McCain 'excited' by response to Palin

REPUBLICAN vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin may be drawing bigger cheers than her running mate, but John McCain isn't bothered in the least, a senior advisor said overnight. "Of course not, he's excited,'' Mark Salter said when asked if Senator McCain was jealous of the attention Ms Palin has been receiving since he announced his surprise choice of running mate on August 29.

"They're chanting 'John McCain' too,'' Mr Salter noted.

Senator McCain, 72, had long been viewed with suspicion by his party's conservative base for his more moderate views on a number of issues such as immigration, and his support for embryonic stem cell research.

He also deeply offended many by calling Christian evangelical leader Jerry Falwell an "agent of intolerance,'' and has struggled to rally support among the party's grassroots despite a number of efforts to reach out to them, including giving a commencement address at Mr Falwell's university.

An avid hunter and self-described "hockey mom,'' Ms Palin, 44, is beloved by conservatives for her strong opposition to abortion and her support of teaching creationism in school.

Republicans also rallied around Ms Palin when she was attacked by pundits for failing to put her family first, given that she has a four-month-old son with Down syndrome and her unmarried, 17-year-old daughter is pregnant.

She has been greeted by chants of "Sarah! Sarah!'' from the thousands of supporters who have come out to hear her speak with Senator McCain at campaign stops in battleground states.

And, during that one term, Senator McCain, please remember that the sole reason you will be occupying the Oval Office is because of her Conservatism, not your tendency to embrace Liberalism. IOW, no more amnesty deals, no more buddy-buddy deals with the likes of 'ole fat Teddy, et al, and no more unconstitutional crap like McCain-Feingold.....

McCain will be McCain. The Palin pick was just an example. Unfortunatly so are the points you’ve made. Never the less, I’m still voting for McCain/Palin, but mostly Palin! ;-)

Remember who gave you wings McCain. It wasn’t folks like Linseed and Joe Lieberman.

We like her best.

Yeah, I should have added "and whatever you do, Senator McCain, do not for one minute be deluded into thinking that Lindsey Graham is remotely qualified to be Attorney General or a Supreme Court Justice"......

So put two and two together.

From correspondents in Kansas City

I wonder who they work for. Sounds like something from the NYT in their new stealth mode after their carpet bombing of Palin proved to be counter-productive.

The day after he takes the oath, he announces that since he will be a single term President, he will only sign bills that are in the best interest of the Country... no earmarks allowed.

If the senate should try to stop his SCOTUS nominees by not bringing them to the floor for a vote, he will call emergency sessions of congress and keep them at their desks {like keeping the kids after school} until they do.

It's a start.

That's kind of what I was thinking. I'm of the opinion that McCain has actually selected his heir apparent in Gov. Palin. At age 72, he is most likely a one-termer anyway and could do this country a world of good if he retired after 3 years of his first term. This will let people get better acquainted with Gov. (VP?) Palin before he turns the reigns over to her. She can then run in '12 as the first term of her own tenure and will biatch!-slap Hillary to return to the WH as the first female president to win office on her own. In '16, she could run again for her second term. The next 10 years or so could, potentially, be very interesting.

BTW, IMO, McCain only wants to be president to be president - he doesn't have a particular goal he wants to accomplish other than to win the election.

I don’t think anyone will have to worry about the amnesty issue as long as we keep 43-45 GOP Senators for a filibuster. McCain can’t really do anything via executive order on this thing, since his plan required massive appropriations.
