During his 7 September 2008 interview with George Stephanopoulos on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Obama said the following:
"I had to sign up for Selective Service when I graduated from high school. And I was growing up in Hawaii. And I have friends whose parents were in the military. There are a lot of Army, military bases there.
"And I actually always thought of the military as an ennobling and, you know, honorable option. But keep in mind that I graduated in 1979. The Vietnam War had come to an end. We weren't engaged in an active military conflict at that point. And so, it's not an option that I ever decided to pursue."
Obama did graduate from high school in Hawaii in 1979, but he could not have registered for Selective Service then. Nobody could. In 1975, President Gerald Ford terminated the Military Selective Service Act. It was not reinstated until July 1980. That is one year after Obama graduated from high school. In July 1980, Obama was no longer living in Hawaii. He was living in Los Angeles.

What was obama saying about “you cant just make stuff up”
More lies from the “I” guy....
I remember when and where I registered and I am older than BO.
I remember when and where I registered and I am older than BO.
He had no friends.
registering was abolished in 1975. Obamadon, liar of Ramadan. I guess he will be lying for the whole month of September
This is true. I was in the last class that had to register — at 18 in 1975.
If BO being the candidate that so many people want doesn’t say something about the state of this country then I don’t know what does....
Hmm, that hasn’t happened to me in a long time.
Pic of crying girl: STOP PICKING ON BARACK!
So maybe he slipped up. The question is did he sign up in 1980 or later? Was every young man required to?
Also, something about words means something?
Nothing here:
Via Pajamas Media:
After contacting the Selective Service System for an answer several times since late June, Pajamas Media obtained official confirmation from the Selective Service System via email that Barack Obama did indeed register for the Selective Service as required by law, and is eligible to run for the presidency.
Mr. Owens,
Barack Hussein Obama registered at a post office in Hawaii.
The effective registration date was September 4, 1980.
His registration number is 61-1125539-1.

Are you sure that there is no requirement to still register, even though there is no draft? Seems to me registration is sill required, but could be wrong.
Something’s funny here.
I also graduated from high school in 1979, and I registered for selective service. It wasn’t an issue with me, but I seem to recall that it was required.
He registered Sept 4, 1980 if this is accurate.

It is a rumor that the Obama campaign has chosen to ignore despite numerous requests, and it is a rumor that even Snopes couldnt seem to confirm or deny definitively.

This idiot gets away with more stuff.... and is totally unbelievable. His supporters are blind, deaf, and mental midgets.
As I always said, as I said before, uuhhmm, aaahmmm, uuuuu, aaaah, .....
- more (lying) “brilliance” from hollow suit
I signed up for selective service in 1986 when I turned 18

The Vietnam War had come to an end. We weren’t engaged in an active military conflict at that point
He completely disregards the Cold War which by all accounts in the 80’s was going to make or break the U.S. against Russia.... I guess my service was uneeded...since I spent the 80’s and 90’s and a couple of the 00’s as part of this greatest military on the planet
He registered...maybe he’s dumb trying to build a story around it, when it was probably just going to the post office and getting it over with.
But he did register...no story here.
Barack "How do I get out of this chicken sh!t outfit" Obama illuminates us on why he didn't pursue an ennobling career. Oh, if only there'd been a war going on somewhere, he'd've kicked some serious tail.
Good one.
there was this comment in this article later on...

You need to actually 'clear' it.
This guy is completely shameless. Anyone can say, “I really wanted to join the military but there was no war, so I decided to do something else.” He is difficult to watch.
People in the military should be glad this Gomer/Sad Sack never served. This Beetle Baily goof ball would have put other lives at risk, even during peace time...
This report doesn’t sound right to me either. I graduated in 1978, and clearly remembering registering. As I recall it was required even though there was no draft.
Yes, there is.
BO says he registed in 1979, not 1980 and as I said, I remember exactly when and where.
I don’t remember the exact date. It was within six weeks of turning 18, and before graduating high school. I remember where; the post office in my home town.
Then on July 2, 1980, President Jimmy Carter signed Proclamation 4771, Registration Under the Military Selective Service Act, retroactively re-establishing the Selective Service registration requirement for all 18-26 year old male citizens born on or after January 1, 1960. Only men born between March 29, 1957, and December 31, 1959, were completely exempt from Selective Service registration.[2] The first registrations after Proclamation 4771 took place on Monday, July 21, 1980, for those men born in January, February and March 1960 at U.S. Post Offices. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays were reserved for men born in the later quarters of the year, and registration for men born in 1961 began the following week [3].
LOL. Obama is in trouble on this one!!! Well, wait, the MSM which is so vigilant about poring through the divorce records of private citizens who have nothing to do with politics probably won’t want to begin any serious vetting of Obama even now........
Still, he is now on record making an assertion about his supposed draft registration that is blatantly untrue. He could not have registered for the draft in Hawaii when he graduated high school in 1979 because registration for the draft had not yet been enacted. His campaign will surely try to say he simply mixed up the date and that he registered with Selective Service in 1980 when the law changed to require it. Still, the issue is now (finally) on the table and it ought to be possible to pressure at least a couple of reporters to demand to see real evidence of his Selective Service registration that he was required by law to do, and not to simply accept any Obama campaign spin or “fake but accurate” campaign press releases.
I had to register in 1983 when I separated from the Army, believe it or not.
Me too and that is what I thought that '75 was the last year.
Perhaps he has Hitlery on his campaign staff now and we will hear about all the times that he had to dodge bullet's while overseas?
Maybe 1979 was when he signed up for his “sleeper cell”
More of the same old intentions-are-more-important-than-results crap we have come to expect from the left.
As far as registering for selective service, I can understand him mixing that up.
I had to register as well, but if you asked what year I could have just as easily said 79 as 80. Turns out it had to be 1980. I couldn't tell you where I registered because I too moved around a lot at that time. I do remember sending in change of address forms to them a few times.
I will give him a pass on that as long as he did indeed register.
I remember my draft number. 47! Guess I’m showing my age. ;^)
If he had been in my unit in basic training which was mostly older guys, his face would look a lot different today!
A GOOD LIAR lets everyone accuse him of lying, until he says something that is true. Then he pounces. Because they took it for granted.
Which is easy to do.
Seems he’s not lying, IN THIS CASE.
(and this was a general response to all of us, and not you in particular)
: )
He was in Los Angeles in 1980, so it wouldn’t surprise me if his family back in Hawaii registered *for* him (not supposed to do such things, but hey).
I vaguely remember my Postman asking me questions and filling out a form *for* me when I registered.
Have there been any photos of him eating during the day, lately?
Maybe I just haven't seen any.
Well, that didn't take long. BO knows he's being scrutinized intensely. What's that Billy Joel song?--Pressure!
I guess it's just me but he seems to try too hard to press the 'fact' he's from Hawaii:
According to my husband who spent 26 years in the Army, it is still required.
Thanks! I knew I’d seen that somewhere.
