Republicans Falter in Outreach to Blacks, Hispanics
The Wall Street Journal ^ | September 5, 2008 | JONATHAN KAUFMAN

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Blacks are scarce here at the Republican National Convention.

Of the more than 2,300 Republican delegates who gathered this week, just 36 -- or 1.5% -- were black, the lowest portion in 40 years, according to a study by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, a Washington think tank that focuses on black issues.

That is substantially below the figure in 2004, when a record-setting 6.8% of Republican delegates were black.

The number of black Republican candidates running for federal office also has fallen sharply, to about seven from a high of 24 in 1996, according to the study. On an organizational level, just one of the more than 160 members of the Republican National Committee is black, the joint center says.

Officials and delegates here said the figures seem accurate. The Republican National Committee said 13% of registered delegates have identified themselves as belonging to an ethnic minority group, which would include Asians, Hispanics and others, along with blacks. About 24% of the delegates to the Democratic convention last week were black, a record, according to the study. The Democrats have policies to ensure that their delegates reflect the "diversity" of the party, a Democratic representative said.

"It's embarrassing," said Michael Steele, a Republican who is the former lieutenant governor of Maryland and is African-American. "It's been a failure in strategy and a failure in communication. The party wasn't doing what it was supposed to do."

For the most part both groups have turned their noses up at the Republican party, not the other way around. Often they don’t even give the other side a fair hearing.

That's unfortunate. However, it has to be expected with Katrina and Obama. Fairly or unfairly.

In the long run things will be different. The emergence of evangelical denominations such as pentacostals among the black community, and the growing recognition that the left's assault on marriage is destroying black communities, will bring more black voters on board.

And the truth is blacks are OVER represented at the GOP convention and UNDER represented at the DEM convention. Blacks vote for the DEMs by 90% to 10%. They represent about 30% of the DNC vote and only about 3% of the GOP vote. Blacks are 400% over represented at the GOP convention, and about 20% under reprepresented at the DNC convention.

Since Republicans do not encourage affirmative action, it makes sense because we don’t put a quota in place as the Democrats do for their convention. Democrats have convention quotas for blacks, Hispanics, women, and I think homosexuals.

If one is conservative, believes in freedom and the rights of the individual, there will never be quotas at a GOP convention.

Wish the minorities would clear their messages negative or positive so we can ‘get’ what they want!

They don’t want race introduced but want us to cater to race ???

Getoverit!

Do a good job and I could care less what your melanin content is.

“It’s embarrassing,” said Michael Steele, a Republican who is the former lieutenant governor of Maryland and is African-American. “It’s been a failure in strategy and a failure in communication. The party wasn’t doing what it was supposed to do.”

...Steele is right! It is embarrassing. The problem Republicans have had started with LBJ’s “Great Society” and continues wih race pimps like Jackson and Sharpton. Food Stamps, Section 8 housing, Guvmit cheese, Rap music, government public schools ALL have helped to brainwash blacks under the age of 50. The 50+ blacks remember the long road to civil rights, drinking from any water fountain, sitting anywhere on a bus etc. The younger ones are mostly indignant with a “give me” mentality.

The cameras showed the few blacks that were there. All over 50 I’d say.

The black leaders try and educate and the MSM calls those leaders “Oreo’s” and “Uncle Tom’s” to keep the blacks in their place.

I don’t think we’ll ever see more than a few black faces in the Republican ranks. 98% of the black population wants Obama BECAUSE he’s black. They don’t realize that they’ll go even further down the social ladder as a result. How do you deal with that?

I like Michael Steele- but- what the hell has he done about it? And what does he propose Republicans do? Embrace reparations?

When he was running for Senator Michael Steele couldn't even get folks o shake his hand when he was standing in line to vote in his home county.

I say focus on conservative principles and whoever agrees, great. No pandering.

should read “Blacks and Hispanics fail to realize they are part of the Dhimmicrat Party Plantation system and screw up again by voting for those losers.”

The Republican party will fail with anyone who just wants a free ride. The true Republican message is about give a helping hand not a hand out.

"It's embarrassing," said Michael Steele,

Not to me. The problem is not with us, but with them. They are being tribal. They have been balkanized. They are far more subject to to the identity politics of these times than we ever dreamed of being (in fact, most of us can't even fathom the attraction of it).

I shudder to think of myself so bound up in identity politics as to be unable to move along truly philosophical lines. Philosophy is uplifting, invigorating, exciting, new every morning. Tribalism is ancient, boring, moribund and stultifying. Who needs it?

Rupert Murdoch bought the WSJ. He is making that paper more tabloid-esque. Additionally, Murdoch loves Obama. The WSJ has been very, very good to Obama on their “news” pages.

The servility of whites to the wishes and demands to minorities has to be the biggest joke in the world, totally phony posturing of the elite. Go to a liberal sounding board the average run of the mill liberal who actually tries to live out a life of servility and self-hatred is an emotional wreck. They either move to a white neighborhood and practice “enviromentalism” or go into hate whitey mode with a vengence.

I guess the Republicans screwed up in '64 when they were instrumental in getting the Civil Rights Act out of committee and passed, over the objections of Democrat Party leaders.

Not surprised of the moaning over this by certain people.

The cronic complainers still haven't assimilated into the U.S., and won't in my lifetime.

Instead of the word outreach, we need to substitute the word “pander” which fits much better.

The Dem ‘outreach’ is to promise everything including the kitchen sink and delivery a big fat ZERO! But yet, year after year they keep voting in the Dems who promise the most and pander to them in each election cycle.

Prefer to have people join the Republican Party that believe in our principles; not because we promise them a lot of things we cannot deliver.

Aw jeez, not this AGAIN. Another article attempting to keep minorities from taking a good look at the Republican platform. The left is scared of something.

Look, I can only speak for myself and my reason for not being a face in the crowd. I didn’t attend many local events and make a place for myself in the party. I admit to not being as active as I should be and could be. With my move to TN, I’ve changed that. I volunteered to be a precint captain, make phone calls, or help staff the voting center in November. Writing checks is fine but I need to do more. I also make time to attend party events. People have been extremely welcoming.

Alot of people have put in the time and effort to support the party and I don’t need to be put ahead of them as a show of diversity. I’ll earn my place at the table, thank you.

To the media lurkers: try asking minority Democrats why they stay with a party that only panders to them during elections. Also ask if they know that the Democrat party is the party of slavery.
