MARTINSBURG - A born-again Christian who is running for the U.S. Senate spoke to area Republican groups Thursday about key issues in his campaign, including abortion.
In his speech Thursday night, Jay Wolfe borrowed a phrase that former President John Adams used to describe slavery in order to describe his stance on abortion.
"Abortion is an evil of colossal magnitude and it needs to be corrected," Wolfe said.
The Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate is running in November's general election against current U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va. Wolfe spoke to members of the Berkeley County Republican Club and the Eastern Panhandle Republicans at Hoss's Steak House in Martinsburg.
Wolfe is a businessman from Clarksburg, and he said he grew up in a Democratic household and was originally a Democrat. But his party affiliation changed about 20 years ago, when he became a born-again Christian and realized the impact of the abortion issue. Wolfe said the issue was a key component to him becoming a Republican.
Wolfe said the No. 1 issue facing Americans is energy, adding that he supports offshore drilling and drilling in Alaska. He said drilling currently takes place in 44 of the 55 counties in West Virginia. Wolfe noted that drilling in those counties have resulted in large pockets of natural gas being discovered.
"And we have not upset the environment," he said, adding that drilling can take place in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge without disrupting the environment in that area as well.
During his speech, Wolfe shared his vision for his first day as a U.S. senator.
"I have a dream of walking onto the floor of the U.S. Senate with a message from West Virginia, and that message is 'drill now,'" he said.
Wolfe also supports abolishing the Internal Revenue Service as well as income, payroll, gift and "death" taxes in favor of the FairTax, which replaces all federal income and payroll-based taxes with measures that include a progressive national retail sales tax on all goods and services.
"This will allow people to take home their entire paycheck," Wolfe said.
Dr. Joseph DeSoto, president of the Berkeley County Republican Club and chairman of the Eastern Panhandle Republicans, said average citizens determine who their representatives are, and he thinks Wolfe will best represent the interests of West Virginia residents.
Several local politicians were on hand to hear Wolfe's speech, including Delegate John Overington, R-Berkeley; Delegate Craig Blair, R-Berkeley; and Carlton DeHaven, the Republican candidate for Berkeley County sheriff.
Wolfe asked them and everyone else in attendance for their assistance to get him elected to the U.S. Senate.
"You guys are the worker bees," Wolfe told the audience. "I need your help."
Here is the latest campaign ad from Jay Wolfe. He is running a grassroots campaign to oust Jay Rockefeller.
I received the following from Nathan Wolfe, Jay Wolfe's son. I challenge you to give no matter how small today.

I thought it pretty telling that Jay got almost 40 percent of the vote last time..that with virtually no budget, and driving his pickup town to town to meet and greet. Would love to see Rockefeller driven out of office...carpetbagger scum.
These are exactly the sort of races that Sarah Palin should focus on and help push over the top.
