Did Obama Tell A Lie About Desire To Join Military?
Posted at 19:30 by Big Dog in Political
Barack Obama must need more sleep and after the week he has had he must need a cigarette. The Sainted One was on This Week with George Stephanopoulos and he made two mistakes. The first one dealt with the smears against candidates and he stated that the McCain campaign had not brought up My Muslim faith. I know what he meant but it was certainly a slip of the tongue he does not need because under Islam one may lie to further the religion. How many will see it this way? Fortunately for Obama, George was there to correct him like a good Democrat. Obama went on to say how McCain surrogates had been the ones and completely ignored the fact that Hillary and her peeps were the ones to spread this all over during the primary. That is what ticks me off the most about Obamas answer.
There is one item that is more than likely an outright lie. Obama was asked if he had ever considered joining the military and he said he had. This little tidbit has NEVER been mentioned during the oh so long campaign and according to the news, Obama did not mention this in either of his books. One would think that might be a big deal. It is likely that Obama is lying about this in order to ingratiate himself with people who actually support the military. The second part of the lie comes in when he said he had to register for the Selective Service when he graduated from high school. There was no registration for the Selective Service when Obama graduated.
The draft and the Selective Service registration were ended by Republican presidents (Nixon and Ford respectively) and the new registration requirement was instituted by a Democrat, Jimmy Carter. Yes, Obama was required to register but he graduated in 1979 and the registration was reinstated in 1980. Therefore, Obama was not required to register when he graduated, as he claims in the interview. He was not required to register until a year later.
Obama claims that he decided against joining because we were not engaged in an actual conflict at that time (though we were in a standoff with Iran over hostages, if he thought about it in 1979). I guess we are supposed to believe that the guy who wants a defeat in Iraq was willing to join the service, had we been at war.
It is more likely that Obama realizes his life lacks in military service when one considers the other three candidates. Biden has a son in the Guard who will deploy next year, McCain served and has two sons in the service and Palin has a son in the military who is deploying this week. Obama is the odd person out having never served and having children who are too young to serve (and will never serve anyway).
I think this is a huge lie on the part of Obama. People can defend him if they want but the timeline of the draft registration coupled with the fact that he never mentioned this in his books or during this campaign tells me that it was recently concocted.

Neither the Telegraph or Stephanopoulos pointed out the inaccuracies.
>Did Obama lie about joining the military?<
Was Obama’s mouth moving?
Obama? Lie? Nooooooooooo....
Obama is a lie.
NRO is calling this story debunked.
Yes, but it was a nuanced.
I also noticed how George leads the witness by asking: Was that phrase too flip? regarding Obama’s gaffe at the Saddleback forum.
Remember that George was the one who kept Clinton out of hot water and he knows how to resurrect politicians.
The problem now is that George is supposed to be a journalist and not a political consultant!!!!

I’m certain that he did consider joining the military. I am more than happy to narrate the entire thought.
“Would joining the military help me get into the White House later down the road when I decide to run after only a few years of political experience? I bet it would. But I heard that boot camp is really hard. So I’ll just take some more public speaking lessons.”
End narration.
Is William Ayers a great American?
Ohh Puhleeze.. Obama doest have the fortitude to join the “webelos”
He was probably talking about the army of Islam.
One joins the military branch of one’s choice to serve his COUNTRY whether in peace or war. It’s something that you either have in your heart or not but don’t lie and make excuses.
I’ve had my problems with Sen. McCain as I have my President but Obama, you’re a phony, an empty suit, a liar and a dangerous puppet. Who are your puppet masters Obama? You are a danger to our way of life and I plan on dealing misery to your campaign the only way I can: contribute to McCain/Palin, and informing as many folks as possible.
I bet he really did think about it--for a nanosecond-- before deciding that the military was for suckers.
“Why’d ja tell her I was a community organizer? You know how I always wanted to pretend I was a soldier.”
Tip of the hat to George Costanza of Seinfeld.
“NRO is calling this story debunked.”
Check again. Jonah has retracted his “debunking”

hmmm ... wonder how all the code pink peacenik types on the left feel about him saying this? He’s trying to adhere himself to the undecided right-leaning masses but he may just alienate his ‘supporters’ in the process. This revelation can’t play very well in places like San Francisco.
Barack Obama was a Marine.
Wouldn't that make him an imperialist? Tell the truth now.
You think?? His freakin' nose is already a foot long...what difference does another couple of inches make? Next, he'll be telling us he ran a four minute mile under the Golden Gate Bridge. Creep!!!

