I’m guessing also that the campaign rented the facility. I am involved in a recreation activity that frequently rents parts of a school or church. Commercial buildings are either not available, not suitable, or not cost effective. When I can help the school with its maintenance and upkeep while receiving the benefit of a dancing space, both of us win.

So why didn't we hear about this type of issue when Obama used the same facilities?

Oh that's right, he is a Democrat. My mistake.

"Still, some Obama supporters and community members are crying foul."

Of course they are. Exceptions should be made only for Democrats.

What a bunch of crybabies.

McCain campaign officials said they negotiated openly with school and Fairfax City officials

Go cry in a bag of money.

Is it a good idea for candidates to campaign in schools or on church property?

I would say no, except this is yet another recent (i.e. since Palin was announced) example of the GOP rubbing the liberals' faces in their own hyprocrisy.

Why not? What country are we in again???????

I remember Jimmy Carter’s Mama coming to a local high school when I was a child. Our “gifted” class went on a field trip to see her. I doubt it swayed anyone, but it was great fun for us to attend. Gary Hart came to my high school during the school day. I shook his hand. He was out of the race within a week if I recall correctly.

We went to see John Kerry at a high school, but it was on a weekend.

Well, true, but I guess I'm stuck with the same set of rules ought to apply for both. At least you seem to get where I'm coming from.

Why not? What country are we in again???????

Because I have seen how liberals abuse it, and why should taxpayers (and congregations) have to pick up the tab for the costs of the extra services? Let the campaigns host their own events. The schools along with the teachers' unions are pushing liberalism on our kids, probably 20 to 1, that's why not. Let the schools excuse the students if they want to go elsewhere.

I don't remember a candidate ever coming to our local schools (or churches) when I was growing up. We had to make the effort to go see themselves. I just decided it was just plain wrong. The schools made a big deal out of so many Dem candidates (think there was one area school that let a Republican speak some years ago), and I saw what they did. They pushed those kids to go register Dem, don't try to convince me they didn't, then they got them to go causus for Dems. That's why. And if I don't think it is right for Dems, I don't think it is right for any party because it has no place in the schools, and there is a big issue between separation of church and state. Just by having a candidate in the school/church, it gives the appearance they are endorsing them. That's why this school is angered because it isn't "their" candidate.

We went to see John Kerry at a high school, but it was on a weekend.

That doesn't make any difference wrt to point(s) above. I don't have a problem with your going to see Kerry; it's supposed to be a free country, but he should have rented a hall or another venue, that's all I'm saying.

I haven't decided yet if it is a good idea for them to visit businesses for the same reasons given above. It amounts to a campaign contribution by providing a free venue even if the candidates have to pay for SS and their entourage, plus it gives the appearance they support the candidate which is not fair to managers/employees who might support a different candidate.

It amounts to a captive audience.

Having trouble posting because I'm running NAV.

My point is that no one should be coerced in any way or subtly pressured, etc. One's choice and vote should be entirely of one's free will. Locally they said if the kids didn't want to go, they could stay in class. So that gives a subtle message to those who might remain behind "you're not one of us". I know how it is with kids. Not too many seem to get the ethics issue.

I worked for the government, and not only were candidates not allowed in the workplace which may not be entirely true across the board (once elected they might be able to visit solely in the course of their official duties, can't think of a good example), we were not allowed to discuss politics in the workplace towards the end of my years there. It would be hard to control what employees discuss during breaks, but at least the gives the appearance as being fair and impartial. For example, your supervisors; they wield a lot of power over you, even though you cast a secret ballot later. Employees shouldn't be made to feel like they are "out of step" and not a team player, etc.

It is also the voter's responsibility to gather their own information but not in the church, schools, or workplace. It's just what I have come to believe about ethics of elections.

I think you have to be 18 to vote, I'm getting old and forget some of the simplest things sometimes, so there would be some eligible. Please don't misunderstand. Kids should be taught in an impartial manner about the workings of government and how our system came about like we learned in civics class. We memorized the Preamble to the Constitution, about the Declaration of Independence, and memorized as much of the Gettysburg address as we could. Some of it still sticks with me after all these years. Some of it went in one ear and out the other. I do not remember any persuasion on whom to vote for. If you carry my views to their logical conclusions, I guess it would sound like I believe they shouldn't campaign anywhere which I don't mean at all. I just think there should be stricter accountability. People host Republican events and fundraisers in their homes, same for Democrats. Does not that amount to a campaign contribution "in kind" that should be expensed? Might it not be better if they were forced by law to rent their own halls or use a public outdoor area such as a public park for such events out of campaign contributions? Wow, if you follow my train of thought, it gets sticky, so please don't think my mind is entirely made up.

Two of my family members wanted to caucus for a Dem. They know who I support. So I take some time to call around and find out what they need to do and made no effort to try to persuade them to caucus for my candidate. How many people would be that fair? Some just might because they deal with partisanship in their own families. Would a liberal do what I did?

I read something awful yesterday about what some teacher reported her students were saying about Palin, names they couldn't even repeat and other trashy stuff. They were liberals and somewhat happy that these kids "saw the light" (my paraphrase). Where did these kids learn this?

No, a lot won't bother to vote, but some will. Plus while I believe it is a good thing to vote, I also would stand by a person's free choice not to vote for whatever reason.

There are actually some liberals who posted on a forum that those of us who voted for Bush should have our voting privileges suspended, like time out, until we "came to our senses", my words, can't remember exactly how they put it! That is actually how some people think! That is scarier than anything, that kind of thinking. Plus many believe we are actually criminals for having supported Bush. And there was no one to challenge the poster or disagree with them!

There is also another angle on our side I may take up another time, have gotten too wordy about this.

Doesn’t matter anymore. The rally has outgrown the high school and will now be in a park next to it.

The event was moved to Van Dyke park, well before this article saw publication. Typical lousy reporting on WaPos part.
