CARACAS (Reuters) - Several Russian ships and 1,000 soldiers will take part in joint naval maneuvers with Venezuela in the Caribbean Sea later this year, exercises likely to increase diplomatic tensions with Washington, a pro-government newspaper reported on Saturday.

Quoting Venezuela's naval intelligence director, Salbarore Cammarata, the newspaper Vea said four Russian boats would visit Venezuelan waters from November 10 to 14.

Plans for the naval operations come at a time of heightened diplomatic tension and Cold War-style rhetoric between Moscow and the United States over the recent war in Georgia and plans for a U.S. missile defense system in the Czech Republic and Poland.

Cammarata said it would be the first time Russia's navy carried out such exercises in Latin America. He said the Venezuelan air force would also take part.

We should have a sign trailed by a P-3: “You are now under the CHOP of the 4th Fleet. We'll tell you if you can get out of the Caribbean on your own hulls again.”

Will they be nuclear armed? Ghosts of the Cuban Missile Crisis plus pay back for our ships going to Georgian ports. Nasty

On second thought, let’s knock out Venezuela like Russian did to Georgia.

Don’t ever try to tell me that the CIA isn’t less effective and dangerous than two Israeli girl scouts.

“sounds like they are getting the stinky end of the stick”

Depends on whether you’re looking for high culture or reveling in the fleshpots of the third world.

I’ve got a crazy idea: Russia wants McCain to win, so they are pulling all these little stunts right now.

This oughta be fun. It's really starting to get interesting.

"Later this year" meaning before or after our elections? Will the Democrat-Propaganda-Media-Outlet report this? I don't think it would reassure the American public about Obama whose plan is to disarm us: Obama Security Plan

Notify the Navy to review Russian lifeboat identification in case one or two of their rust buckets sink during the show.

Hello? Kursk anyone? How much training has the Russian Navy (these four ships probably represent the only part that actually floats) been getting of late? I don’t even want to know the state of readiness of the Venezuelan Navy and Air Force. If they manage to pull off this exercise without all piling into each other or running aground, THEN I will be duly awed and intimidated.

I’m with the opinion that Putin really doesn’t care who gets elected.

Kinda strange that we would upgrade Hugo's ships for him.

My nephews worked on this one and another one, I believe. They were amazed at how filthy and poorly maintained they were.

I met one the ranking officers on another vessel NG upgraded. I sold them some medical gear for their sick bay. He was hung over, unshaven and smelly. LOL! Not a lot of discipline in that outfit. Of course, that was 8 years ago.

It would be interesting to see if the Russians decide to come through the Panama Canal on their way to the Pacific Ocean as a show a of force.

And we closed Roosevelt Roads and the Atlantic Fleet Weapons Training Range because liberal democrats wanted to get Vieques away from the Navy.

The United States should take preemptive action to protect our interests by taking over Cuba. This is just as important as ensuring the terrorists don’t have sanctuaries in Iraq and Afghanistan.
