Heartless: Gretchen has more soul anyway
redstate.com ^ | September 7, 2008 | Josh Painter

So the aging hippie-chick Wilson sisters of the 1970s-80s rock band Heart object to their song "Barracuda" being played at McCain Palin events. So what?

Why not use another Wilson's (no relation, I think) song instead? Gretchen Wilson likely would not mind loaning her wildly popular country anthem "Redneck Woman" to Sarah Palin, I'll wager. Gretchen was a Fred Thompson supporter early on and performed at last week's RNC convention for the McCain-Palin ticket. She might even be willing to re-write a variation custom-tailored for the GOP vice presidential nominee.

Just as an exercise in such speculative thought, here's one possibility:

Hockey Momma

Well, I ain't never been your basic liberal harpie type
No, I can't drink the left's Kool Aid, I stay away from all that hype
I hunt and fish and ride a snowmmobile for fun
You can find me in the outdoors on my daily ten-mile run

Some elites they look down on me, but I don't give a rip
I can shoot an M-16 just fine with a baby on my hip
'Cause I'm a hockey momma
I ain't no left-wing snob
I'm just a product of the middle-class
And my husband's true heart throb
He helps me raise the kids so I can do my job
I'm a happy warrior princess who's pretty as a peach
And I know all the words to every Ronald Reagan speech
So here's to all my sisters who help to keep our country free
Let me get a big 'Sarah' from the hockey moms like me
Sarah!

I must admit the state's jet plane was plush and really nice
But I can fly on Alaska Airlines for less than half the price
I stood up tall to Exxon, to Conoco and BP
They own some politicians but they never will own me
You might think I'm too blue collar and a little too hardcore
But in my neck of the woods I'm just the girl next door

Hey I'm a hockey momma
I've been cleaning up my state
That good ol' boy network
Has met its match and met its fate
And I cut pork spending with my trusty veto pen
And cut taxes in my state to put an end to tax-and-spend
And I know all about oil and gas and other kinds of energy
So here's to all my sisters who help to keep this country free
Let me get a big 'Sarah' from the hockey moms like me
Sarah!

I'm a hockey momma
And my son is headed to Iraq
I'll pray each day for his safe return
Until the day that he comes back
You better leave my kids alone, I say without a doubt
Or Sarah Barracuda will chew you up and spit you out
You won't ever make me cry, you won't ever hear me whine
You'd best give it you best shot, because I just may break you spine
I'm gonna help The Maverick shake up Washington DC
Let me get a big 'Sarah' if you want me to be VP
Sarah!

Sarah!

I said Sarah!

So what are the Wilson sisters going to do...sue?

If they make trouble, we can sell our Heart CDs on Amazon or eBay and give the money to the McCain/Palin ticket!

I was hollering to my husband when I saw Gretchen Wilson at the Convention, and I said “She’s gonna sing it! She’s gonna sing “Redneck Woman”!! I was SO disappointed that she didn’t sing it...

I felt so redneck at that moment. Seriously, it would be a GREAT song for Sarah!

Gretchen Wilson looks like she might be Ann’s daughter.

This thread is useless without pics.

I love Gretchen Wilson. Soooo much better than the pre-fab cotton candy that usually comes out of Nashville.

That said, Heart is still a bad-ass band.

None of their muzak is worth listening to.

Great version. Too bad Nancy Wilson is playing guitar in it.

I was just about to post that. But the more senstive types here might want to avoid it. Nancy Wilson makes an appearance. Wouldn’t want anybody’s panties to get in a twist. In fact, since Gretchen has appeared on stage with Nancy, I don’t think I can vote for the McCain-Palin ticket anymore. So it goes.

Too funny! I’ve spent a good deal of my life, living just south of the Mason Dixon Line and having people ask me; “Can you say your name again? How do you say that? How do you spell that?

Now days after Red Neck Woman, people are more likely to ask me; Gretchen? Like Gretchen Wilson? And I just say, “Hell Yeah!”

- Gretchen

I’ve read Gretchen is the niece of Ann & Nancy. Great song and I’m still voting Palin-McCain.

Hey if they can use it for Sarah at the convention so can I.

Nancy and Ann will have to cool their jets.

I check her bio on her official web site and also on Wikipedia. There’s no mention of her being related to Ann and Nancy.

Better picture:

And what the Dems and their media surrogates are perhaps forgetting is that a lot more people in this country, east, south, west, north, midwest: consider themselves or identify more with the rednecks or the small town and hard working folk than they do with the quiche eating, chardonnay swilling, elitist Ivy League educated, Washington, inside the beltway power brokers, big media types.

From the Boondocks

My dad was raised in the “boondocks” of southern Norway before coming to the USA. I was born and raised in the small town “boondocks” of upstate NY, then the small town boondocks of the farming communities of south NJ, then boondocks of Amish eastern central PA, then the boondocks of western MD before moving to Baltimore City. But I’ve never forgotten where I’ve come from or what I stand for. I always keep part of my heart and soul in the boondocks.

Gretchen is in a lawsuit right now for plagiarizing a song from the Black Crows. The song she sings for a TV program is almost riff for riff a copy of the Black Crow song.

The difference between a liberal leaning artist and a conservative artist is graciousness. Brooks and Dunn had their song, Only In America played at the Republican Convention back in 2004. In fact, they played it for Bush. When Obama had one of his first conventions, the same song was played for the crowd. Brooks and Dunns' response? They said their song just proves that we are all Americans and were grateful that the Democrats saw fit to use their song even though Brooks and Dunn are staunch Republicans. There is the stark difference...pettiness versus graciousness.