Actually he walked across the water.
Barama H00ahh! Osama
The title should have a "thrown under the bus alert".
Whether obama registered or not, there is no way he thought seriously about joining the military since he never mentioned it in either book, never mentioned it in any debate or public appearance until 3 days after John McCain’s rousing military hero night at the convention.
Oh, yeah! McCain reminded me. I just recalled that I wanted to join the military after high school.
Sure. Where’s that BS meter?
Update from the reader who sent me the item:
Jonah,
Sorry to create some confusion with this item. The point of what I sent you was not that Obama never registered. We'd already determined that he had on the thread I linked in my email. The point is, he did not register "when (he) graduated from high school" as he said today on ABC. In fact, he didn't register until a year and a half later when he was already a college student at Occidental. That significantly undermines his explaination that he actually considered joining the military because he was living in Hawaii and a lot of his friends had military connections. It also undermines his excuse that we were no longer engaged in "active" conflict.
When he registered, he was not a high school graduate exploring career options. He was a college student in a world in which the Soviet Union had invaded Afghanistan and the Iranians had captured our embassy in Tehran.
But again, sorry for the confusion. I'm an avid reader and had no intent of steering you wrong.
Me (Goldberg): Errors we're all mine for not paying enough attention to begin with.

Wow! That’s something you don’t see anymore! Someone in the media coming out and admitting they were wrong! Journalism students these days are being taught to say, “Yeah! It’s fake! But it’s accurate!” Cudos to Jonah.
Obama join the military?
He must be joking. His early mentors and perhaps his mother
held the military in total contempt.

Barak hates families because pro-murder like him have enjoyed isolation from scrutiny, intrigue and blame. A family is a witness he wants not, or wants under a burqua.
That in itself makes him wanting to join a military of shared responsibility type unit completely oxymoronic. The guy does not care or would not care about the military even if he were in it. He of course would rather not go through that.
He is another son of darkness that rats foolishly love to romanticize about. Creeps and admirer of creeps.

His hate of scrutiny, calling it “smear from the right” goes hand in hand with the bold face lie of wanting to join military scrutiny. Stephanopoulos is also a creep to manipulate those two things subliminaly. THis was no accident.

Yeah I was going to join the military... they were going to make me a General, yeah a General that's the ticket. But I turned them down because there was no conflict, except that Iran thingy. Yeah, yeah that's the ticket I turned them down!
The art of the lie is to make 2 lies within the same seemingly interview, having nothing seemingly to do with each other. It also serves to verify amongst coded liars that Obama is one of their own.
1. He lies about the smear in so much as he cannot take legit scrutiny.
2. He lies about joining the military and undergoing courage scrutiny there.
QED
In other words, it’s all lies about a big lie that Obama is. THis was just as important to mislead the public as to establish a Clintonesque pathological liar cult agreement.
Of course he lied. As I noted on the other thread, the conflict with Iran was clear. He might not have been available for the hostage rescue mission, but had he enlisted could have served in combat in Beirut, Grenada or Panama.
The guy is a trojan horse.
I consider 0bama the greatest threat to our country of all presidential candidates in our history, but we should still be fair.
1. He is almost certainly lying when he says that he considered joining the military. He doesn't have the character to have seen any value in military service, and the rest of his career marks him as one who scorns our soldiers.
2. I doubt that many of us who did not register immediately after graduation can remember when we registered for the selective service either. I remember doing it, but I would have guessed it was immediately after graduation too (it wasn't immediate, for the same reason as with 0bama).
Note: I didn't say we should be nice to our stealth communist, just fair.
I mean, considering his background he could say just about anything and then "I saw the error of my ways," But NOOO.
It is more likely that he is lying in order to try to convince people to accept the notion that he could be commander-in-chief. I shudder at the thought.
I just smacks of being another glib story.
He would have never made it. He would have been weeded out as not being worthy of wearing a uniform of the military.
If there’s quicksand in the area Obama will find it. Then he will step in it and then keep digging.
I’m beginning to wonder if one of the major reasons he picked Biden is because he has a son in the military so as to help give the ticket a little of that pro-military look. Maybe Biden’s ‘foreign policy’ experience is just a facade.
Seriously considering enlisting under Reagan is the kind of thing someone remembers and would recall during Beirut, Granada, Desert Storm etc.
Having written two auto biographies and being at the end of an 19 month primary campaign, means that his memories of his life in relation to military questions would be fresh and current.
I saw the date 1979.
We did not have Selective Service registration after we abolished the draft.
Carter reinstated it in 1980 after Russian invaded Afghainstan. I remember that.
