South Ossetia the night of Aug. 7 provided the Russians the pretext for Moscow to order Special Forces to raid these Israeli facilities where some Israeli drones were reported captured.

At a Moscow news conference, Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, Russia's deputy chief of staff, said the extent of Israeli aid to Georgia included "eight types of military vehicles, explosives, landmines and special explosives for clearing minefields." Estimated numbers of Israeli trainers attached to the Georgian army range from 100 to 1,000. There were also 110 U.S. military personnel on training assignments in Georgia. Last July 2,000 U.S. troops were flown in for "Immediate Response 2008," a joint exercise with Georgian forces.

Yeah Cheney went to Georgia. But I see no diplomatic or trade retaliation aganst the Russkies yet. They timed their actions very well.
