What has happened to my father's Democrats?

Posted on 09/09/2008 7:15:57 PM PDT by coolbreeze

My father was a Democrat. He worked through the depression(yes, there was work),he went to Harvard,(hauled radiators up and down the dorm stairs for three months,he was a pipe fitter and he hated those snot nosed rich bastids with a passion)he went to war in the South Pacific, came home and started a family.Normal guy...he died in 1984,and I still miss him ...my father would not recognize the modern Democratic Party, let alone vote for any of them. the Democratic Party today is built on the rotting foundation of the Vietnam War protest movement and the Gay Rights Movement, the "Wymyns" movement, and every other "movement" of the so called "oppressed".I do not think that Harry Truman or JFK could even poll 5% in a Democratic Primary today.I. like Zell Miller was "born" a Democrat, but I didn't leave the party, it left me.

The only movement the current Dem party looks like is a bowel movement.

When LBJ signed away the South with Great Society, he also signed on black voters. The party of Truman became more like the party of Malcolm X.

My dad too was a Democrat. His brothers were too.
Now all of their children are Republicans.
My mom a couple years ago finally changed her registration to Republican. She sent in the change and when she got it back
she was still registered Democrat. We had to go to the
Courthouse to straighten it out.
The Democrat Party has changed immensely. Now its become the party of potty politics.

I absolutely agree with the sentiment, "I like Zell Miller was 'born' a Democrat, but I didn't leave the party, it left me." I grew up in Maryland and when I first registered to vote, it was as a Democrat, like my parents and grandparents before me. But I was drawn to the Conservative side by the wonderful, inspirational Ronald Reagan.

I know many moral, hardworking, old fashioned Democrats. If we can use this chance we have been given to show them the light of truth our side represents as opposed to what a vile and despicable party the Democrats have become, we can really witness a political reformation with this election.

It was infiltrated and hijacked by Communists in the early 1970s.

I know how you feel. I grew up in a coal mining New Deal Democratic family in Virginia. My granddaddy worshipped FDR, and my dad still waxes sentimental about Truman, but not so much about JFK (he can't stand the Kennedys and their snobbery).

I was too was a registered Democrat, yet Conservative like Zell, until it finally dawned on me during the Clinton years that the Democrat Party had been completely subsumed by socialists and outright Communists. I quit the Democrat Party and joined the Republican Party, just in time for the 2000 primaries and election, and have never looked back. My dad is still a Democrat and has never been able to accept the fact that I moved on. Needless to say, we can never discuss politics without getting into a bitter argument. Sad.

I see what they mean. People who feel they are part of an oppressed minority group, or who feel a need to go on a crusade to fix society in some way, tend to be Democrats. On subjects such as gay rights, women’s abortion rights, Al Gore and global warming, the vast majority of people involved are Democrats. (Except for those who are too far left for even the Democrat party).

It’s easy to generalize, but Democrats tend to be people with some sort of grievance against the mainstream society. Democrats tend to be idealistic about whatever crusade they are on. Democrats tend to pursue their crusades with a religious zeal, while generally not being religious themselves, regarding traditional religion. Democrats tend to focus on abstract things like global warming, and warn us that the survival of the planet is at stake. Yet those same people don’t recognize the obvious threats to civilization as we know it from terrorism or evil dictators around the world.

It’s easy to generalize, but by contrast, the Republican party tends to be made up of people who are just living their lives, and their lives tend to be centered around settled family life. The Democrats on their crusades about this or that subject don’t have the time or the inclination to be involved with family life.

I agree with you for the most part, but I’d point out that the dem party may be growing, not shrinking. The moderates, the blue dogs and others may feel the party has changed, but seem to be ok with the new ownership (far left whacko’s).

You answered your own question.

...the Democratic Party today is built on the rotting foundation of the Vietnam War protest movement and the Gay Rights Movement, the "Wymyns" movement, and every other "movement" of the so called "oppressed".

Your father's Democrat party was buried in 1968. Today's Democrat party was born in 1972.

By the same token, your father's Republican party died in 1964. And today's Republican party was born in 1980.

It is called 1968.

One of my professors who I had a great deal of respect for was
a Humphrey Democrat and the advisor to the college Democrats.
I took a class from him in 1968 and we had some great discussions. I was active in college Republicans but considered him a mentor. We did not agree on much but he sure forced me to develop my thoughts more clearly. He nominated me to attend a semester in Washington D.C. which I will always be grateful (it was a good semester)
Oh and he was forced out as the advisor to the College Democrats by the McCarthites.

Those old-timers are gone. Many of their Children have “evolved” into new-age Democrats. Concern for the working man has morphed into “social justice” and civil rights has evolved into rights for every minority and class that can name itself.

On the other hand, i don’t know how Democrats traditional respect for America changed 180 degrees to now hold so many Anti-American members.
