Palin bounce has Democrats off balance
Los Angeles Times ^ | September 9, 2008 | Peter Wallsten and Janet Hook

Some fear Obama's more aggressive tone could enhance her appeal among white, blue-collar voters.

The emergence of Sarah Palin as a political force in the presidential race has left many top Democrats fretting that, just two weeks after their convention ended on an emotional high, Barack Obama's campaign has suddenly lost its stride.

Obama has responded aggressively this week to Palin's presence on the Republican ticket, using TV ads and campaign rallies to attack her contention that she is a political reformer who will take on the Washington establishment -- a role Obama has long claimed as his alone.

But some Democrats are now worried about the perils of Obama's strategy, saying that his campaign, instead of engaging the Alaska governor, should avoid any move that draws more attention to her and could enhance her appeal among the white, blue-collar voters who remain cool to Obama's candidacy.

A series of new polls suggests that Palin has given a major boost to John McCain's campaign, exciting the GOP base, winning over white women and all but erasing Obama's lead.

Concern among Democrats was high enough Tuesday that Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.)...felt it necessary to cite historical polling data at a lunch of Democratic senators to convince them that post-convention "bounces" ...have often faded in past elections.

To reassure nervous lawmakers, Durbin also reviewed Democratic registration gains this year in key battleground states.

Still, Democrats expressed anxiety about the new challenge suggested by recent surveys showing McCain has gained ground among independent voters and women, who could decide the race in states such as Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Since the Palin selection Obama has grown quite shrill in his attacks. He's shaking in his boots and proving he lacks a presidential demeanor.

Thanks for posting this article.

“a political reformer who will take on the Washington establishment — a role Obama has long claimed as his alone.”

Obama didn’t want to ‘confront’ the Washington Establishment, like Sarah does.

What Obama wants is for the Washington Establishment to kneel at his feet.

Obama seems to be running against Bush and Palin now.

I think he forgot about McCain! LOL

He is going to get his ass handed to him in the debates.

The battleground states are still close according to recent polls, so we need to keep hitting Obama hard with a message of cutting waste, drilling, and lowering taxes if it’s possible.

Lost its stride?! After two weeks??? It lost its stride and fell flat the day after Obama's speech. That was the day that Sarah Palin was announced as VP, she hadn't even said anything yet!

Oh, nice posters! “We can do it!” is a lot better than the vague and meaningless “Yes we can.” Or, even better, “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.” I never did figure that one out, but I’m just a bitter clinger.

Question.

Why are “white people” suddenly so important to a “colorblind/class-blind/open society/post-racial” Democratic party?

At the same time, they fear it could cloud Obama's carefully honed image as a post-partisan politician.

That ship has sailed. Obambi is the same old low-down dirty tricks cheating and lying politican that the Chicago machine has always turned out.

“He’s shaking in his boots and proving he lacks a presidential demeanor.”

He never had Presidential demeanor—just a speechmaker with a teleprompter.

Unscripted he looks like a guy that just got bested in a debate, because he just isn’t anywhere as smart as his carefully created image.

McCain and Palin, imperfect as are all humans, are the real deal. People see and sense that quality.

He should be shaking in his boots about how he will defend against Wright and Ayers and Rezco and birth certificates and his family connections, if the right-side 527s has to counter dirt with truth.

Well, if he wasn't always staring at her chest when she walks, it wouldn't be a problem.
