Why rednecks may rule the world (don't read if you've got a heart condition)
BBC ^ | 6 September 2008 | Joe Bageant

Posted on 09/09/2008 4:30:59 PM PDT by Lorianne

During this US election cycle we are hearing a lot from the pundits and candidates about "heartland voters," and "white working class voters."

What they are talking about are rednecks. But in their political correctness, media types cannot bring themselves to utter the word "redneck." So I'll say it for them: redneck-redneck-redneck-redneck.

The fact is that we American rednecks embrace the term in a sort of proud defiance. To us, the term redneck indicates a culture we were born in and enjoy. So I find it very interesting that politically correct people have taken it upon themselves to protect us from what has come to be one of our own warm and light hearted terms for one another.

On the other hand, I can quite imagine their concern, given what's at stake in the upcoming election. We represent at least a third of all voters and no US president has ever been elected without our support.

any redneck who votes for a democrat is no longer a redneck; he instantly turns into a human with no heart or brain.

IMHO

That’s kind of a swiss army knife article for Brit leftists. You have the:

1. Americans as ignorant boobs cliche covered.
2. Excuse for why Obama will lose covered.
3. Brit fascination that the uncouth commoners actually determine who gets the power covered.

As it becomes clear that Obama is tanking, expect more articles like this one, especially from within rather than just from without.

My hunch is they know we take pride in getting called rednecks!

They want to ridicule us

God bless the rednecks, for it is they who feed cattle on cold snowy days when the rest of us will not leave the house, so that we might have food on the table.

It is they who saw the lumber and build the houses that we might have a warm place to sleep.

It is they who join the military and die that we may live.

In short, it is they who make the world go around.

They are the ones that make the ideas that we concoct in our air conditions offices work, sometimes modifying the original idea so it will work.

Thank God for the rednecks.

i’d rather ride with a redneck than be ridden by some red, socialist, self-appointed pseudo-intellectual scu&bag who believes that everyone around him/her is a stupid a&&.

IMHO

There are rednecks in Zaire, Germany, France, Britain, anywhere. And yes, ours are better than theirs, ‘cause the others are so stuck up.

Belief that no law is above God's law, not even the US Constitution.

Hyper patriotism. A fighting defence of native land, home and heart, even when it is not actually threatened: ie, Iraq, Panama, Grenada, Somalia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Vietnam, Haiti and dozens more with righteous operations titles such as Enduring Freedom, Restore Hope, and Just Cause.

...

And that has every thinking person here in the US, except perhaps John McCain and Sarah Palin, worried.

Hey Joe!

"Thinking people" here know that the Framers drafted our Constitution to conform to G-d's Law; and we also know the something about the abreviations i.e and e.g.. We know what they mean and when to use one and not the other.

Good luck with you BBC gig.

I thought it was rather humorous, but I question his redneck credentials. What self-respecting redneck would spell defense with a c, unless he’s talking about someone sitting on de fence? :-)

The author was born in Virginia;

I understood that while reading the article, but I still got the impression that he held some disdain for rednecks. Some of the qualities he listed were ones I thought to be admirable, but he couldn't hide his disapproval of them. I think the author has "outgrown" whatever redneck roots he might have had.

Don't mess with people that put cooking instructions on the animals in a zoo. And we rednecks don't want to rule the world.....

We're to busy hunting , drinking beer, and shooting our high powered rifles at pictures of osama bin laden.

I will not TEXT anything like obama bin bidin.

DOH !

My take was he was quite proud and tired of being insulted about being a ‘redneck’.

Here’s a rather revealing interview with the author.

A remarkably bitter and angry man.
