Drawing a Bead on the Press
The New York Times ^ | September 7, 2008 (Print: September 8, 2008) | David Carr

Posted on 09/07/2008 8:03:58 PM PDT by Gondring

Before Gov. Sarah Palin came flying in from the wilds of Alaska for the Republican convention in St. Paul, there was a lot of sniggering in media rooms and satellite trucks about her beauty queen looks and rustic hobbies, and the suggestion that she was better suited to be a calendar model for a local auto body shop than a holder of the second-highest office in the land.

Ms. Palin, unwilling to be rendered as a caribou-skinning cartoon, stepped to the microphone on Wednesday and punched back.

[...]

In the press galleries at the convention, journalists wrinkled their noses in disgust when Piper, Ms. Palin’s youngest daughter, was filmed kitty-licking her baby brother’s hair into place. But to many Americans — including some I talked to in the convention hall — that looked like family church on Sunday, evidence of good breeding and sibling regard.

Even her styling for the speech spoke volumes. Avoiding the fashion traditions of both show business and politics, Ms. Palin looked great, but not glamorous — more like the put-together neighbor down the street who got gussied up for date night with her husband.

[...]Ms. O’Hara was fired up by all the sudden energy, but a bit suspicious of those who were there to cover it.

“Conservatives have a bad history with The New York Times,” she said, looking at my press ID, still smiling and still very friendly. “How can I be sure that you won’t take my words and twist them to suit some agenda that you already have?”

Her friends from Montana leaned in and enjoyed the spectacle as I stammered my way through a response. I’m working on an answer because I don’t think it is the last time that question is going to come up.

David Carr seems to get it...somewhat.

How did this slip through?

They are probably planning a real hit job on her and printed this so they could claim they are “balanced”. Although that’s rarely been necessary before.

People like Carr and the rest of the cretins at NYT make me proud to be from rural fly-over country.

They can all pound salt.

I think Mr. Carr's wife informed him he better treat Sarah with respect.

If not, the sofa would need reupholstering before he would be allowed to return to the bedroom.

The jig is up, MSM/DBM.

Bravo Sierra. This is nothing but forced self-deprecation by a representative of a narcissistic pseudo-profession as a tool to disarm the rubes. This guy’s article is too precious for words, but no one should take this seriously. IMHO

The backlash against the media’s anti-Palin jihad seems to have rattled a few cages. Looks like the NYT is going to retract its fangs and lie low for a bit.

I think America saw a decent honest Conservative for the first time since RWR left office and they really really liked what they saw. The cognizant Left ( granted, a small minority ) is wetting their panties.

It’s actually David Carr’s colleagues who are the problem...read the whole piece and he actually makes Republicans sound vaguely human.

These elitists despise average American people.

Let some of those people (like Palin) do something extraordinary and they become apoplectic.

The modern MSM is full of scum and they hate us.

And the feeling is mutual.

Ms. Palin, a woman who clearly understands the power of words, had a way of pronouncing media — “MEE-de-ah” — that made it sound like something legless and slithering.

If it wasnt the NYSLIMES being disengenuous, this would be my quote of the day.

I think you're right. They are going to try a bit more subtlety in their hit pieces now.

Both of ‘em are losers! LOL.

David Carr of Houston Texans fame is actually a good guy, he’s just a terrible quarterback.
